In case you have not seen the coming attractions or the show itself TLC now has a show documenting the life of Muslims living in America. In one episode though it shows the fiance of a muslim woman converting from Catholicism to Islam. I was sick to my stomach seeing this, I do not know why TLC would show this. It was just so upsetting for me to see this. I am now personally boycotting TLC and advocating all my friends do the same. I am also going to send letters telling them how this was completely inappropriate. To show anyone changing their religion on regular television, I feel, is too sensitive of a subject to show, any religion. How do all of you feel about this show?

I haven’t seen the episode, but is it really that big of a deal to show someone moving from one faith to another? It happens all the time. Seems a bit of an overreaction to call for a boycott of an entire cable network because they happen to show someone converting to his future wife’s religion. Actually it doesn’t seem like a bit of an overreaction at all. It seems like quite a big overreaction.

Honestly, its not Moslems fault that they are drawing believers. If you should be mad at anyone be mad at the Catholic Church for failing to teach going on three generations about their faith.

TLC would make a documentary about a dog on a leash (And I am positive they’ve tried)

But that one is sickening. I’m not from, and do not live in the USA, but I didn’t know there WERE that many Moslems there!

This is a subject that hits very close to home for me. My brother converted to Islam (from Catholicism) in order to marry his Muslim wife. He didn’t tell us this for quite a while. In fact, he never told me at all, his wife accidentally let it slip and made me promise not to tell him I knew.
It just broke my heart. 😦

lrcatholic95,

You are of course free to do as you wish, but frankly I would as you this. Would you feel this same way, upset and ready to boycott TLC if they had shown a program about Catholics living in America and showed a Muslim converting to Catholicism?

I’m sure you would not.

I don’t watch a lot of TLC anymore because of the low quality of their programming but I would not see this as a legitimate reason to boycott the network.

Peace
James

Apostasy is a disturbing thing, but it happens and it is to the credit of Christianity that we don’t have a lot of Christians clamoring for any such person to be executed. Unlike some religions.

I don’t really see boycotting a television show or channel just because they depicted it. I’ve never watched TLC (I think) much less this documentary so I may be missing something, but if it’s happening in the real world then in principle there could be legitimate reasons for a television program to give some attention to it if they are doing a profile of American Muslims.

I don’t think there are as many, in proportion to the total population, as in most Western European countries, but there are some of virtually every kind of person on the planet in this country. Most of the Muslims I’ve known have been college students from oversees or immigrants or their children, with family connections to science and technology fields. One of my childhood friends was a Muslim whose father worked at a nuclear power plant in Pakistan and paid for his wife and children to be able to live in America.

What is wrong with that!, some Muslims secretly change their religion also but because they will face death execution if discovered they do not do much testimonies on TVs.

Good Morning! My name is Chris, I am not a "C"atholic but a "c"athollic. I am a very conservative LCMS Lutheran. I have been looking for a forum to discuss this show. Just the trailer itself seem to show a group of muslims that were joking about being “American” muslims. And then the woman who was very arrogant about being on a plane just got to me.

I was very saddened when the young Catholic man left christianity to become a muslim. My first thought was, does this man think that Islam is just another way to God and all religions are equal or is he just plain nieve to what Islam and the Koran teaches. Does he not know that the false god of Islam is a god of hate and lies? The God of the Bible is a God of love, forgiveness and self sacrafice. Is killing Jews, Christians and non-believers OK? Is this man just plain DUMB? Most likely those muslims on this show are just plain DUMB to believe that Islam is a religion of peace. Islam is a religion of hate and all you have to do is open up a Koran and read it for youself.

There are devout Christians and cafateria Christians (Christians that pick and choose what they want to believe). There are also devout muslims that take every word in the Koran as truth and follow through with what it teaches(the ones that believe in jihad and carry it out), and then you have your cafeteria muslims that believe that Islam is a religion of peace and that pick and choose what they want to believe, and disregard the verses in the Koran that teach hate and jihad. in the name of allah.

I do not beleive that you can be a good American and a “good” muslim at the same time. Where are the peaceful muslims to speak out against jihad and 9/11. They don’t and they CAN"T or they are subject to be killed.

I ama truley scared as to where our country is headed if Obama has another 4 years. This man is truely against America, against Israel and against the freedoms that we have living in this free nation. If he is re-elected America will slowly be changed for the worse.

I saw the last part of the episode where the Catholic converted to Islam. I also felt, not necessarily saddened, more questioning why he would convert to a non-Christian religion. The preview for the next episode makes it seem he only converted so he could marry the girl, which also makes me feel almost as if he was forced into converting. As they explained, the father must give approval before the girl can even accept dating the man.
I also felt, somewhat bothered by the way it seemed they just took his conversion so lightly even making jokes.

At the university I attended, we had a good size group of Malaysian Muslim students. No one gave them a hard time at all but this was before 9/11. They were good students, and some of them brought their young families with them while they attended school. I did get a chance to have a meal with a few of the female students at an apartment they had off campus. They lived simply with not much furniture etc. When we had dinner, we sat on the floor, and they helped me fill my plate as I normally sit at a table with a chair to eat. They were very kind and welcoming, and respected the fact about my way of life & religion as I treated them nicely in return.

There are good and bad people of all faiths and all walks of life in every nation. I presume that most people try to live a good life, and treat their neighbors & those they don’t know with respect, plus not harm them. I’ve been to Belfast Ireland, and some areas of the city still will not welcome Catholics to live in them and vice versa regarding Protestants (or even those who are not Christians). I just don’t openly say I am Catholic when going down the Shankill Road as an example (Protestant area) as you never know who may take offense.

How is it TLC’s fault for accurately portraying another person’s exercise of free will? While I am saddened that this man left the Church, I am grateful to live in a country where conversions to another faith are not punishable by death.

And people say romantic love doesn’t lead people away from God. This proves them wrong. It is not Islam that’s the problem, but that the guy’s lust led him away from the Church.

Will thats a rather hasty conclusion. Just because a man leaves the Church for a woman does not necessarily mean that Lust is to blame.

There could be numerous reasons as to why the man left:
  1. He was baptized but not raised in the Church (no confirmation/communion) thus no real strong ties to the Faith.
  2. Encounters with the Church/clergy/Catholics which turned him off to the what he perceived to be norms of the Church.
  3. Love, which is not lust since love is and can only be of God. Perhaps the Almighty has brought these 2 people together for a reason, note converting back to Catholicism down the road is not impossible for these.
  4. Also: The man could easily realize his lustful desires by logging onto Craigslist, Jumping throw the hoops that come with marriage shows something deeper, methinks.

Would it be innappropriate for TLC to show a Muslim converting to Catholicism?

I don’t think either is INappropriate, but I believe there would be a very large public outcry if TLC showed a Muslim converting to a different faith.

Its a crime that can carry the death penalty in many Muslim countries.

I think romance (“romantic love” is a contradiction in terms) leads people to put each other on a pedestal that should be reserved for God and God alone. It is idolatry. I know this because Jesus said, “By their fruits you shall know them.” It is because of the gospel of romance that people are clamoring for the Church to accept homosexuality, divorce, and a whole bunch of other things. Jesus also said, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your mind, and all your soul.” Romance leads people to “love” each other in the same way. They think they love each other, but love is eternal, and the problem with falling in love is that it’s just as easy to fall out of love. Therefore romantic love is a lie, and all lies come from Satan, who is the father of lies.

And if a non-Catholic became Catholic just to marry a Catholic, I would question his/her sincerity. Anything built on changeable feelings is built on sand.

Whatever is not of faith is sin.
