To the women here--have you ever done something drastic w/your hair?

Several years ago I had 9 inches chopped off. Shortly after that I had bright red highlights added (my hair is a dark coffee brown).

I saw a recent photo of Katie Holmes at an event and LOVED her haircut.

I’m considering it. It might work. I remember watching her on “Dawson’s Creek” and thinking that her hair looked just like mine: same color, same slight waviness/frizziness. Only problem is the heavy bang. I haven’t had bangs since I was in high school. Not sure if I want to deal with them again. It also looks like I’d have to fuss with straightening it. But it’s really cute.
wwwoooah, wait a second. Stop the presses ! Did you say NINE INCHES OFF JEN??? That’s a lot, girl!

Hehe I used to be able to sit on my hair. Now it’s about shoulder length. I gradually started taking it up when I got to college (at first I only took off about 7 inches, then it just got shorter). Before my junior year my hair was around mid-back length and I took it up to my shoulders. Everybody was shocked! I’d actually like it a little shorter, but not quite as short as the ones in your first post. I like the last picture posted though. It would seem more appropriate for your age (the only people I see with the first haircut are in the 15-25 range).

That’s my hair too, except mine’s dyed black. I part my bangs off center and let them frame my face rather then having them almost bettie page like that.

I think you are right, but I work with a woman who is around my age, who has that look, and it is great on her. (I don’t care for the ultra shortness in the back the more I stare at that photo) Posh, in that photo–isn’t she in her late 30’s? I like the classic look of Katie’s new do, but modifying it to be a bit longer. I think I’m gonna try that one. Thank you for your thoughts, everyone. I knew you would be helpful.🙂

It was really long. I got it cut a la Gillian Anderson in X-files seasons 6/7. I wanted to dye it red, too, but settled for the red highlights as I don’t have a redhead complexion. 😦

I have had quite a few styles, myself. I have been ultra short, to mimic Meg Ryan’s look in some of her movies where she has a pixie cut. I have had it long and one length like Marsha Brady as a teen. So, the Katie Holmes look is quite doable, although my dd looked at it a moment ago, and start babbling that she didn’t like it. My husband liked the Katie do, just a little longer. Good post Mz Jen!!😉

I had waist-length hair for absolutely yonks and cut it to collar length. (At least nine inches off!)

I was so fed up with the amount of time to get it dry (it’s quite porous and the only time I ever got to wash it was in the evenings) and I was forever dragging it out from under guitar/fiddle backpack cases and trying to pull it up outta the back of coats and it was long enough that that could be hard work. A plait or ponytail doesn’t suit me (I can’t have it sit flat round the forehead, it’s got to be a bit “puffed up”) and putting it up was more time than I was willing to invest every morning. I’m really fussy about putting hair up - I can’t do with the current fashion of twisting it and jamming it in a butterfly clip and having ends poke out everywhere, it just ain’t me. (Fine if others do it, but I could not leave the house that way and on me it would look awful.) It’s a proper old-fashioned bun or plaits-across-the-top - anything else on me looks stupid. Also, the thought of being in strong wind or doing something active at work and having it come unstuck and needing re-doing gives me the heebies - I was poked out the door as a child looking a complete fool often enough and having my hairdo come to bits in public is not on.

So I had a fit one day and cut it all off. Actually I made my husband cut it all off - it’s always been and still is all the one length, so he can manage the trimming. I miss it but not enough to grow it back. Husband much preferred the long hair but it wasn’t him having to wear it and maintain it. (Also my stress levels are through the roof sometimes and I really - seriously - have to keep down the number of exasperations in life, even little ones.) He also doesn’t realise I have aged and the one workable everyday hairstyle I had no longer looks good. That’s not to say I think long hair ages women - I definitely do not - it’s just that hairstyle no longer worked.

The funniest thing was, when I cut it I was mobbed and complimented en masse by older women who had obviously been itching for years to take me aside and point out that Long Hair Ages Any Woman Over Thirty, Didn’t Your Mother Ever Tell You? I’m not unfriendly but it’s easy to work out that I probably wouldn’t care for unsolicited opinions on my personal appearance. But the haircut opened the flood gates.

(I’ve sometimes been tempted to grow it all back just to nark that woman who said, “don’t ever grow it back, my dear.”)

Well, mine was about 2 inches past shoulder length, so dark it photographed black. Only in the bright sunlight could you see that it was actually brown with red tints.

I, too, had the bowl cut, above my ears, and loved it!
It was this way some 11+ yrs ago, when DH and I started dating.
Over the years it’s been below my bra strap, and chin length.

Now, I’ve got a razored bob, jaw length, with blond and red streaks all around. Very, very, different! Only problem is, the red didn’t really ‘take’ so next time, it’s to go with a bolder shade.
Frankly, I prefer my hair short, as when it’s long, I just ponytail it or pin it back. No style at all. With this cut, and the texture of my hair, I’ve got a side part that has to be ‘tamed’, and waves that are also ‘subdued’. But it’s kinda nice, makes me feel more girly, I can say that!

By the way, I love that cut! If my hair would hang that way (silky) I’d consider it…but alas, wavy hair says nope, not gonna happen…sigh.

Besides the almost-shave, I had the extreme opposite back in the 80’s. I had long hair that was spiral permed. It was very big! 😛

Good point. I have been told I don’t look 39 (whatever that looks like), people at work were surprised I have a 15 year old. (actually they look at me with pity on their face, because I really think some of them think I had a child in high school, haha) But, I think I look around 33/34, some say I could pass for 30, but I don’t think so, and just feel that this long hair makes me look…what’s the word…like it’s too much for my small face. I haven’t had it cut in over two months, so that could be the problem, but I’m tired of the same old same old. I identify with only washing it at night, otherwise I would need to wake up at 5am just to wash it and blow dry. It is think, and porous, as you say.

Time for a change, ladies! 👍

Came back to clarify.
When I said I now have red and blond streaks, I meant along with the dark brown. So now, at 35, I have tri colored hair!

My mom says I’m having either an early mid life crisis, or trying to relive my teenagerhood (though it was a really tame time, let me tell you). Either way, it’s just hair, it’ll grow back, so have fun!

You would fit in in Southern California.

I had waist-length hair in high school, and had it chopped off to a pixie cut in college - my boyfriend at the time didn’t even comment! I was kind of miffed at that.

I’ve had my hair short for a long time now, and I love it short - I love the feel of it, the ease of styling (no worries about updo versus leaving it down), and how I feel when I have short hair. But I kept getting comments - my mom even asked me whether I was gay! Now I’m growing it out.

I love dying my hair - last summer, my boss told me he didn’t care if I went punk with my hair, so I was chin-length with orange, pink, purple, blue, and green highlights. 👍 (At different times - orange for one month, then pink… all the way to the end of the summer.) I wish I could do it again, but my new boss doesn’t approve.

My boyfriend told me he likes my hair long and natural, so I’m running with that for a while. I also don’t have the money anymore for a regular trim like I used to. It’s shoulder-length now, and I’ll probably grow it out slowly for at least another year. Maybe after I get married I’ll chop it all off again, but I know my boyfriend would be upset if I did that! Women always seem to do one thing before marriage and then change drastically afterward.

As for you, whatevergirl, the brown bob looks really nice. I love the style you posted at the beginning, too - really pretty. As long as your husband doesn’t hate the style, I say go for it. But if PenguinsFan says he doesn’t like short hair at all, I might reconsider just because it seems inconsiderate to completely disregard a husband’s feelings.

He looked through this thread over my shoulder a moment ago, and said…oh boy, I’m gonna have fun tomorrow. hahaha Meaning, that he remembers the times when I just ‘chopped it off’ without consulting him. (and he is planning on sharing that with you all)😊 He was disappointed on a few occasions, but in his words, it grows back. I also have been disappointed when I have asked for one thing, and the person chopped it off. Ugh. Surprisingly, he really likes the Katie Holmes do, a longer version would be lovely, I think.

Thank you for your reply. Funny, that you had all those colors, wild girl!!!😉 😃

Aw–I like red and blond streaks. I’m getting an image of you in my mind already!🙂

I personally liked Katie’s hair better before the cut. But that’s just me.

I have long hair (past my shoulders) and have had it this same way for YEARS! I have thought about cutting it at times. Actually, back in college I did cut it all off (to right below my ears) but I like it better long on me. DH likes long hair too. What is it w/ most (not all, but most) men liking long hair on women???

My husband said he liked it because it was versatile - plaits, ponytails, loose, a bun, etc.

Trouble is that because of my odd head shape (kind-of elongated front-to-back, rather like a big bump on the back of the head) not all these things worked for me. Some just looked awful. And some of the “up” styles were difficult because although thick at the roots, it used to break off so it got thinner towards the end - it wasn’t uniformly thick and some hairdos just weren’t “structurally sound”.

I cut my shoulder length hair into that skater cut that was popular in '02-'03. Then I had it cut into a 35/10 and dyed it crayola red with white highlights. It was pretty rocking with the '40s makeup.

This is what my hair looks like now:
(Please Note: This uploaded content is no longer available.)

But I was thinking about your hair style quandary and wanting it shorter. Would something like this work? It is still short, but not uber short.

That’s adorable, and so is the linked photo. I love Mandy Moore. She always looks so cute.

I change my hair all the time, the most drastic was when I went from mid-back level, with spiral perm to chin level, layered flip-- and color varies from dirty blond to reddish blond to blond.

I don’t like to keep my hair the same. I just went back to a more layered bob from a side-part, all one length look.

So, go for whatever makes you happy. The great thing about hair is… it grows back.

That said, I really don’t like Posh Spice’s hair… 🙂 Unless you live in NYC or LA you might not “blend” in the office, KWIM?

I think Katie Holmes has a more sophisticated version of that haircut, and that’s what I would go for.
