To the women here--have you ever done something drastic w/your hair?

I cut my shoulder length hair into that skater cut that was popular in '02-'03. Then I had it cut into a 35/10 and dyed it crayola red with white highlights. It was pretty rocking with the '40s makeup.

This is what my hair looks like now:

But I was thinking about your hair style quandary and wanting it shorter. Would something like this work? It is still short, but not uber short.
I had this look last year, and it is also very feminine, yet business like. Thank you for your post!

I change my hair all the time, the most drastic was when I went from mid-back level, with spiral perm to chin level, layered flip-- and color varies from dirty blond to reddish blond to blond.

I don’t like to keep my hair the same. I just went back to a more layered bob from a side-part, all one length look.

So, go for whatever makes you happy. The great thing about hair is… it grows back.

That said, I really don’t like Posh Spice’s hair… 🙂 Unless you live in NYC or LA you might not “blend” in the office, KWIM?

I think Katie Holmes has a more sophisticated version of that haircut, and that’s what I would go for.
There’s a mixture of styles here in Florida, but Orlando and Boca I would say seems to be cosmopolitan (More New York-ish) than Tampa Bay. Many of the women in my office have longer hair, and actually, told me they like my hair the way it is. Not sure why I want a change. I get bored with the same old same old, you know?🤷

Here’s what my current hairdo looks like:

(I had a different image a minute ago, but this is more along the lines of if I don’t use the straightener, which is often, because I am lazy with it, plus it dries your hair if you use it too much)

I’m not blond, but just to give you an idea of the cut. My hair is about 2 inches shorter than this cut. I do like the look, but it takes a lot to get it straight (I’m sure it takes Reese Witherspoon some time too!!) It looks best pin straight. (with the straightening iron I do it)
Just thought I would point out that some people have to work hard to get their hair to curl like Reese’s does here - it would take my hair in the smallest rollers put in wet with a "curling agent’ in it to even get a bit of the curl in this picture!

When the “afro” look was in, in the eighties, I would get a perm and it would take the smallest roller with the longest possible time with the perm solution to get it (at least it worked though!)

Sharon, do what makes you happy, sweetheart. I personally luv your long hair, Like I said last nite, tho that Katie Holmes h/cut looks nice, also. You could be bald, and u would still look gorgeous. :+)

Once I cut my hair from mid-back length to a pixie style cut, somewhat like the one you pictured. Once, I wanted to have “red” hair (instead of blonde) so i got a cellophane. It turned out the color of bbq potato chips!

I say get the cut! It is so liberating to be rid of all that old hair - feels so clean and fresh when you do it. FYI - in my experience, guys ALWAYS prefer long to short hair (my DH does) so I say his opinion basically cancels itself out!

Good Luck!

bbq chips? hee hee:D I am going to think about a few hairstyles, leaning towards the Katie hairdo above. (a little longer though) Again, Jen–thank you so much for posting that!!! And go from there! Thanks everyone for your replies! Hair matters to us. 😃

Penguinsfan–you’re a sweetie–thanks for saying that, babe. (((big hug)))

Long Hair Ages Any Woman Over Thirty, Didn’t Your Mother Ever Tell You?
Never heard this! I always thought girls tended to cut their hair short when they wanted to look a little *older *. Mine is down to my waistband (although I usually keep it in a braid which doesn’t hang nearly that low) and people are routinely quite shocked when they find out I have an 18 year old and/ or 9 children.

My hair was down to my elbows and light brown. I cut it to chin length and dyed it a dark red. That was the most drastic thing I’ve ever done with my hair. I look better with long hair, though. Now my hair is almost back to my elbows again, and its natural color. My boyfriend says he likes it long, and I’d like to let it grow out more and see how long it gets. 😉 I’ll eventually cut it, but not as short as it was.

whatevergirl, both the pictures you posted are really neat haircuts. If you look good with short hair and your husband doesn’t mind, I’d say go for it! If you have younger kids they might not like it at first, though. (My mom cut her hair once and one small child burst into tears when she saw it…She was okay in a little while though.)

It’s one of those old things like Blue And Green Should Never Be Seen, and Ladies And Slacks Should Ne’er Touch Their Backs and all those other live-life-by-a-lookup-table-of-rules-instead-of-turn-your-brain-on things.

My mother’s family was full of stuff like this. They’d see a blue-eyed blonde, for example, and they’d all swoon about how wonderful she looked even if she had a face like the south end of a north-bound camel. That didn’t matter, she was A Blue-Eyed Blonde and that was A Good Thing To Be, therefore she was gorgeous, end of story. (Oh, and redheads were always to wear green, no matter how garish the result, that was another of their fixations.)

What anything actually looked like in the end was irrelevant - if you had observed the rules correctly you got the tick of approval. Harrumph.

WhateverGirl,

I love Beckham’s hairstyle. If you have cheekbones, MAKE THAT APPOINTMENT!!!

My husband was leary about a drastic cut i did, but i’m still sporting a version of it and he loves it.

Hi Sharon,
I say Go for the short hair. If you have to fool so much with your hair now, then it’s time for a change.
Good luck!
Kathy

My only thought is–personally, I’m lazy. I hate spending an hour fixing my hair. I have the long layered cut, like what you have now, and I love it, because I don’t have to do anything to it! I just wash and go. I don’t straighten it, just let my waves go and with the layers it looks great. I would HATE having a short cut I had to straighten every day. Why waste the time? And you have to get it cut more often to maintain it too, so there’s more time and expense. So that’s my lazy woman reason for having long hair. 😉 😛

:rotfl:

This is hilarious. It reminds me of a passage from “To Kill a Mockingbird” (I’m in my annual reading of it right now), where Scout is explaining how the old-timers are so used to each others’ ways that they can generalize by family lineage, i.e. “Every Third Merriwether Is Morbid, The Truth Is Not In The Delafields, The Bufords Always Walk Like That”. Cracks me up every single time.

This thread is fun. I am getting a haircut TOMORROW and I am pumped. The last time it was cut was in August. Right now it’s pretty long and most of the layers have grown out. I have extremely thick hair, it got thicker while I was preg, never really fell out, and now that I am still taking prenatals its out of control. I get it thinned when I get it cut, and I can’t wait to start saving $$ by using less shampoo 😃

I am saying right now I am getting something “way different” and “drastic” but usually that just means I cut off about 3 or 4 inches, get it thinned and re-layered, and it looks like it did the last time I got a haircut:shrug: I am scared to go too short because my hair’s thickness and poofy-ness (for lack of a better word) could result in a 'fro…and I’m not down with that 🙂

Wow! This thread could not have come at a more perfect time! I was just emailing a friend about what to do with my hair. It has been about a year since I last had it cut as I hate paying someone to cut my hair. My husband gets his hair faded and it takes them like 30-45 minutes and he pays $10 so I cannot justify getting mine cut, when I only get a trim for $20 and it takes 5 minutes! I don’t do anything to my hair ever. Just straight and long and wont’ take a curl. But people always seem to compliment me on how pretty and healthy my hair is…although I don’t see it that way. I think it is long and stringy but then I’ve had it all my life. It is very healthy though so I never get it colored or highlighted or anything. But lately I have wanted to change it up and do something crazy different…possibly short. This thread is giving me some ideas and now I’m excited! Thanks guys, hope this keeps going so I can get some more ideas and see more pics!

Absolutely! I’ve got the same thing and love the low maintenance 🙂

I totally agree!! I’m at that point where I need to do “something” but can’t decide. I have very straight long hair down to about the middle of my back. Dark dark auburn, no bangs, but some layers. I’ve been thinking about going back to chin length, but after seeing the Reese Witherspoon photo of the long straight hair with bangs, I think that will be a great interim cut for me!! 👍

Coolness!! I’m all excited now!!

I know everyone–I’m getting excited to change something with my hair! I think I’ll do the Katie Holmes look–a longer version, mainly because I’m tired of layers. Thanks for chiming in everyone!! Good luck with your new do’s!😃

This was me. I didn’t get anything done to it while I was pregnant and for quite a while after. 😊 Anyway, I got it cut last month, and it looks like this:

It is SO easy to take care of at this length, all the layers stay put if I put it up, and it looks great without any work while it’s down. Now if only the rest of me besides my hair looked like Halle Berry!
