I think that it is best to focus on the word being used in context.
The Greek word for Paradise appears three times in the New Testament.
Luk 23:43 And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, Today shalt thou be with me in paradise.
2Cor 12:4 How that he was caught up into paradise, and heard unspeakable words, which it is not lawful for a man to utter.
Rev 2:7 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the tree of life, which is in the midst of the paradise of God.
The same Greek word is used in each case. One SHOULD be able to come to the conclusion, UNLESS the context indicates otherwise, that all three are referring to the same place.
Peace to you,
Richard
Many points?Okokok so let me get this straight.
First of all, about words and meanings:
Paradise can mean (generally, not only in the Bible)
Abraham’s bosom can mean
- where Adam and Eve were.
- Where the righteous dead ones went before Jesus’s time, a place of human happiness and
- Heaven
Heaven can mean
- the same as paradise 2)
- the same as paradise 3) (only in later liturgical etc. usage)
1)the beatific vision we experience after death if we are saved
2) the new Jerusalem, a spiritual but real place where we’ll be when our bodies are resuscitated on the last day.
Hell can mean
Gehenna means the same as Hell 1)
- the place of eternal torment for the wicked
- the place where the righteous dead ones went before Christ (see apostolic creed)
Hades means the same as paradise 2) and Hell 2) , and so does Sheol.
Purgatory is where the dead righteous ones go who are not complete in sanctifying grace so basically the same as Hades.
So basically it gets pretty confusing because if we don’t take into account these different meanings we can conclude that Hell equals purgatory equals heaven, since
Gehenna=Hell=Hades=Purgatory=Abraham’s bosom=Paradise=Heaven
However we know that it is not so, so we have to be careful with the meanings.
Many points are still unclear to me. I will write more soon.
Because they are places - our bodies will be resuscitated and where there are bodies, there is a place, not necessarily material places but spiritual ones, just as we’ll have a spiritual body. Heaven is described as a place in Revelation. If Paradise/Abraham’s bosom was a place located at the center of the Earth as some here suggest and if that Paradise equals purgatory then purgatory also is a place. Why do you think of them as places? We have no inkling if the temporal laws of space and time apply.
The doctrine is simple, if we don’t stumble around and make it complicated. One of three things can happen to you when you die:
- You may be saved without conditions.
- You may be in a state of purgation for the effects of sins.
- You may be condemned.
You say that Purgstory exists.Because they are places - our bodies will be resuscitated and where there are bodies, there is a place, not necessarily material places but spiritual ones, just as we’ll have a spiritual body. Heaven is described as a place in Revelation. If Paradise/Abraham’s bosom was a place located at the center of the Earth as some here suggest and if that Paradise equals purgatory then purgatory also is a place.
But we know that there is no purgatory at the center of the Earth so this theory must be false. This discussion is not about what will happen to us after death but about the places one could go to before Christ. So Abraham’s bosom existed then but it obviously doesn’t any more, or does it? but Purgatory does, so was Abraham’s bosom kind of substituted for purgatory or something?

Paradise is the Heaven of the Sacred Humanity of Our Lord, or the Second Heaven, the Third Heaven is the Heaven of the Divinity. The First Paradise was lost at the fall of Adam, and will be restored on earth in fulfilment of the Prophesy of the Our Father. When Jesus says this, why does he say paradise? Paradise and heaven are different, paradise is past and gone, heaven future and coming…
AND
what is Jesus talking about here, because he DID NOT go to paradise/heaven on that day, the Church explicitly teaches that he spent 3 days in the netherworld, then 40 days on Earth and then ascended to heaven, so Jesus could’ve been there with this guy in 43 days, not on that day.
Ever thought of that one?

When Jesus was speaking from the cross, He was NOT yet IN eternity.Paradise is the Heaven of the Sacred Humanity of Our Lord, or the Second Heaven, the Third Heaven is the Heaven of the Divinity. The First Paradise was lost at the fall of Adam, and will be restored on earth in fulfilment of the Prophesy of the Our Father.
About your second question, remember that Jesus on the Cross spoke as God, in His Eternity. One could say the same thing about leaving Mary as mother of John, when the real meaning of Mary´s maternity was universal.
You say that Purgstory exists.
Let me ask you these -
Did Jesus Christ die for SOME of your sins ?
Did Jesus Christ die for MOST of your sins ?
Did Jesus Christ die for ALL of your sins ?
Purgatory, is defined as a place where you go - after death - to be purified of remaining sin, correct ?
Well then, refer back to the questions.
Did not James say, if you’ve broken one commandment, you’re guilty of them ALL ? I believe he did.
Did not Paul say, Sin is sin ? I believe he did. (Quote ended here)
Jesus died to pay the price of our sins but not for our temporal punishment. For example: My friend steals money from her employer and is caught. The story hits the papers. She has to appear in court and THAT hits the papers. She is scorned by her former co-workers. Her husband divorces her. Her children are embarassed to have her as a mother and some are no longer speaking to her. She is found guilty and has to serve time in prison. She gets out and has a hard time finding work as now she is a former felon. Now let’s say that I also steal money from my employer. He never finds out. I use the money to buy a vacation cabin and new boat and motor and stock in a huge corporation from which I make even more money. I go to the grave with this secret of what I have done. I never paid the temporal punishment.
True, sorry, I meant glorious bodies (or resurrected) not spiritual bodies, which we’ll have when we’re in heaven but not yet in the heavenly Jerusalem, I believe. You say that Purgstory exists.

As far as ‘our bodies’ - at the resurrection, we won’t be in ‘Spiritual’ bodies’. We will be likened unto Jesus’ resurrected body. He said to Thomas, ‘Touch me, does a spirit have flesh and bone ?’
Before Adam sinned, he said, ‘Bone of my bone. Flesh of my flesh.’ He walked with God in a BODY. (Before he ‘knew’ he was naked.
Jesus ‘hungered’ and wanted something to eat AFTER His resurrection. Can a spirit EAT food ?

QUOTE]
Eerrm…new paradise on earth? That’s JW theology - paradise will be restored in the New Heavenly Jerusalem, not on earth. Someone else here quoted 2.Cor.12 to show that Paradise is THIRD heaven not second…before this I didn’t know there were several heavens, why don’t we hear about this anywhere? Could start another thread on this issue…
By that of the tradition of the Church - indeed soWhen Jesus was speaking from the cross, He was NOT yet IN eternity.
The ‘real’ meaning of Mary’s maternity ?
By who’s interpretation ?
Universal ? Hardly !!
We have to remember that Jesus is the Word Incarnate, and the Word speaks in Eternity. When Jesus was speaking from the cross, He was NOT yet IN eternity.
The ‘real’ meaning of Mary’s maternity ?
By who’s interpretation ?
Universal ? Hardly !!
THANK GOODNESS I finally found peace with this information from the Catholic encyclopedia: Purgatory IS NOT the same as the bosom of Abraham:This place of temporary punishments is referred to as the bosom of Abraham, the prison, sheol, purgatory. Christ accepted the thief’s surrender to Him, so they would both that day be in sheol, but for two different reasons. Christ to preach and then lead out, the thief to pay satisfaction.

The original Greek did not have punctuation. Punctuation really did not come into use until 1000 years after Christ. Originally, there were not even spaces between words.I believe that explanation you’ve heard from Jehova’s Witnesses or something - in their translation it’s like that. But in my Greek new Testament there are commas and as far as I know Greek uses punctuation and the Evangelists probably punctuated the text, or does someone know for a fact that the commas have been added later? Anyway in my Greek New Testament the comma is before the word “today”, not after. the JWs place it after so that they could still hold their doctrines that the dead are unconscious and that the final destination of most believers is an earthly paradise.
