Due to popular demand I am starting this thread for all the Tolkien freaks…Including myself;) You are welcome to post anything about Tolkien and his works, or journey into such topics as Tolkien vs. other fantasy authors. I hope that we will get many people…Happy Posting!! and God Bless You!
 
We may be nearing the end of the NewlLine Cinema and MGM scwabble over film rights, seeing the beginning of a full lengfilm directed by…who else…Peter Jackson and the Crew form WETA.

In a recent interview Peter Jackson says he’s never even been approached by a studio (either New Line or MGM) about making The Hobbit. He’s got a lot of other films on his agenda right now. He didn’t even seem all that excited about the possibility of directing it…

Best not to in my opinion. I loved the LOTR movies, honestly I do, but it seems to me that when a book becomes a movie it loses that element of imagination and mystery that should always accompany a good novel.

The LOTR movies were great, but lets leave the rest of Tolien’s works to our imaginations.

Well…I think you will find that the majority of the Tolkien and Middle Earrth fans will want to see The Hobbit made into a motion picture, because it was the precursor, I think people secretly want to se good old smaug in all his nasty glory. I myself would like to see Beorn, and the trolls that gave Bilbo, and Thorin and company such a rotten time. But i think most of all I would absolutely love to see them recreate Mirkwoord Forest (formerly Greenwood The Great).

I do agree however that the books will never diminish out of our minds. I think also that they will always stay with us, and that there initial impact will remain (in repsects, to our reading them), even in light of fantastic special effects, and impressive scenery. I think we can both I agree, (or more like, me agreeing with you, i think you eluded to this)😉 That our minds are the greatest film reel of them all, and no movie will ever compare to the great scenes we have played out in our heads and kept for memory.!!!

I think the Silmarillion would be great…however I do think that it would be a bit much for the average joe, it would be way to confusing to put to film probably…the market for it would really only satisfy the hardcore Tolkien addicts, (i mean fans;) ) It would however be quite impressive, quite so!. I would love to see it…again i think it would be a bit much for the average Tolkienite.

The Sil is not a novel in the common usage of the term. There are no set main characters or settings or the like. The Sil is more like a compiled history than a novel. So not much chance of a movie there.
 
I am rereading the book (again), and I have to say that Peter Jackson (unfourtunatly) had no chance of creating Lothlorien. The book describes something we could never create. I love the books. I thought you all needed to know that… 👍

After reading Silmarillion and Book of Lost tales. I found they actually dwarfed the LoTR saga…anyone else have the same feeling? They are all of course fantastic books!!!
 
Here is an interesting tidbit. I was talking to a priest today and he said he did not like some things about Tolkien. Specifically he takes issue with the fact that Tolkien’s world was not made intrinsically good and ordered, but rather sprung from an incident of disorder. He said that this is problematic because the inherent goodness of creation is a unique feature of the judeo-christian tradition or at least the ancient eurasian religions.

Interesting…Apprently he has not read The Silmarillion, it follows the same kind of structure as the Judeo-Christian understanding of the downfall of the angels, and their relationship to God. While the Priest has his right to like or dislike some things about Tolkien, I don’t think he has really come to understand what the basis for Tolkiens works were

While Tolkien himself said that he did not write allegory, he certainly didn’t not prove this point when contructedhe world of Middle Earth and it’s legends. They clearly follow a consistent symbology of the the Christian faith.

I would have loved a much larger version, but it took him 16 years to write what he did. I am glad that he wrote the series… 👍
 
Who says Jackson’s, ahem, attempt at Tolkien is the definitive one? Nothing with Liv Tyler in it can be the definitive anything, in my opinion, and the rest of the elves were no better. They shouldn’t have had humans play the elves; they should have hired Square ENIX (the makers of the Final Fantasy games) to computer-generate some super-humanly beautiful people. Like Kadaji.😉 Watch the credits of Advent Children if you don’t think it would’ve looked good. The only CGI thing in the scene is Cloud’s bike, the road is real. But you can’t tell!

I still say, however, that LOTR requires an in-depth treatment, which is why God invented animation. Twenty-six half hour episodes for each book, and you can finally include Bombadil, and keep Glorfindel as the elf they meet at the Ford. Every single film version cuts out the Old Forest and those ancient Hill People, and dang it, I want my Barrow-Wights!

In The Silmarillion, Melkor begins to sing his disharmony before the world comes into being.

However, I’m not sure this is inconsistent with the Christian view. The music did introduce disorder from the very start. However, the world did not “spring” from the music. The world sprung from God. The music coincided with a vision of the world that was to be.
 
The Silmarillion would be nice to see on the big screen. The battles are just so big… Armies of Balrogs… Reinforcements coming fom the Valar… Melkor and Sauron… Everything is just so… Big… Though I don’t think it will be made into a movie. The time frame, even just the quenta silmarillion, is just so long… If they divided it into parts, maybe it will be possible.

As for the Hobbit, I think I would die to see that movie. It’s my favorite Tolkien book ever. It has all the good parts of LotR. Adventure, battles, battle heroes, dwarves, elves, and the greatest Hobbit of em all… Plus there’s a dragon… I sure hope it will be placed on the silver screen someday.
