The extended FOTR had an extra scene in there with Gimli, but it sort of seemed out of place in the way they filmed it. Alot of the stuff doesnt make sense when you watch the extended cut. In ROTK Gandalf gets his staff shattered by the Witch King, but then we see him holding it again later on.Another part that I missed in the movies was Gimli’s devotion to Galadriel. I loved it in the books, but it was mostly ignored in the movies.

I got each extended version around the time they came out, I remember getting The Fellowship of the Ring in November of '02, it was the first DVD I bought, and I think I need to get a new one since all the disks are scratched from overuse to the point where I cant watch them anymore:shrug:
Anyway Im getting excited for The Hobbit to come out in theaters in a few years, anyone else? Too bad Peter Jackson is not directing, only producing.

There was never the part between Gimli and Eomer in the extended editions, was there? The part in Two Towers (book) where Gimli defends Galadriel against Eomer when he accuses her of being a sorceress.
Also, in the movies we never see Legolas (and Gimli) leaving Middle-Earth for the Undying Lands.

Definitely excited! Do you know if Ian Holm is being cast as Bilbo again? I hope he is, for continuity’s sake if nothing else.

We’ll just have to wait and see. How old is Ian Holm anyway? Bilbo himself should look to be in his thirties… he’s fifty in the books if I recall correctly. But he’s a Hobbit (duh), so he should look to be in his thirties.

Pretty much everything with Arwen and Aragorn was in the appendices, so maybe they could have left it in.

Yes, but their part and some of the other characters parts were kind of left unfinished-- it ended rather abruptly at Gondor. A pity the film makers couldn’t have fit in a better ending at Minas Tirith for the characters that were not traveling back to the Shire.

I would like to confess a doh! moment experienced while watching the Two Towers. I read the books in college [70’s] and have watched the films a few times; maybe I just forgot this point from the books, but . . . in the scene where the elves show up to support Helm’s Deep, I was suddenly struck by the sacrifice they were making for humanity. And I was further moved by the simple, profound honesty of their motivation: to honor the alliance.
Anyone ever think about the parallels between elves and angels-- for example as an ontologically higher form of being which stoops to serve humanity?

That was actually Jules Bass and Arthur Rankin Jr.
Ralph Bakshi had nothing to do with the animated version of The Hobbit, although he did do Lord of the Ring. The film was taken from FOTR and TT. He planned to do ROTK but the first film was a bomb and he abandoned the project.
Rankin/Bass eventually did Return in the same poor quality that they did The Hobbit in.
