Yeah, I saw that a couple of days ago. It said Peter Jackson was going to produce it. I thought he directed LOTR too.

It also said that they’re going to film 2 movies back to back like LOTR. How can they make 2 movies out of the Hobbit? and Why?

I must have missed that part of it. I agree- two movies would be excessive, I think.

The Sil is not a novel in the common usage of the term. There are no set main characters or settings or the like. The Sil is more like a compiled history than a novel. So not much chance of a movie there.

Mel Brooks did a movie on the history of the world, but I don’t think I want to see him do The Silmarillion. We’d probably get Yogurt from Spaceballs playing the part of Fëanor, or something.

I’m just grateful that the Disney people never got their hands on LOTR. Can you imagine an animated Disneyized version? Cutsie little elves and dwarves, Gandalf as a bumbling comedic old
fool, a talking dragon sidekick (never mind that there isn’t one in LOTR–they’d put one in anyway, voiced by Eddie Murphy), Ents singing and dancing…I shudder to think of it.

The Silmarillion would be nice to see on the big screen. The battles are just so big… Armies of Balrogs… Reinforcements coming fom the Valar… Melkor and Sauron… Everything is just so… Big… Though I don’t think it will be made into a movie. The time frame, even just the quenta silmarillion, is just so long… If they divided it into parts, maybe it will be possible.

As for the Hobbit, I think I would die to see that movie. It’s my favorite Tolkien book ever. It has all the good parts of LotR. Adventure, battles, battle heroes, dwarves, elves, and the greatest Hobbit of em all… Plus there’s a dragon… I sure hope it will be placed on the silver screen someday.

I liked the Silmarillion the best out of all of Tolkien’s books… that and some of the stuff from Unfinished Tales. But everything that he wrote (and that his son is now dealing out to the public) was fantastic. Did any one else hear about the History of the Hobbit that’s being released?

I got the extended versions for Christmas. I must agree, although they are wonderful, they lack from the book. And really, I always thought something was missing from the end of Return of the King, and then I read the book and realized they didn’t do the end of the fellowship justice, at least, not from the prespective of the rest of the members.

Yea, they should have left the battles with Sauruman in the Shire in… his fall on the huge spiked wheel thingy was quite gruesome. And they had some stuff from the appendices that they should have left in. Oh, well.

Mmm. What really got to me was inconsistancy of the evenstar. In the book, Arwen gives Frodo the evenstar before he departs Gondor for the shire. In the movie of course, she gives it to Aragorn. In return of the King, Eldarion is wearing the evenstar in Arwen’s vision, but in the scene where Aragorn faces Sauron in palathir, the evenstar falls from his neck and shatters, however when he rides to the black gate if you look closely enough it’s still around his neck. So the scene with the palathir just doesn’t make much sense

This is precisely why PJ shouldn’t have messed with the order of events in the Two Towers. It was way too short. It took up about a third of the ROTK that could have been used for the Scourging of the Shire.

Ralph Bakshi already did it back in the 70s. Wizards was wonderful - The Hobbit was almost exactly as you describe it with ghastly songs and Bilbo looking like H. R. Puffenstuff - you might have to google that but that’s what all of us thought back then.

I didn’t think it was very clear… I’ve seen the extended version twice for all of the films, except for the Fellowship of the Ring (once). Phooey.
