Tom Cruise to be a godparent!

I would think they could ensure the public that it will not occur since the godparents have to promise to help raise the kid Catholic if the parents die. This is normal part of the baptismal ceremony as far as I know.

I just wish Cardinal Mahoney would take a stand against this.

No they don’t. They promise to help the parents raise the child in the faith. Should the parents die, the godparents have no legal standing unless the parents made them legal guardians. It would be up to the legal guardians to decide what contact the child would have with the godparents.

Well can’t the church at least stop this? I’ve always thought godparents had to be current Catholics.

Considering he’s a Scientologist he doesn’t even qualify as a Christian witness, let alone godfather.

The church would not allow my brother to be “Godfather” to my child because he no longer attended church even though he was raised a Catholic.

They did allow his wife, a practicing Christian to be “Godmother” but I had to pick a church-going Catholic as “Godfather”.

Given that Ms Lopez was married twice before marrying her current husband, without annulment as far as I know, and Marc Anthony at least once before, same, I hardly think finding a solid traditional practicing Catholic godparent for their child is high on their list of priorities. 🤷

1.) I agree with Lily’s statement.
2.) This is so stereotypically Hollywood!
3.) Where’s Mel Gibson when he’s needed??? He should come down upon them in the MadMax vehicle, with icons of Bob Hope and Loretta Young, and Jim Caviezel along side!!!

:knight2: Woe to you, Hollywoodians!!!

Bob Newhart is still practicing, and would make an excellent godfather for the whole family. They need one.

Are the children being baptised in a Catholic Church?
That was going to be my question. Whatever happened to “delaying” baptism if there is a reasonable liklihood that the child will not be raised Catholic? Invalid marriage, nonCatholic “Godparents” (who wouldn’t even Baptise their own child. Katie’s parents wanted to, Tom wouldn’t allow it  ), and do J.Lo and M.A. even go to Mass? For some reason, I doubt it. Hmmm. I guess the “rules” don’t apply if you’re rich and famous?

In Christ,

Ellen

If the Catholic church where the baptism takes place allows this…I would be very much surprised. However, there is a good chance the child is not going to be baptized Catholic, possibly Christian instead. More reasons to pray if people are designing their own form of religion:(

I’m not quite sure but I think I read somewhere a while back that both of them, ( J Lo and M A that is) were interested in Scientology.
I doubt if the Children are going to be baptised Catholic, what Catholic Church would do it? It would have to be some renegade Church not in compliance with The Vatican, and we all know there are a few of them.😦

You might think that, and I hope you’re right, but this is LA…You might want to do a web search on “Hollywood Catholic parishes” and see what you get. Also remember that people with money to burn can travel to places that are more liberal, where they like the priest better because he does what they want.

I believe Mr. and Mrs. Anthony are from the New York area, are they not? Surely, they want relatives in attendance…more press coverage, too.

OK, Glad I clicked the link and read the “article,” at first I was under the impression that Marc and J were going to be Godparents to Katie and Tom’s Baby.

OK, as far as I know Katie is still a practicing Catholic. Only one OFFICIAL godparent needs be named at the baptism…if Katie is still Catholic then she qualifies. NONE of us have reliable information as to status of the prior marriages of J Lo or Marc A. So, this is a private matter between this couple and their parish priest. That PUBLICALLY Tom is also a godparent is sad and not doctrinal, but might only be publicity and not an actual NAMED GP.

Creating scandal by naming TOM as a GP is bad, suppossing we know the status of prior marriages of JLo and Marc is a sin. Leave this to the priest conducting the baptism.

I will say one thing

Scientology and Tom Cruise scares me :bigyikes:

Seems typical of nominal Catholicism. Marc Anthony and Lopez probably couldn’t tell you the purpose for and the signifigance of baptising their children…to them it’s more of a cultural than religious thing.

They will do baptism, 1st communion, confirmation, and quinceñera(for the girl) all with out any proper catechism…just like my family.
😦 🤷

I don’t understand, are you agreeing or disagreeing with me? because you seem to be saying the same thing I am.

I don’t understand what having relatives, or them being from NY has to do with whether or not the babies will be baptised in a Catholic Church:shrug:

You said it could only be a at “renegade” Catholic parish. I’m saying that it might be at what passes in LA as a “normal” Catholic parish. There are lists and lists of parishes in the LA archdiocese that are **not **considered “renegade” but will baptize these children. If I’m mistaken I’m sorry.

Further, it doesn’t have to happen in LA. All these people have money. They can fly wherever, to whatever really, truly Catholic parish and have it done. It doesn’t make it right, but it can indeed happen.

So, there is a possibility that some priest who is in good standing someplace will just baptize these children, without the hope that they will be raised Catholic, because their parents were bapitzed Catholic, their half-siblings have been baptized Catholic, and because of the celebrity the couple offers.
OK, as far as I know Katie is still a practicing Catholic…No she is not. She became a Scientologist in 2005.

NONE of us have reliable information as to status of the prior marriages of J Lo or Marc A. Yes, we do, as this couple has celebrity status, and the State of Calfornia has searchable databases online. The putative Mr. and Mrs. Anthony were married at her home with 40 or so relatives and close friends in attendance, by a JP, four days after Mr. Anthony’s divorce from the first Mrs. Anthony. It is hardly private. While they denied it for months, it is a matter of public record that can be researched online through the County of Los Angeles.
Creating scandal by naming TOM as a GP is bad, suppossing we know the status of prior marriages of JLo and Marc is a sin. Leave this to the priest conducting the baptism. Why? Priests do all sorts of things outside canon law all the time. The possibility that this priest, whoever he is, falls under the juristiction of an archdiocese that has questionable policies means that the faithful can certainly question the situation, as amost all of them have to live as practicing Catholics in order to have their children bapitzed, or at least present proof that there is a reasonable hope for the children to be raised Catholic.
Here’s what gets me: There are Hollyowood celebs who are Catholics who at least make an effort. Fine. They do their best and toddle along. They will not lead people astray in their celebrity.

Then there are Hollywood celebs who get to twist canon law and do pretty much what they darn well please. Priests let them, heck, cardinals let them. They give the poorly catechized the idea that they, too, can just go off and do whatever as well, because so-and-so did it.

I realize God is their judge, and somebody these celebs are going to have to face Him. But I so hope and pray for the others who are being led astray by them- and Yes, in that instance, I do have the right to discern that their behavior is deplorable, and that it is wrong.
