Too mushy at Peace?

None of the above.

If it must be done, the proper way to do the sign of peace is in the Roman fashion. You may have seen the Pope doing this when he celebrates Mass.

You embrace the person and exchange a “kiss”.

It’s a solemn and traditional method. It would be a vast improvement from what we see today.
Actually, that is how my PV exchanges the sign of Peace with the altar servers.

We are all taught that this is the time to “settle disagreements before bringing your offering.” The time to make sure everything is “cool” between you and your brother (or sister) before you take communion as Jesus mentioned in the Gospel of Matthew,Matthew 5:23
What is the provenance of this? Where does the idea that this is how we’re supposed to understand the kiss or sign of peace at Mass come from? Is it an official teaching? Is it in the CCC? Some other Church document?

Frankly, it doesn’t make any sense to me at all. Why would anybody assume that the person whom I really need to reconcile with is beside me at Mass? He’s just as likely to be somebody from this forum. :o

Well thats your decision. However, being of French descent, kissing on the lips is the norm between husband and wife, and a peck on the cheek could cause one to sleep on the couch that night. 😃

Mass isn’t just between you and God. Its between God and the community you’re part of.

Kissing on the lips doesn’t place the spouce above God. God joined man and woman to be as one. My affection for my wife is following what God designed.

Yeah, aren’t human beings doing human things just awful? [Edited]

Hi Jim!

Greetings! You’re right, its just me I’m sure.

You know what I think of on Christmas? I think of all the lonely people who have no one. I think of all the depressed people who have no money to buy gifts.

Anyways the point is, lets not be too jubilant. Lets not forget that the person standing behind you might not have anyone to hug or kiss.

Lets be calm and restrained. It might be a happy day for us, but for many its a sad day. There are always those for whom loneliness is the only companion we know.

Peace be with you.

Since the vast majority of us at the 12:30 p.m. Mass today were in various stages of cold or flu with people all around coughing and wiping their noses (not everyone had a kleenex either …), there were far more friendly waves and smiles at the Sign of Peace today instead of handshakes or hugs.

You forgot the option of - nothing. I prefer that the priest extends the Peace of Christ to the people, they offer “and also with you”, and we carry on with Mass. There is no need for people to share - it is totally optional, and most times absolutely disruptive to the prayerful atmosphere of the Mass.

This is what I prefer also. Even when the Sign of Peace is passed with appropriate solemnity and without people running all over the church, most every person I’ve encountered during that, their eyes are on the next person before the first person says their response. It’s not something that most human’s seem to be able to do, even the very devout. It doesn’t mean much to the majority (other than social time) so why have it in our worship of Him?

I definitely agree, however some (mostly elderly) people will say a brief (with shining eyes) “Have a good/blessed week” or something like that (even giving a smile and slight nod of their head), right after Mass and that has always meant so much more to me than the Sign of Peace. It shows that they want to say it and really mean it, rather than being part of something they’re supposed to say.

The priest offers the Peace of Christ to the people, the people respond “and also with you” (in Latin, of course). Then he turns back to the altar and continues with the rest of the Mass.

Perfect, prayerful, non-intrusive. 👍

Our parish does this at our Novus Ordo Masses as well.

Nice approach!
👍
I have NEVER been a fan of all this hand grabbing during Mass in the first place. People usually spend the first 40 minutes of Mass sneezing, blowing their beaks or coughing into their hands and wiping kids runny noses etc… Then we get to have a massive exchange of these germs during the sign of peace. Can you imagine how many cold and viruses are spread every Sunday this way? It’s simply not necessary.

::HACK HACK COUGH:: My hands are to myself, especially right now, even if no one elses are. I’ve even started coughing in my elbow just to keep the germs on my hands down to a minimum.

God Bless!

Now I, too, could go for this in a big way.

I believe there are many who are uncomfortable with handshaking (and the holding of hands at the Our Father,) but wanting to conform, they do it anyway. AND If someone extends their hand to me at the Kiss of Peace, but does not look me in the eye while saying “Peace be with You,” I feel it is rather insincere and being done only because they think it is part of the Mass.
