Vatican City, Mar 21, 2018 / 05:42 am (CNA/EWTN News).- On Wednesday Pope Francis accepted the resignation of Msgr. Dario Edoardo Vigano as prefect of the Secretariat for Communications in wake of what has been dubbed by many as the 'Lettergate' scandal, which has dominated Catholic media the past week.
The announcement was made in a March 21 statement from Vatican spokesman Greg Burke, who said said Msgr. Lucio Adrián Ruiz, secretary of the Vatican communications office, will take charge until a new prefect is named.

“Not content with writing just a resignation letter Viganò extends the agony with a missive of some 350 words including a review of human history, a summary of the pontificate, excerpts from Bible, a pie recipe, and a wedding toast.”

I haven’t seen the text of this letter, but it sounds interesting.

Yeah, it looks like he wasn’t really fired/resigned, but rather demoted, in a fashion. I wouldn’t be surprised if he was just used as a scapegoat for something Pope Francis ordered or approved himself.

Many Catholics who complained were rightly upset a letter was not just incomplete but edited to be misleading. But the problem is not just the mishandling of Pope Benedict Emeritus’ concerns, but the matter that caused Pope Emeritus, and many other Catholics, to be concerned about. There is a recent pattern of appointing or including the views of people who dissent from Catholic teaching.

That pattern is the bigger scandal. “Lettergate” is also a scandal, but not the only one.

Not sure why you’re using Catholic in quotes, but it’s not the fact that it was an incomplete letter that is the problem. It’s what was now has been revealed to have been left out that is the issue. In this scenario, it was Msgr. Vigano, and Msgr. Vingano alone who did the Holy Father no favors.

Failing to mention that the letter also stated that Pope Benedict had not actually read the entirety of the writings is no minor detail. It changes the context of what was published from the letter, and that was a foolish move on the part of Msgr Vingano.

That was all a bit weird. But, as I’ve said before, this is kind of how I picture the Vatican these days. It fits with the whole ‘needing reform’ thing. Out of control.

I see. Any time anyone criticizes anything that comes out of the Vatican, including a transgression of basic, rudimentary journalistic ethics…you get defined as an “enemy” of the pope.

This episode was a disgrace, and solely because of the actions of the communications office in doctoring a letter and failing to practice rudimentary journalistic ethics.

Francis doesn’t need “enemies” with (sort of former) staff like this.

Umm…enemies? They don’t need no enemies. Their wounds are self inflicted!!! Here we have the Vatican’s communications office doctoring a photograph of a letter of Pope Benedict XVI, IOW, spreading fake news. And then you have Pope Francis warning against the “crafty serpent” of fake news last month, and blasting the journalists that delivered it. Pot meet kettle?

I see, you are choosing to ignore how many people are enemies of this pope and would use this failure as a mode of attack.
There are a few people. half of whom have set up their own websites, who denounce all popes and almost all bishops since 1960. If you want to call them “enemies”, ok.

Besides this tiny fringe, there are many people who have supported Vatican II, and all the popes. This group, which includes cardinals, bishops, priests, religious and laity, as well as respected journalists, has identified serious ways in which the recent Vatican indirectly or directly promotes certain views or practices at variance with Catholic teaching. It may not stem from Pope Francis personally, but it is high up in the Vatican.

The scandal with “Lettergate” is not just how the Vatican Media office handled it, but that the views of a dissenter were promoted in the first place. You don’t have to agree with this second group, but please don’t label this second group as “enemies” of the pope.

If you want to say that the Vatican Media office handled this horribly, I will agree with you. If you want to say the Pope’s only enemies are anti Vatican II Catholics, I will disagree with you. The Pope has a great deal of enemies and it was apparent long before this and this mistake has handed them nothing but fodder.
Apparent only in your imagination. You call anyone that does not agree with your view or criticizes the Pope is an enemy. This is just not true and I bet the Pope would agree with me.

YOU need to stop being so judgmental of others. Who are you to judge?

They not only handled it horribly but I believe attempted to lie to the public about what Pope Emeritus wrote. Thus trying to make it look like he approved of PF work when he hadn’t even read it yet. That is a lie and the perfect example of creating fake news!

I don’t know that they were attempting to create fake news, but I agree with you that they did by omission.
So you are not a fool because you can see enemies everywhere none exsist but you can’t see a deliberate act of distorting news as something other than fake news.

I can see noww why you chose the name jagged!

It is kind that you don’t think I am fool, but the Pope most definitely has enemies and they are exploiting this unforced error.
I would certainly never call you a fool even if I think you are one. I’m was just pointing out the inconsistencies in your conspiracy theory meter being very subjective. Please point out an example of these enemies you speak of so I can be more aware of them.
