Actually every theology teacher is suposed to seek the mandatum from the local bishop (Ex corde Ecclesiae). Most do not, thanks to the Land-O-Lakes doctine that “academic freedom” trumps Truth. We should not be left to our own devices to “fish out” matters that the Church regulates for us. Catholic universities and their faculty should submit to legitimate authority.Called to do what - avoid schools that condone teaching contrary and doctrinally incorrect things?
I don’t think the Church interviews every professor that a Catholic university hires or examines every outside speaker that comes in or every student group or cause that the school financially supports. This are things that, for better or worse, are left to us to fish out.
For instance, hypothetically speaking, if my school is awarding public service credit for volunteering at Planned Parenthood, this should raise a big red flag.
