What do all of you guys think of the Charismatic “renewal” which seems to be prevalent in the Church now? What do you think about the claim that another Pentecost is taking place? Do you think trads ought to reject this whole movement? Please, give me your thoughts

I am in a charismatic group.

We pray. We sing hymns.

We have those who like Latin instead of English chant at mass, in our group. We have what you would call trads.

That kind of blows your premise out of the water.

Oh and there are tongues…

I’m asking a question, not establishing a premise.

I’m not in a charismatic group, but I have my own personal experiences with the Spirit that coincides… but this is why I avoid a lot of traditionalist teaching I see. They just don’t get it at all.

May I ask what you mean by “personal experiences with the Spirit that coincides?”

How can it be a valid premise if there are those who consider themselves traditional, in the charismatic movement

It’s not a premise, it’s a question.

And the fact that they prefer Latin Chant at the mass doesn’t make them “traditional” per se. It shows that they’re in line with what the Church has ordained.

And I asked how it can be true if , already it’s been shown that those preferring the Latin mass are in my group.
Yes it makes them traditional, they prefer the old ways. They would ID as traditional.

We are all in line with what the Church has Ordained, even those who prefer Mass in the vernacular…

I was filled with the Holy Spirit the minute I believed in the gospel. I didn’t speak in tongues afaik, but it was very much like something St. Teresa describes… a kind of outpouring and ecstatic prayer. And obviously, I wasn’t Catholic… I only had just believed. Which may be troubling for a traditionalist. Maybe they think I needed water baptism first (not sure?), but I couldn’t tell you why it happened to me. The Spirit blows where it wills.

And when I hear other charismatics speak, I can share some other experiences. I don’t talk about it a lot though.

The General Instruction of the Roman Missal, the document that tells priests how to say the new mass, states the following:

“41. The main place should be given, all things being equal, to Gregorian chant, as being proper to the Roman Liturgy. Other kinds of sacred music, in particular polyphony, are in no way excluded, provided that they correspond to the spirit of the liturgical action and that they foster the participation of all the faithful.”

So actually, that’s the way it still is.

I guess it depends on the definition of the Charismatic Movement. The only experience I have had with it was when a friend of mine went to a Catholic event where everyone was prayed over and then people would fall down because they received the Holy Spirit. I don’t know though if this is generally what Charismatic events consist of. The way I see it is, if it brings people to God, I am glad for it.

Oh please, we are allowed to sing hymns in the vernacular, with Vatican permission. Find that one

And chant in the vernacular. We did This past week.

Whoever eats this body and drinks this Blood…during procession

I’m not denying that. I’m just saying that Gregorian Chant is to be given “pride of place” in the liturgy, as stated in the GIRM.

No one here falls over. It seems to be uniquely American.

As the Charismatic Renewal movement has the Church’s approval, there isn’t a reason for any Catholic to reject it. That said, I think one is called to it or not. My aunt, a Dominican nun, was instrumental in the movement many years ago. My parents were very involved. I have zero interest. Yet we’re all Catholic. Back in the day, Maria Von Trapp attempted to participate and decided it wasn’t for her. I’d choose to hang with her.

Ok so balance your statement with what the Vatican says,

Fact check. She cries!

Also be aware that one of the original charismatics is active on CAF. One of that first group.
