Rome, Italy, Feb 11, 2014 / 05:07 pm (CNA/EWTN News).- A former translator of Benedict XVI has predicted that the retired pontiff’s legacy will only grow, given the “wonderful freshness” and clarity of his writings.

“I think the judgment of history will be very kind, very generous, because once all the topical controversies have moved into the past, people will see what he said in all of its luminous clarity,” Monsignor Philip Whitmore, Rector of the English College in Rome, told CNA Feb. 10.

He said the retired pontiff will “really be admired and respected for the great man, for the great teacher that he was.”

I agree. He is a great theologian and was a great Pope, and hopefully he will be recognized as such.

“Predicts”? IMO, the greatest living theologian on earth as it is! I see it this way: No other theologian on earth was trusted with the charism of infallibility - whether used or not - or bore the responsibility for leading the world’s Christians to all truth.

He made a few mistakes, just like any other Man, but he Was a great Pope in many other ways.

I agree. He said a lot of Right things, but I suspect some folks focus on the Wrong things he said, as if they were “infallible” when they weren’t. ~I~ Listen to Pope Francis. Feel free to PM me so that we don’t clutter up this thread with… “stuff”…

What a great Pope we had in Pope Benedict, look at all the Anglican Pastors that he found a way for them to come into the Church, a truly great man, and so Holy also.

I have such admiration for him, even sent him Xmas Card, along with Pope Francis to.

We have been so blessed in our Popes, all different but a man for the time, or as St. Thomas Moore was presented, A man for all Seasons.

May the Lord Bless Pope Benedict XV1 and Pope Francis.

Pope Benedict stepped down…says alot…and adds to the fact, he will never be forgotten!

He is a great theologian…and a very humble man…

All Popes for the past 100 years have been really holy men who have added something specific and invaluable to the Church. Benedict certainly did this.

Let’s pray that the Cardinals continue in choosing holy men as a not-so-holy Pope would be disastrous in our modern times of communication and openness.

They have a lot on their shoulders.

Benedict XVI was a true scholar, but also had the gift to reach the masses. Some of his quotes, even when Cardinal, I know by heart.

I admit I didn’t have the best opinion of him when he was pope. So far I’ve read the 1st two Jesus of Nazareth books he wrote and I was shocked at how beautiful of a writer he is. He’s one of those people where every word they write makes you think of God. Very sensitive, merciful, and loving. I’m looking forward to Spirit of the Liturgy.
