Coninuted

“Some assimilation is required in order to survive in America. For example, the Qur’an discourages the borrowing of money and paying of interest. This simply cannot be adhered to in a society where cars and housing are necessary. Unlike larger cities, Minneapolis is severely lacking in public transportation. The buses are somewhat inefficient, and only recently was a minor train system developed (the light rail system). While it isn’t impossible, it is generally rather difficult to attain a vehicle without borrowing funds, especially when the car is needed to make money. Also, Somalian families are traditionally large, and with three or four children, it can be hard to find an apartment or other rentable space suitable for such a family. Attaining a loan is definitely necessary when buying a house. Despite these requirements that go against their beliefs, many Somalians have understood that this is how society in Minnesota, and all over America, works.

“It is important to address that Somalians do not hate America. While this seems like an odd statement, many people opposed to their immigration believe that they don’t want to be in America, and dislike residing here. While they were forced here, in a way, the majority of Somalian immigrants have no plans to return to their home country, and have become an integral part of our society. Adjustment may be difficult, and they may miss their life in Somalia, but they too are fed up with the anarchy in their home country.”

What harm does this alleged comment by the president do? Hurt a couple people’s feelings?

Well the media would have you think the entire world’s feelings are hurt! 😳

How much time have you spent in the Somalian community? Have you actually been there as I have? In small numbers, they might have assimilated. Maybe. But in the numbers they are in now, no they will not. Their culture is not compatible with American culture and yet it is argued that we need to adapt to them? No, thank you, but no.

Because we are so different from them, it is a lot easier for Somalians to hang together and operate the way they did in the old country. There is no way around that incompatibility: if we are to preserve the best of American culture, we cannot adapt to Somalian culture. It is they who have to adapt to us just as my ancestors had to adapt to the America they found themselves in. No one is exempt from that requirement; I am not feeling sorry for the Somalians on that basis. We should be free to admit immigrants on the basis of their closeness and adaptability to our culture and to refuse admittance to immigrants we think will not assimilate well.

I have been commenting on an article posted by Ridgerunner. I have no comment on your personal experience nor on the validity of the beliefs that you hold as a result of your experience. Why would I?

“The reaction from the United Nations human rights spokesman, Rupert Colville, was uncharacteristically blunt. He described the remark as ‘racist.’

“There is no other word one can use but ‘racist,’ he said at a briefing in Geneva. ‘You cannot dismiss entire countries and continents as ‘shitholes,’ whose entire populations, who are not white, are therefore not welcome.’ “

Seems as if there are a lot of hurt feelings, and then there is the loss of regard for the U.S. in the international community. I realize that might not be important to you personally, but it is a matter of some import.

One shouldn’t make too much of language, but I am given to understand that virtually everybody in Norway speaks English as well as their own language. And their cultural heritage is, in every way western.

But there are divergences too.
It is funny how we are supposed to celebrate diversity and the supposed blessing we get from different cultures. But the same people who promote that idea suddenly don’t believe in culture when you are talking about Norwegian immigration. Suddenly they ask, what is culture? How can we identify similar cultures? Suddenly all cultures are the same. Our days of the week are named for Norse gods and yet people will act as if the similarities in culture escape them.

This guy isn’t too smart. Trump didn’t mention race he did. I’m sure Trump would call plenty of trailer parks the same thing, as would I and lots of other people. If most ****hole countries are occupied by certain people then it isn’t Trump’s fault. There is nothing wrong in a truthful observation.

The lack of reflection by certain people is really amazing. Why do they suppose that any given country has the qualities it does? Because of the weather?

Let’s see, he calls majority black countries sh*tholes and says we need more Norwegians - you know, like, white people.

That is racist.

Also very interesting for a Republican. We want fewer capitalists and more democratic socialists?

Another incoherent rant from the orange one.

No, it is uncharitable to say he is racist. He said we don’t need people from poor, high crime countries but do need people from wealthy, low crime countries. He didn’t mention race at all. If people see race in this then they are the racists.

Sorry, that doesn’t fly. Not at all.

Nigerian Americans hold more college degrees than white Americans, more than Norwegians. So, tell me, if it isn’t racial animus, what is it? Keep those hard working, high achieving black people away and go for the white European socialists?

So he says they’ve done all they are going to, and instead we should try be more like them?

A ridiculous demand, We already are multi-cultural and do assimilate other bits, where it makes sense for us.

I’m sorry but do you have any idea what Norway is like and what Nigeria is like? Just one statistic, you are twenty times more likely to be murdered in Nigeria. Twenty times!

But again, Trump didn’t mention race, you did. Who is it then that is the racist?

So the question is, why shouldn’t we let Nigerians into the US? They are educated, they are productive, their kids are well educated. Why would we not want these people in the US?

Because immigrants from Norway will have an easier time integrating into the US culture and are more likely to be able to an economic contributor to the US than an economic burden?
We admit individuals. There is no rational basis for using country of origin as a proxy for integration of economic impact. There are more direct assessment that can be applied to individuals, independent of country of origin.

No they aren’t in a general sense. In a general sense Nigerians are not desirable immigrants. Some may be, but less as a percentage than from other countries.

The main reason we don’t want to let them in is they will be subject to vile racism. For their own sake we must protect them from this. Why would you want these poor people to suffer so? Unless of course you don’t really believe the US is racist.
