I am reading Mary L Trump’s book “Never Enough, Too Much” and it is covered there as well. I’ve never bought a Trump tell all until now ( actually my wife bought it at “SAMS” ). At the current progress in the book, it makes me feel sorry for Donald. Absolutely Zero nurturing from his Mother or Father. It is written from the perspective of a Psychiatrist.

A lot of people who emigrated to the U.S. weren’t in the best relaitonship with the rulers where they came from. My Alsatian ancestors came here largely because they were sick of being drafted; alternatively by France and alternatively by Germany.

I have a copy of my Irish great-grandfather’s citizenship certificate. On it is printed that he swore renunciation of allegiance to all foreign potentates and princes including but not limited to Victoria, Queen of Great Britain and Ireland. He said that was the easiest oath he ever took.

I’m fascinated that somehow in America one has to support Israel to be American.
Not what I said. Her “criticism” of Israel goes far beyond lack of support. She can support or not support any country she chooses, but she doesn’t have an immunity from criticism.

It’s written from the perspective of a disaffected relative. No doubt with an ulterior motive🙄

US drafted until Nixon cut the draft albeit in steps. Remember your draft number?

True in America too, though not for as long a period. Mostly Irish served in the Union army because they had settled in the north. And too, they were drafted as soon as they stepped off the ships in New York. A particular Confederate Irish brigade in Missouri was termed “Kelly’s Irish Brigade” named for the colonel who led it. It was also known as the “Washington Blues” because they wore a blue uniform at the start of the Civil War, but then later changed to gray when the hazard of friendly fire became a concern.

Every year there is a re-enactment of the Battle of Wilson’s Creek in Springfield, in which the Washington Blues or Kelly’s Irish Brigade participated. As with most re-enacters, each unit strives for authenticity with considerable effort. The Washington Blues re-enacters come from St. Louis and arrive in their blue uniforms. At the real battle, they arrived late on the evening before the battle, and didn’t have time to pitch tents. so they slept on the ground. The re-enacters for Kelly’s Irish Brigade always sleep on the ground, even if it’s raining in honor of the original fighters. Here’s their song:

Well, the Union Army had many Irish but it was not ‘mostly Irish’. Half of Wisconsin’s ‘Iron Brigade’ were native born Americans and there were numbers of Germans, Scandinavians and Irish in the mix. As to the draft, it is remembered that the Irish in NYC fomented the draft riots in which many blacks were killed, In one incident, rioters set a black New York orphanage on fire, nailed the doors shut and then shot at anyone who tried to flee.

Irish fought on both sides during the Civil War and the archbishop of NY at the time (the traditional head of American Catholicism) was very cool as to the issue of freeing the slaves in America.

The treatment of Brett Kavanaugh?

Party of Planned Parenthood and maybe even infanticide?

You can’t be serious as John McEnroe quipped.
You deflect. Why do you and conservatives refuse to deal with Trump’s low, insulting statements and falsehoods? It seems that the Trump apologists just ignore them.

The result is that the credibility of Trump and his supporters is lowered.

Meagher was Union. “Kelly’s Irish Brigade” was Confederate.

If I’m not terribly mistaken, at some battle or other Meagher’s brigade was up against a Confederate Irish brigade. Can’t remember where. Similar to the fact that, at Vicksburg, the First Missouri (Union) was across the trenches from the First Missouri (Confederate) Kelly’s Irish Brigade was probably part of the Confederate First Missouri at the time.

I guess there have been all kinds of civil wars in history. Still, the idea that one Irish brigade would fight another in a country in which probably few if any had been born, seems strange. But then, fighting against your brother’s unit, as at Vicksburg, would have as well.

My father’s people came from Ireland, but their name (and mine) is actually an Anglicized version of a Scandinavian name. Their trek was from Denmark to Normandy to England to Ireland with various historical events. Irish really have been wanderers and adventurers for centuries.
