Nasty seems pretty tame compared to some attacks from Washington and Jefferson’s era:They weren’t talking about abortion. They were talking about tax brackets. And furthermore. No it’s not. Not on stage before millions of people across the world. It’s childish and utterly undignified for someone running for the highest office in the land. A seat that the likes of Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, and Roosevelt held. It doesn’t matter if people think it’s true, or agree with it. There’s a right time and a wrong time to say certain things. Behaving like that was wrong.
Jefferson’s campaign attacked Adams as “a hideous hermaphroditical character with neither the force and firmness of a man, nor the gentleness and sensibility of a woman.”
Adams campaign shot back calling Jefferson “a mean-spirited, low-lived fellow, the son of a half-breed Indian squaw, sired by a Virginia mulatto father.”
Please excuse me if I don’t think calling someone nasty is a big deal.
