illegals over the past 40 years have done more damage to this country than all the wars, depressions, and illnesses combined. It not just here but also in Europe the damage is being done. This country and I doubt most countries in europe will survive the culture change that will take place.

Let me give you another great example of immigrants being a assets to America. Disney was going to lay off every single American IT worker and bring in immigrants from India. Now the best workers from India have great jobs there in india, we get the lower performing ones. But too many Ameircans sent angry emails to Disney. I was one of them. My wife and I were in the process of buying a Disney vacation package, I cancelled it over their great idea of getting rid of american workers. Disney changed their mind over the uproar.

Its not just the illegals coming across the border, but also the Muslim we are moving into cities by the 10’s of thousands. They are not going to become americans they are going to demand we become Muslims. Just watch, in two or three more generations this country will either be a part of Mexico or it will be a Muslim country.
How do you feel about LEGAL immigration in significant numbers by Mexicans, Muslims, and Indians?

I think if you reread my post you can answer your own question. But I am against non american coming to this country to take jobs away from americans. H1B’s and such are proven to be less qualified than many americans out of work. It just those americans expect a certain standard of living. I am sick and tired of Americans being second class citizen in their own country. Is your job in danger from immigration? I wonder how many catholic that support “open borders” would be willing to lose their job or their retirement to allow those illegals and immigrants to live here in the USA. I have yet to see one person on any catholic board that supports a “pathway to citizenship” be in danger of losing their jobs to an illegal.

How do the ideas put forward by Trump mesh with the Church’s social teaching?

I am pretty sure that the Bishops would soundly reject Trumps ideas.
I bet they would too, but most bishops like the Pope, have little or no understanding of economics.

All very good posts.

Ted Cruz’s plan, one can research the bill he drew up:

Expand Green Cards, give legal residency but not citizenship. This sounds reasonable to me, this also has been said to be the direction this is headed towards. Also, security for the border meaning first, more boots on the ground I have heard is the first thing requested.

Though, it takes some consideration and reflection. We will not have an ideal solution but perhaps a compromise on both sides.

If you are against legal immigration and a path to citizenship, as you appear to be, then we really disagree. Every group of people–including the German, Irish, Italians, Jews, Russians, Puerto Ricans, Cubans, Latinos, Koreans, Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese, Indians, Arabs–have been immigrants and have partially or fully assimilated to the social and cultural norms of the country and contributed to its diversity and strength. Yet with every wave of immigration, there have been the customary outcries that the new immigrants will overrun our nation and bring with them strange customs, languages, and religions, while taking over the jobs of “real” Americans, who themselves were once new immigrants. I have heard such nationalistic sentiment too many times to have much faith in it. Being against illegal immigration is one thing, but being opposed to Mexican, Muslim, and Indian legal immigration due to an unfounded fear of the “outsider” is quite another.

Shrewd as he is, Donald Trump is capitalizing on such sentiment.

I noticed you didnt tell me what you do for a living. What government cuts or cut your check every week? Or was it a charity?

If immigrants really voted for the GOP instead of 9-1 for democrats, we would have a wall at the border 100 ft tall with snipers every 100 yards and no visas would ever be issued. We are going to let 40 million become citizen just to turn every state blue.

I am a psychology professor and was not one of the protected minorities during the hiring process.

Which immigrants are you talking about, because most of us citizens are immigrants except for indigenous Native Americans and African Americans who were brought here as slaves (as opposed to immigrant Africans and those who come from the Caribbean)?

See, I was right, you no doubt have tenure also. The only reason there is a “pathway to citizenship” drive is Dems want the voters and large businesses want the cheap labor.

And what about the mother who is here illegally from the Democratic Republic of Congo and has a female baby while here? You do know that sending she and her child (a US citizen) back almost guarantees a future of rape for both of them, right? How is it possibly Christlike to do so? Making generalizations about illegal immigrants leads to all sorts of moral gaffes.
Do you really think the USA can take all the possible rape victims from around the world?

Heavily fining those who employ illegal aliens he’s the most cost effective, non-confrontational solution to the problem. No need for detention centers, immigration hearings, dragnets, roundups, etc. The professional protester crowd won’t even know where to go to throw there public tantrums.
This is what I have suggested for years. Go into a restaurant and if found to have illegals washing dishes, the investigator closes the restaurant right then and there.

Go to a construction site and it found to have illegals working. Close the site. Make it clear that hiring an illegal will get you business closed down.

Now to H1B’s and business that needs H1B’s needs to pay a min of $100,000 per visa. Every year on the first they can write a check to the government. Its been proven over and over and over that H1B’s are hired at the expense of americans.

India needs to improve its economy instead of exporting their jobless to the USA. Countries south of the border need to improve their economy instead of sending us their social problems.

My point is that most people that support open borders are in no danger of losing their jobs due to immigration. But go out to corporate america where Americans are being laid off only to be replaced to H1B holders.

My wife is in the top 5% of what she does. Yet she has been laid off 3 times in the past 7 years and replaced with a lower skilled, lower paid H1B worker.

The very people that support open boarders also support higher wages. You can not increase the supply of workers and expect wages to go up. That is unless you force, by law, higher wages.

Back when I was growing up, the middle class was the fastest growing part of the church. Back then the Bishops cared about the middle class. Today the fastest growing part of the church is the poor illegals, surprise now the Bishops cares more about them than the middle class.

Trump is saying things that resonate with the middle class.

Middle class america has been taking it on the chin since the 70’s. Its time middle class america be heard again.

Well, then tell me why Planned Parenthood had ads targeting Romney over abortion if Romney is such a friend to the abortion industry?

washingtonpost.com/blogs/virginia-politics/post/ad-targets-romney-on-abortion-planned-parenthood/2012/07/07/gJQABnDUTW_blog.html

Yeah, “gotta run” alright.

Now, if one is going to compare the world of 2012 as pre-ISIS and pre-Ukraine and the like, obviously, we would be in better shape with Romney, let alone, Romney contends he has always been pro-traditional marriage. You are taking conservative talking points to put Romney down when again, he has his side of the story as well.

Yes; I think Romney is like Trump, both way better for life, for the country than Democrats. Touche.

Romney did not legislate gay marriage, he left the bill on the table, something like that because he thought it was futile to take it to the Massachusetts Supreme Court.

For all of this talk, attacking Romney, let’s see:

Gov. Rick Perry, defund Planned Parenthood.
Gov. Scott Walker, defund Planned Parenthood, signed Ultra-sound bill.

And the list goes on, Governor Christie, and clinics were shut down in these states.
It is a mystery to me why so many overlooked this issue in 2012. It cost the GOP the election.
brookings.edu/~/media/research/files/papers/2012/5/15%20romney%20lds%20chingos/chingoshenderson%20mormon%20paper%20final.pdf

I think we have a disconnect here somewhere (intentional or not I can’t really tell and don’t really care.) I support Christie / Rubio / Walker. I don’t support Trump (but should clarify that I would probably vote for him if I had to). I don’t support the Democrats. Take the illiterate wrath elsewhere.

Slate:

I certainly wouldn’t have a problem with an e-verify program.
But getting rid of birthright citizenship is a non-starter since that would require amending the 14th Amendment.
The plan to seize remittances going to Mexico is simply despicable. That money represents workers’ wages (documented or not) and the US has no right to it.
The 14th Amendment doesn’t grant “birthright citizenship”.

Trump’s a joke. He says he will round up every undocumented immigrant including their children who were born in America, children who in many cases know no other homeland and in many cases might not have even been outside the US, and uprooting entire families from their lives and deporting them. Some of these families may even be sitting in our churches pews. But then as he deems “the good ones” could be expedited back into the US. LOL what a colossal waste of time and resources. Trump is nothing more than hot air playing to the Republican primary electorate. He is entertaining this liberal though. I’d never vote for the guy but getting a lot of laughs from his show. It would be funnier if what he is proposing wasn’t so sad.
