Ok, I’m not thinking.
I’ve been tangently involved in the prolife movement for over 11 years. I have never heard anyone in the prolife movement call for criminal prosecution of those who have had abortions. Prosecution of doctors yes. Not of women.
Why shouldn’t women who have their babies killed be charged with a crime if they procure an illegal abortion?

I think the father should be part of the picture too, not just the woman.

The punishment has to fit the crime, too. Depending on the circumstance, the form of punishment can vary.

I’m shocked to see that a conversation like this can’t even hit the ground without people pulling their hair out.
No one is pulling their hair out. Maybe stop with the hyperbole?

Admit that he made this statement without having consulted with any main stream pro life organizations. It isnt an argument that is used.

What is his intention, to show how distant he is from the actual pro life movement? He’s convinced me since his praise of Planned Parenthood.

So there is no argument except trump is not part of the group that you know. No argument except distrust of him.

I think that they were wrong and that Mr. Trump is correct. Just as a woman is punished if she murders her sister, so should she be punished if she murders her unborn child.
You are correct, of course, and if abortion is ever outlawed, this is exactly what will happen. My personal experience has been that most people who identify as and work in the pro-life movement cannot allow themselves to admit that if abortion is outlawed, women who seek one will go to jail for murder. To admit this would make their already intrusive positions even more unpalatable to men and women across the country.

I’m no fan of Trump, but he’s just saying what many think but are too appalled to say out loud. Per usual for Trump, I’d say.

I’m sorry, I should have put a question mark at the end to show I was asking this rhetorically. Of course we should have penalties for murder and that includes abortion.

Well, now he’s changed his mind…
“If Congress were to pass legislation making abortion illegal and the federal courts upheld this legislation, or any state were permitted to ban abortion under state and federal law, the doctor or any other person performing this illegal act upon a woman would be held legally responsible, not the woman,” Trump said in the revised statement. "The woman is a victim in this case as is the life in her womb.

I think much of Trump’s popularity rests on what you’ve delineated, LS. He comes right out and says what other people only think. (That was why Joan Rivers was so popular as a comedian, and partly why she was so disliked by some.) Trump says what many people think, but whether those people believe their (sometimes) outlandish beliefs should actually be put into practice remains to be seen.

Which is makes no sense for if not for the woman seeking the abortion, the doctor wouldn’t have a customer to perform on.

Its the penalty provision of such a law, which will prevent all previable abortions from ever being outlawed.

They could never get such a law through Congress

The Inept Thing Donald Trump Said About Women Who Have Abortions is Making Pro-Lifers Cringe

Yes! Isn’t this incredible. :bigyikes: Just gets better and better.

Interesting piece about the new subdued tone appearing in comments by prominent Trump media supporters. I myself have noticed this as well. My theory is they are starting to catch on that this Trump ride is not going to end well…to put it mildly. The revolution that never came. Now what.

I don’t like this. The woman should be responsible as well as the doctor performing the abortion.

Maybe trump did go home and consult with some pro-lifers.
Trump knows that a law banning all previable abortions will never make it through Congress anyway.

He’s merely throwing meat to pro-lifers.

He was asked a question for goodness sake. The media tries a thousand traps. If you don’t believe that, try run for president yourself.

:nope: Have you ever gone there with a committed pro-lifer?

Don’t - would be my advice. (I have.)

The first thing I thought when I saw the comment was Trump has never tangled with a prolifer and he is definitely not a Catholic or he would know better, he would have been down that road by now.

If Mr. Trump wins the presidency, then I would assume that the Republicans will hold both houses of Congress. They should be able to pass a law punishing women for abortions if they are truly a pro-life party.

So the media isn’t suppose to ask questions ?

It wasn’t a trap, it was a direct question on what his position on abortion was.

BTW, it was asked by Chris Mathews who presented the same question to Bishop Tobin of RI, after he made public that Patrick Kennedy should not receive Holy Communion.

Mathews asked Bishop Tobin, if he had it in his power, would he write a law to ban all abortions? The Bishop answered “yes.” Mathews then asked what the penalty portion would be? Bishop Tobin tapped dance around the question then finally said he didn’t have the expertise in law to know. Mathews then said, you don’t have the expertise to answer question, yet you’re telling a member of Congress what to do. The interview was over.

They’ll never do it, which is the point.

Republicans and Democrats will not pass a law with a penalty that punishes the woman nor the doctor.

Its the reality of politics which we as Catholics have to begin to understand.

Remember, George Bush was a Republican president with a Republican controlled Congress.

They never sought to outlaw all abortions.
