Even military troops can be removed by the next President.

He needs to build The Wall.

At least American troops would be protecting their own borders, not thousands of miles away protecting someone else’s.

Maybe he can quarter them on people’s ranches and in their homes next.

Whelp, since we’re down there, let’s annex Mexico :mexico:
Yikes! Why would we want to?

But of perhaps some interest, several decades ago there was a movement on the part of some of the northern Mexican states to secede and become part of the U.S. Monterrey was, I believe, the center of the movement, being the industrial center of mexico at the time. But I don’t think the U.S. government exhibited the least bit of interest, and the movement faded.

Actually the use of the military to enforce US laws within the US is forbidden under law. All they would be allowed to do is gather information and pass it on to the civil law enforcement authorities.

The Posse Comitatus Act of 1878 prohibits the use of U.S. military forces to perform the tasks of civilian law enforcement such as arrest, apprehension, interrogation, and detention unless explicitly authorized by Congress.

The Posse Comitatus Act does not apply to the Army National Guard and the Air National Guard when acting in a law enforcement capacity within its own state when ordered by the governor of that state or in an adjacent state if invited by that state’s governor.

However if the National Guard is brought under the control of the President (for example when they were sent to Iraq) then the Posse Comitatus Act applies to them as well.

It looks like Trump has mouthed off as usual without having any clue as to whether what he wants done can actually be done.

I fully support using the military to enforce our southern border. There is nothing moral about illegal border crossing, drug smuggling, human trafficking or illegal guns/money transfers.

Perhaps, following Thistle, an appropriate fist step i would be to change the laws so that such an action its legal. I hope that before this law is changed, there is some thought and discussion about unintended consequences.

Perhaps another first step would be to realize other presidents have sent troops to the border, both Obama and GW Bush have done it. Yes they were National Guard but the Nation Guard is part of the Military and its members are still “troops”. You choose to make the assumption that the current president and his advisers are not aware of or don’t care about the Posse Comitatus Act and are proposing illegal acts. Sure, that fits your narrative for Trump but unfortunately it does not conform to the reality of the situation.

I have to wonder about this. A group of foreigners declares that they are going to illegally cross our border in order to violate laws here and the military can’t stop them? Good thing the defenders of Midway didn’t think so.

I find the lack of empathy here sickening people. We are ALL God’s children and the people of Mexico happen to be our literal NEIGHBORS. It’s time to look beyond our borders and realize we must always help those in need and welcome them with open arms. Build bridges not walls as the Pope himself said.

What law would they have violated???
Murder. Manslaughter. Mayhem. Property destruction. Arson. Might be others. Well, there would also be assault. Also assault with intent to kill. Assault with a dangerous instrumentality.

You do understand, don’t you, that these people are not Mexicans and that Mexico won’t ordinarily let them into Mexico unless they’re going through to the U.S.?

Either the armed forces can legally defend the borders against foreign intrusion or they can’t.

Those things would not be the determinants, otherwise it’s an endless quibble over how many foreigners, what kinds of weapons, the facial expressions and words spoken. The question is whether the armed forces are prevented from guarding the borders against in wrongful incursion of all foreigners of all kinds or not.

The argument above, apparently, is that the foreigners’ intentions in breaching the border are what matter. Do they intend only crimes that amount to fraud (fake ID, etc) or must their intent be violent?
