Trump Will Withhold $200 Million in Tax Dollars From California for Forcing Christians to Fund Abortions

STEVEN ERTELT DEC 16, 2020 | 4:16PM WASHINGTON, DC

President Donald Trump will withhold $200 million in Medicaid funds from the state of California because of its policy essentially forcing Christians to fund abortions.

California requires private health insurance plans pay for abortions. The requirement essentially forces churches and Christian groups that are pro-life to fund killing babies in abortions in their health care plans.

Churches across California have been battling the onerous abortion mandate for years with no relief. The troubling situation began in 2014 when the California Department of Managed Health Care reclassified abortion as a “basic health service” under the Affordable Care Act and ordered all insurance plans in the state to begin covering elective abortions immediately. Even churches are not exempt.

Unconscionable.

Why is he only targeting California?

There are six states that require private insurance to fund abortions

California
New York
Washington
Oregon
Illinois
Maine

In my opinion if he wants to make a policy like this then it needs to be applied equally.
Otherwise it just looks like he’s just targeting one state.

The Trump administration said Wednesday it was cutting $200 million in federal healthcare funding to California because the state requires insurance providers to cover abortions.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services said it will withhold the funding from Medicaid in the new fiscal quarter starting in January and “if the state does not come into compliance” the department will cut an additional $200 million per fiscal quarter.
he administration warned California earlier this year that it could lose federal funding over a 2014 regulation mandating that employers and private insurance plans pay for abortions.

The Department of Health and Human Services determined that the state was violating a federal antidiscrimination law, known as the Weldon Amendment, that protects insurers from being forced to provide abortion coverage, the department said in a statement.

HHS Secretary Alex Azar said in the statement that California had violated federal conscience laws and refused to take corrective action. “So we are now taking action to hold them to account,” he said.

T> he Office of Civil Rights, a division of the Health and Human Services department, initially investigated California based on complaints filed by a Catholic order of religious sisters and a nonprofit Christian church that objected to “paying for elective abortion insurance for themselves and their colleagues,” the statement said.

The incoming administration of President-elect Joe Biden could reverse the decision. Biden has nominated California’s attorney general, Xavier Becerra, a supporter of abortion rights, to head the Health and Human Services agency.

Give it time. Detractors will soon opine that this is actually wrong, or not good enough.

@camoderator, can this be combined with the original posting of this story?

Because he holds grudges and uses his powers as president to attack.
It’s not quite that simple. It isn’t just about mandated abortion coverage, but the Weldon amendment. CA does not have a conscience exception to mandated abortion coverage. I don’t know about the other states, but WA does. So this really is about a violate of the Weldon amendment, not picking on CA, and not holding grudges.

This is very bad news for the poor people, who rely on Medicaid…
It would be easy for CA to fix this: allow conscience exceptions. But they don’t. They’d rather sacrifice funds for Medicaid in order to force the Guadalupanas Sisters and Skyline Wesleyan Church to provide plans with abortion.

Don’t pin this on the Trump administration. CA was warned (from the letter):
First, California was put on notice of the burdens imposed by the Mandate Letters by
complaints filed with OCR and through long-running lawsuits over these issues filed by private
entities (including the Complainants in this matter). Lawsuits are strong and explicit requests for
relief, yet the State has refused to provide any relief at all in response to the litigation.
CA chose to force its extreme pro-abortion position knowing it might lead to this kind of action.

This has been ongoing. This action by the HHS was begun well before the election. And it is principled, not an act of spite. It just happened to come out now.

Biden will reverse all of his lame duck dumb decisions. I can wait for that.

Then I weep for those countries, that they’d be so willing to consider millions of babies being thrown away as inconveniences to be just part of life.

Hopefully, they’ll come around someday.

Abortion is legal in CA. Trump is just trying to “stir it up”. Biden will reverse all of his stupid decisions. I can wait.

He’d better be careful, or a conservative will be reversing all of his in 4 years from now.

Besides, the Supreme Court is locked down nice n’ tight. Nobody’s going to get anything through that’s too regressive for a while to come.
