Let me start, cause it will come up,
the man is pro choice, not pro life.
He supports abortion for innocent babies that are conceived through rape and incest.

I thought differently for a long to
ime and feel deceived.

That’s less important than the fact that he is the only President to reduce the money supply to Planned Parenthood.

A president who is in favour of abortion in extreme cases is MUCH preferable to one who is in favour of abortion on tap. It’s a qualitative difference.

It is not a grey area in my book, not an either / or, .
A baby being aborted is not a qualitative difference.

I think he really tried to gain the vote for all conservatives by using the Church in his favor but from his decisions he has made he does not appear to be a true Christian to me.

There is a qualitative difference between someone who thinks that abortion is an unfortunate medical necessity and some who thinks its an essential accessory to the modern lifestyle. Both are wrong but one is much worse than the other. It’s like the difference between a crime passionelle and serial murder.

In addition there is a quantitative difference, probably a multiplication of 50.

I’d say the multiplication factor is far higher.

Pro life and Pro choice are concepts along a continuum rather than absolutes. One could say that in some way Catholics are pro choice because they choose the life of the mother over the life of the baby.

Thinking of it as a continuum, Trump is definitely on the Pro life side. To be sure not in step with the Catholic church but certainly on the same side of the argument.

He is hardly consistent with most Catholic social teaching. Sure, he is anti-abortion, but that is a far cry from being pro-life. He is the paradigm of the hypocrisy claimed by Democrats of being for protecting life up until the time it draws its own breath.

Face it, the vast majority of Republicans are in favor of the rape/incest exception. It is here to stay. The pro-life movement never should have accepted the exception, because once we began passing laws that purported to prohibit abortion, they were full of holes, and the holes just keep getting bigger.

I can stand up and say it is not good enough, I dont accept it. I am Catholic. I follow what the Magisterium says and am obedient and submissive to its teaching. In all areas. Does the Magisterium have exceptions that support the abortion of a baby?

I would be such a hypocrite if I did and started polishing his halo based on other ‘achievements’.

He is not anti abortion given his exceptions.
abortion is an unfortunate medical necessity
Why should the baby of a rape be an unfortunate medical necessity?

Same with his death penalty policy / opinion

Lets , as Catholics, quit being apologetic about any exceptions.

It appears the majority of Catholics do not see it so narrowly, including this one:

“I have never understood the expression non-negotiable values. Values are values, and that is it. I can’t say that, of the fingers of a hand, there is one less useful than the rest. Whereby I do not understand in what sense there may be negotiable values.” - Pope Francis.

In any case, if the question is why most Catholics do not support Trump, well, there is the answer. He does not support most Catholic values.

Negotiable values are such things as how to administer capital punishment, or prudential steps on dealing with climate change, or whether to permit reception of Holy Communion in the hand. Those are negotiable.

That is your prerogative. You can in good conscience vote for a third party, given that this is an all or nothing issue to you.

Most of the strongest anti-Trump posters on here are Biden supporters, which it appears you are not given your stance. The position of “he isn’t against 100% of abortions” is seemingly used as justification to vote for Biden by a number, but at least you are consistent.

America is a big country with a large population, Surely there are younger candidates that would be suitable leaders. I say younger as I really believe a President needs a bit of vitality and has no question marks over the full extent of their faculties. As we age we start losing those precious brain cells, and genius aside , we slow down.

I am not an anti Trump poster, I am a pro policy that would align with my Catholic life. Perhaps we Catholics, as a rebellious minority ( in respect to secular norms) need a rebellious minority politician /party to support and throw money at.

If Biden is pro choice he is no better in my book.

Its like this, as an example, if I post a thread on medjigorge It would be immediately flagged into smithereens and shut down by the moderators because this is a Catholic site obedient and submissive to its Archdiocese and the Magisterium.

That clariry of catholic values should be stepped into real life too. IMHO

That’s brilliant!

It reminds me of the following conversation between Margaret Thatcher and the ultra-right Enoch Powell:

Thatcher, (beaming with self appreciation): “Enoch, what do you think of my defence of Victorian Values?”
Powell (coldly): “Margaret, values can neither be defended nor attacked. They exist in a transcendent state by themselves.”

Kidnapping isn’t a negotiable value. Kidnapping is always wrong. That’s what happened to the children and babies of migrants seeking asylum. The children were taken and then in many cases not returned, even after the parents were deported.

The article says Trump has had 60% support, that’s good. The headline does not match the editorialized title above.

I’m sure it will get back up there.

As usual, one makes distinctions between Catholics who regularly attend Mass vs. those who don’t.
