Trump's Catholic support...or lack thereof

Some Catholics have long argued that only abortion matters and that regardless of a candidate’s character, his wrong and immoral positions on other issues, or anything else, votes must be based only on the candidates’ relative positions on abortion. Other Catholics have long wondered just how far down that path the single issue voters were willing to go. Trump is testing that limit, and many Catholics cannot hold their nose any longer.

You really need to educate yourself on this. A good start would be the websites for NARAL and National Right to Life. That will tell you whose record is prolife and whose is pro-abortion.
Pro abortion = acceptance of any abortion, its that simple.
No ifs buts maybes legalese
I am still a thief if I only steal one of your diamonds and leave you the other.

Also more pre existing health challenges.
I would tend to agree, though I can’t prove it at this point. We are told that people who are immunocompromised are very susceptible to being killed by the coronovirus. What happens to a person with, e.g., HIV or Lupus in Uganda? Probably such a person dies young of the underlying disease. In the U.S. such a person would be kept alive pharmacologically, but he/she would still be immunocompromised.

But if you only approve of stealing diamonds, but never steal one, you’re not a thief. Again, Trump has done nothing to promote abortion regardless of the cause of the pregnancy.

What, exactly, are you talking about? What in actual fact has Trump done that harms you, your family, or anyone you know? He gave you a tax reduction. He didn’t start any wars. His economy was unprecedented until Covid hit, and it might be right back where it was by November. He takes the part of the U.S. internationally and particularly with respect to the unfavorable trade with China. He has acted prolife in every way, and promoted it.

What’s the complaint, really? A personality thing? He was not elected as your beer buddy, but as president of the U.S. Nor was he elected archbishop.

The final straw for me was when he called the city of Baltimore a series of unkind words I can’t repeat here because he was having a feud with Elijah Cummings. I thought, wow this guy is despicable and beyond contempt - I never thought in my lifetime I would see an American president insult a major American city using cuss words.

(But for others it could be the way he encouraged his supporters at a rally to chant ‘send them home’ about four minority congresswoman, or the time he mused about injecting bleach or UV rays into the body to combat coronavirus, or the time he insinuated a cable host murdered his aide, or the time he called the virus a Democrat hoax. Or the time he retweeted a Candace Owens video calling George Floyd a thug - in the middle of the most widespread unrest since 1968. Or the time he said there were good people on both sides of the Charlottesville white supremacy riot. To name a few instances.)

Do any of these things hurt me personally? Probably not but that doesn’t change the fact that there’s no shortage of outrageous behavior he’s been responsible for. It doesn’t have to hurt one personally to outrage, or be despicable.

Saying ‘what could one possibly have against this guy’ after three years of this behavior at this point begins to look almost like gaslighting.

Don’t let the perfect be the enemy of the possible as they say. Half a loaf of bread is better than none at all.

We see in some states, the abortion laws are even running amok with all of this talk with abortions on the day of birth, late term abortions, some even citing infanticide. But to each their own.

Don’t know when you were born, but other presidents have said worse, and a lot more often. Trump himself didn’t call Baltimore a s…hole. He re-tweeted a brit commentator who said that. He, himself, called it a “violent” place, which it indisputably is. Look up Lyndon Johnson’s use of “jumbo” if you want to see some real vulgarity.

Look up JFK’s explanation for when he had migraines. And he overtly had affairs while in office.
And of course Clinton’s escapades are well known.
But you go ballistic because Trump retweeted a cuss word.

Ha! That was Scarbrough himself. He shouldn’t have said it. Trump merely repeated him.

Rather than go through all of your personality objections to Trump, you have answered the really important question. He has done nothing to harm you. On the contrary, he has done much to help you by helping the country and the prolife cause (if you believe in it).

No new wars. Stock market at all time highs (even now 9,000 points ahead of when he was elected) tax relief. Correcting trade imbalances. High employment, particularly for those on the low end of the income scale, as well as blacks and Hispanics.

But he repeated a tweet in which a guy said a bad word. My, my. As poor a reason to support abortion as I have ever seen.

The area we differ is where I say it is not good enough for me that a leader is pro choice where his exceptions are concerned, those being rape and incest. Those babies are ok to abort in his world. That is not acceptable to me.
So on a scale of 0-10 on being pro-life, Trump is about an 8 because he wants to stop all abortions except for cases of incest and rape, and he (I believe) supports the death penalty.

Meanwhile Biden is at zero because he wants abortion on demand up until birth.

We do not vote for perfect men. Just the least imperfect.

LBJ was a failure as a president. He won the 1964 presidential election, but in 1968 for reelection he did not even receive the democratic nomination as a sitting president from his own party, he had a 36 percent approval rating, and the Democrats lost the presidency to Richard Nixon.

Edit: Sorry, I quoted the wrong part of your post. Don’t know how to fix it. But, frequently I do see LBJ pulled out in comparison to Trump. He did not have a good run for reelection

Some even paying for abortions which before were forbidden by the Hyde Amendment. This will only lead to increased number of abortions. But heck Trump is prolife so everything is okay.

I don’t know if LBJ could have won re election or not. He was certainly vilified by the anti-war movement and by segregationists. But he probably would have received his party’s nomination. He just basically gave it up, and largely because of the unpopularity of the Vietnam war,

I don’t remember any presidents in a public forum insulting American cities, states or their residents. (I was born in 1968.) As far as I know, It’s an entirely new phenomenon and it’s limited to Trump (because he was upset that Cummings was conducting oversight on his border wall). And I hope when he leaves office, we won’t see it again.

Trump said ‘As proven last week during a Congressional tour, the border is clean, efficient & well run, just very crowded. Cumming district is a disgusting, rat and rodent infested mess. If he spent more time in Baltimore, maybe he could help clean up this very dangerous and filthy place.’

Then he added: ‘Why is so much money sent to the Elijah Cummings district when it is considered the worst run and most dangerous anywhere in the United States. No human being would want to live there. Where is all this money going? How much is stolen? Investigate this corrupt mess immediately!’

I’m not from Baltimore, but it is the largest city in my native state, and I feel the need to defend its honor from anyone that would impugn it with base motives. So I will quote from the Sage of Baltimore, H.L. Mencken, who said with astonishing prescience ‘as democracy is perfected, the office represents more and more closely, the inner soul of the people. We move toward a lofty ideal. On some great and glorious day, the plain folks of the land will reach their hearts’ content, and the White House will be adorned with a downright moron.’

And lo, so it came to pass.

As for all the petty nastiness you ascribe to him
Yes, lying is nasty business. Being a person devoid of integrity is one thing I will disqualify as a candidate for dogcatcher.
This is the second time you’ve suggested I’m lying.
Not you, Trump, you know, the topic of the thread. Did you really not understand that? Wow.

Not on either count. The plain folks are not content and the White House will not be adorned with a moron unless Biden wins.

Sorry you’re offended that Trump said harsh truths about Baltimore. But Baltimore is a terribly run city. So is the City of St. Louis City, but we in this state are free to say it because it’s the truth.

He did not run
This isn’t true. He initially ran for reelection, barely winning the New Hampshire democratic primary against Mccarthy. He withdrew his reelection campaign on March 31 1968. His polls showing very poor numbers through other battleground states.
