It will be interesting to see if the judges appointed for there non-activist stance will become activist in order to side with the president that appointed them.
That is pretty much what this whole situation boils down to.

But the law does state that the Treasury Department shall supply them upon request by that committee,
And has Congress requested that the the Tresury Dept provide them, or are they just brow beating the President to voluntarily provide them? I think it’s the latter since there is no requirement for Congress to provide a legal reason, nor would the President’s privacy be protected if he provided them as opposed to the Treasury Dept providing them.

Considering he’s banked quite a lot of political capital based on the fact that he’s a wizard businessman who was going to bring that acumen to the White House to cut better deals, the pretty strong evidence now that he in fact reported business losses of over a billion dollars in a ten year period, it suggests that his business skills were, well, significantly overstated.
Considering that Trump actually wrote a book about that period in his life, I’d say the evidence is pretty overwhelming that he lost a lot of money during the NY real estate crash of the 1990s, and then made it all back, and more, through shrewd negotiating and marketing, which is the part you guys like to conveniently forget…

In the 2000’s, Trump sued a pithy comedian for saying something about (it had to do with an orangutan) his father.

Trump provided his birth certificate to the court’s…(True Story, lol) as proof he was not as the comedian had insinuated…The judge threw the case out.

Point being, D. Trump (if we know nothing else about him) does not like to loose, and will do almost anything to prove he’s on top in the game of one-upmanship. But, he won’t release his taxes which could be the proverbial slap in the face to his nay-sayers proving he is not the biggest looser.

I’m no rocket scientist, but I’ve got a good hunch why.

Except that Trump has admitted, in countless places that he lost billions during the NY real estate crash. He wrote a book about it. The loss and his comeback are a big part of his story.

Let me guess…does it rhyme with “Shootin’”?

quite a few persons lost homes, real estate and money, but not year after year and 8 years out of 10 …… Most business savvy persons were able to see the light at the end of the tunnel much sooner than that…😅…

I’m sure you saw the light at the end of the tunnel, rebuilt your multi-billion dollar empire, and then when on to win the Presidency despite none of the smart set giving you a chance much sooner than Trump did…

The enterprise must be huge… (sorry to use that word) in what was one of the largest cities of the world… we aren’t talking about the corner ice cream shop here, a printing shop, a newsstand.

Losing money is easy. Gaining it back isn’t. Let’s say, for example, if Trump’s investments took a 30% loss in, say, three years running, but let’s say his return on equity was 12% (which is quite high) it would take him seven years to make up for the losses. He would end up not paying taxes for those seven years.

But let’s say that during the three bad years he was unusually forward-looking and invested even more in the real estate market. He would then get accelerated depreciation on some elements of the investment and extend his loss carry-forwards even more.

I don’t know that that’s what happened to Trump. But neither does anybody else in this thread.

Puhleeze guys, can we at least acknowledge that yes, although there was a real estate bubble not all moguls lost money? If he would have invested says Forbes, his 1 dollar would have been worth 40 by the end of 2014…

It’s not as if he’s lumped in with all other business geniuses.’ I’ll agree with one thing, he’s a category all his own. (wink)

So we hear this from the auto-producing state (wink).

Perhaps, there were many workers who braved this time period as well and they kept their jobs.

Paging Lee Iacocca, please pick up the courtesy phone. Why don’t we go back to his elementary days next.

I am not and was never a “mogul” but I certainly lost my shirt in the early and mid 1980s. And I sure wasn’t the only one who did. I made it all back and much more.

I don’t see why it’s so hard for people to believe how bad it really was. And I dont’ see why people don’t understand how dramatic a turnaround can be from the depths of a recession.

The roaring '80s, isn’t that what it was called and in a place like NYC?

That’s got to be some shot, to put down Trump among “business geniuses” (wink) and all of that. Millions of people in the US go bankrupt and yet, we are talking about things 35 years ago. Some business models may even use bankruptcy as part of their business plan if it isn’t illegal. The government encourages business or at least, it does at times.

I had a home under water, and owed much more than it was worth (mentioned before on the forum)….but I wasn’t at a loss for several years thereafter…!~

I think we’re probably at an impasse here, because you just don’t believe it’s possible to have tax losses for years without being a terrible businessman. It’s entirely possible, even common.

Who says Mr Trump did? We haven’t seen any tax returns for this century. Maybe he is still losing money according to those.
