And in Psalm 118 it clearly says “It is better to trust in the LORD than to have confidence in man.” Why? Because God isn’t as man. He doesn’t deceive and He doesn’t equivocate.

Sure, trust in God. But, we are also prone to our feebleness of being human. So we err in judgement when we do trust Him. Saint Peter promised to be by Christ’s side during the Passion, but didn’t.

The exact reason why Peter failed was because he trusted in himself. “Even if everyone deserts You, I will not.”

He also began to walk on water, but then sank. Because no matter what faith we have, it’s prone to our human condition. So thus must grace prevail. As Saint Thomas Aquinas wrote, “Sensuem Defectui, Fides Supplementum.” Faith supplements where our sense fail. Our faith is in God, but through/in Jesus Christ His Son, in the Sacraments.

You don’t think his fear had something to do with his faith? Jesus did say, “ye of little faith.” That was Jesus said when Saint Peter sank. No?

Why do you think I said “He quit looking at Jesus?”

As I stated, Peter’s problem was a lack of faith in Jesus and faith in himself.

Scripture says,

“Trust in the Lord with all thine heart, and lean not unto thine own understanding.”

-Proverbs

We ought not to place absolute trust in humans because they are prone to letting us down but some amount of trust in persons in diverse array of relationship is necessary. Obviously, trust needs to be doled out with prudence and discretion.

His senses steered him away from Christ. Sure. But I think that was my point. That, his faith fell on his senses. But again, Christ is tangible. The Lord stood on water, which they thought was a ghost.

And I think that’s the danger when we over spiritualize our faith. For Christ is present/tangible/real, not a ghost or spirit. He is tangible. And that presence we know exists, by His Word which we trust, in which He is present in the Blessed Sacrament.

Needless to say, you would have to trust the men who put together Scripture, and through all the Latin Translations, having preserved, them through thousands of years, to be true. So you have on some level and layer of existence trust Jesus chose Twelve Apostle’s. And certainly signs were apparently shown, and carried further by the Apostel’s Successor’s, as well as the Father’s of the Church.

With men, whom God appointed through Jesus Christ His Son, we believe.

So you have to trust men who carry on everything Jesus instructed to be true. Thus, while our hope and trust is in God and Jesus, there is faith upon the men who serve at Mass, the Priest’s, the Bishops’s, and Our Holy Father. So thus do we trust, hope, and pray.

The second chapter of the Gospel of John also is instructive to our life’s journey…

Now when he was in Jerusalem at the Passover Feast, many believed in his name when they saw the signs that he was doing. 24 But Jesus on his part did not entrust himself to them, because he knew all people 25 and needed no one to bear witness about man, for he himself knew what was in man.

People are way too inconsistent and imperfect to put their trust in. Instead of trusting people, one should trust God.
I believe God gave us the Saints to trust in ,Our Lady formost to trust in .These wonderful people trusted other people as God intended ?

I trust in Christ, so when He said this:
(Luk 10:16 KJV) He that heareth you heareth me; and he that despiseth you despiseth me; and he that despiseth me despiseth him that sent me.

I need to trust in Christ and His Church and the men that are ordained in His Church, in Faith and Morals.

But in the context when I don’t trust myself either, I trust entirely in God, love for thy neighbor does not imply necessarily trust in him or her either.

Agathon, Of course it is better to trust in God than in Man. Of course Jesus is God with two distinct natures, one being human - man.

Those who saw Christ in person 2,000 years ago saw only the man. They did not, could not, know He was God. Peter was the first to figure it out and Christ acknowledged that Peter could only reach that understanding by the grace of His Father, so He put Peter in charge.

I think many of us get confused a bit. Trust is not an “either or” choice - either trust God OR trust man - can’t have it both ways. One or the other. If that is our only choice, then of course, we should choose to trust God, not man. The Old Testament, the Gospels, and the New Testament give us ample reason to Trust God, not man.

But God works with us THROUGH man. I agree with post 30 and 31 by JamalChristophr and Boy Genius.

I also strongly reject the leadership of certain men such as Hitler, Stalin, Mao Tse Tung and others who strongly rejected God.

FInally I would say that Christ calls us to the 2 great commandments of LOVE. Trust is a major element of LOVE. We are called to love others, to trust others. With prudence.

Exactly. We are to owe NOTHING to anyone except to love one another. And we especially don’t owe them the confidence we should place in God alone.
