Try post 52
Please try it yourself. Please also demonstrate, by quoting my words, that I have said that the US has accomplished a “rampant imperialist” foreign policy in Diego Garcia. Instead of trying to put words in my mouth.

walstan:
As I said YOUR definition.
The point is, walstan, that I have not given a definition. For you to insinuate that I have is a less than friendly gesture.

walstan:
Ask the people from Diego Garcia if THEY think it isn’t imperialism.
Please ask them yourself. And let us know the result of your research.

walstan:
p.s And before you “fire off” about being off topic, look at the opening post:
I did. In its entirety.
40.png
walstan:
The conjecture is that that may have been because of the impression of American imperialism. Off topic? Only if you can’t cope with the answers.
It’s off topic. And there is no need for discourtesy.

The topic was about the growing awareness of an ordinary American about the military and about him offering his restaurant for a re-enlistment ceremony. Did you even go to the links and relinks? Yes or no. If you had, you would not be persisting in dragging this discussion off topic.

Amazing how many words you need for the one word: “Ignorance” - No, I do not “hate” America. Do you know me? Are you in my head?

By me, simply, analysing America’s foreign policy, you ignorantly brand me a racist? Well done! And from your words, with the EXACT same logic, I shall now simply brand you ignorant. 🙂

One reason I’m critical (Not hate filled.) of America’s policy, is the simple fact that you ignorantly call those who oppose the Iraq War “American Haters”, or those, in your country, non patriotic this that or the other. While on the other hand, you have those who call the people who support the Iraq War equally offensive names (I believe I have heard the term “Nazi” being used quite liberally by the “other” side).

But hey, calling me a racist will surely get me to see your views, and certainly supporting the Iraq War!
Where were you called a racist? I read all the posts in this thread and I can’t find where anyone called you a racist. What is the difference between hating America and hating our policies? By your posts it is easy to see that you hate our foreign policy. I assume that you post what is in you head so yes, we can say some of what is in your head. I would bet that if you were in fact called a racist without any provication and proof the person who did so would be suspended and maybe banned.

vern humphrey:
I know that you accused me of “ignorantly branding you as a racist” – and have failed to post any quote of mine to back up that accusation.
In the absence of providing a quote to back up his accusation, then I guess he joins the list of folks who are conceding points today. 🙂

I think there is some flaming going on. I fail to see any connection between the growing list of unsupported accusations and the topic of the original post. This is the third time I am bringing this up.

You are right. I am very proud of that restaurant and what the owner did. I got off topic but I hate to see people claim racism where there is none. I will try to keep my post on the topic.

Lance this discussion was off-topic long before you arrived. My request to return to the topic was directed at Balance and walstan. Hopefully they will respond to the original post and the link.

again, you can find this out for yourself. in Iraq, and in New Orleans, many contracts for rebuildiong and restructuring were given to relatives, friends of the Bush administration. smacks of something like imperialsim.
Or maybe they just give contracts to those companies who have the capacity to rebuild torn areas. Guess who rebuilt Western Europe and Japan after WWII? Guess who rebuilt Kosovo in the 90s? HALIBURTON.
you don’t have to actually take over a nation to be imperialistic. you just have to try to, I don’t know, control its oil reserves and give contracts for restructuring to your friends in big business?
Hmm, and how much oil is America getting from Iraq? Less than 2%. The greatest source of oil for America is America itself. The second is Canada, supplying 25% of our oil. And we sure as heck don’t control Canada more than we control Iraq.

Claims of economic imperialism in regards to Iraq/oil are really unfounded. If we really are “imperializing” that nation, why is Iraq, as a part of OPEC, voting to increse oil prices if the United States would obviosuly not want that? Where’s the imperialist stranglehold on Iraqi oil? Why are we only getting less than 2% of our oil from there?

Darn tootin. We’re uncontrollable. :tiphat:

Philip P:
I’d kinda like to get America out of America’s rampant imperialism…😉

Look again at the first post, and ask yourselves if it’s really a good thing when Americans are so divided against each other that they speak of each other as “*** turbo jerks.” Imperialism’s bad for national health and character.
Would you prefer if we used sugar coated words instead of blunt-easy-to-understand words that don’t get mistaken? What happened to freedom of expression? Oh yeah… as long as you subscribe to moral relativism, it’s ok to voice your dissenting opinion and express whatever you want… but if we disagree and use strong words, we’re evil, immoral, wrong, stupid, immature.

And the good ol’ USofA has never been Imperialistic… Isolationist, yes… but never Imperialistic. 😛

It’s not the words in themselves, but rather the words as a symptom I’m pointing to. Do you think it’s a good thing that Americans have such a low opinion of one another that they feel such language is the only way to convey their feelings? Read through these forums, listen to some talk radio, watch a few talk shows – accusations of fascism, communism, treason, anti-americanism, comparisons to Hitler and Pol Pot and Stalin – are these good signs of our national character, in your opinion?

War corrupts freedom, democracy, and national character. This is about more than just Iraq - it’s about the way my country has embraced what President Eisenhower warned us about - the military-industrial complex - and the deleterious effects that has had.

Our massive military spending did not stop 9/11. War won’t keep us safe. Let us follow George Washington’s advice and stand down our enormous military entanglements.

You are right that it did not stop 9/11, however it has stopped untold other attacks on us. The Clinton era policies are the cause of 9/11. We had 9/11 because they thought we were weak and would do nothing in return to them. Just as we did nothing about the USS Cole, the attacks on our embassies, the attacks on our troops in their barracks or the murder of our citizens while on a cruse.

Untold attacks, huh? Please tell. I’d like to hear how our tanks stopped the terrorists. Or maybe it was our fighter jets. Or was it all that money we spend on missile defense? How about all those bombs we’ve been dropping in Baghdad?

No - good police work stops attacks. You don’t need a military larger than all of NATO combined to stop terrorism. I’ll take the NYPD over the 101st airborne, thank you very much.

I would have expected no less. Your lack of expertise in these matters is well known.http://forums.catholic-questions.org/images/icons/icon12.gif

The NYPD? That bastion of safety. How many murders were their in New York last year? How many rapes, muggings, robberies, home invasions, etc. To answer one of my questions there were 540 murders in NYC and the number of Americans killed in Iraq, which is a war zone, was 702. Looks like NYC should be declared a war zone. I think the NYPD has their hands full trying to control their own citizens. Maybe the NYPD could use a little help from my old unit, The First Air Cav. I disagree that only police work stops attacks. The Islamofacist terrorists must believe we will hunt them down and bring them to justice and even kill them if necessary.

There are those who believe political correctness will solve any problem – no expertise or hard work needed.http://forums.catholic-questions.org/images/icons/icon10.gif

Do you think you should ask the Iraqi military to come and advise NYCPD? I hear the Iraqi military are making progress and doing fairly well. A bit of nipping and tucking still to go. But encouraging.

In New York, the police protect everyone regardless of nationality. Apparently, though, we only count American deaths in Iraq.

540 people murdered in a city of 8,000,000. Yeah, I feel pretty safe. Shall we ask the average resident of Baghdad how safe she feels?
