Actually, I don’t live in N MN. I live in the Twin Cities where there are all sorts of odd names coming from every ethnic background. Apparently, you know nothing about this part of the world, so it might be best if you didn’t comment on it. I have been to N MN and I know what I’m talking about. It’s trucks and fishing country up there, not an urban setting in which almost anything goes. If you don’t believe me, go there sometime and you’ll see what I mean.

Being ugly and saying the things you said is uncalled for. I am not from MN, but I did grow up in a rural part of the south and I don’t appreciate you lumping rural people in to “backwoods hicks” and “bigots and zenophobes.” Just because a part of the world or country would think certain names are different and odd doesn’t mean that they are what you assume they are.
We know a beautiful young lady named Carleigh Rose. My niece is Lydia Rose.Well, we are trying to decide on a name for our newest little one that is on the way. My 3 year old desperately wants to name the baby “Alligatorie”, which I am a firm ‘no’ on.
Personally, I don’t like giving my children an official name until I see their little face! I don’t want to risk my parents getting attached to a name, so I don’t plan on sharing with my family or friends the names that we are considering. So what better place than a lovely, relatively anonymous forum like this one?
So here are the names we have in the running.
-Louisa Corrine - (My mom’s middle name is Louise, my Mother-in-law’s name is Corrine)
-Theresa Rose - (After Saint Therese, and my due date is the feast of St. Rose of Lima)
-Cora Louise (Cora as a shortening of ‘Corrine’, and Louise after my mom’s middle name)
What are your thoughts? Which do you like best? And I am of course open to suggestions! We like to stick with old fashioned names the most.

No, she said that he’d be “teased unmercifully on the playground.” That is what kids do. My name is Kendra and I was teased. My mother didn’t run and yell at parents because their child made fun of me over my name. I would be more embarrassed if my mother tattled and it could possibly make it worse since the kids would not only make fun of my name, but also make fun of me for having my mother fight my battles. I liked the fact that I was the only one in my school with my name and once I was older than 7 it wasn’t a problem anymore.

I am sorry this thread took a slight turn toward mud slinging; I suppose it is important to always remember that names-- both those of our children and those we are sometimes called by others–can be sensitive in nature.
Now if you want to talk about a name that would get her picked on… my husband is a huge Lord Of The Rings fan. He wants to name her Golodrial.
There aren’t “millions of people” in northern Minnesota, and she specifically said that because they are German Protestants, they reject non-German Protestants out of hand. That is xenophobia. And if it’s bad enough to warrant fear against giving your child the name of a Catholic saint, then it must rise to more than simple teasing and it must go beyond childhood. You say it wasn’t a problem after age 7; she must not feel that way about northern Minnesota because that’s hardly an issue in naming your child.

I’ve named cats after characters in Lord of the Rings–the male hobbit characters. Galadriel is very pretty, but like Esmerelda, it is a bit unusual these days. Although, you never know, with the current popularity of Tolkien, we might see quite a few Galadriels, Arwens, and Eowens pop up. We named our newest kitten Rosie after Rosie Cotton, the love and wife of Samwise Gamgee. He named one of his daughters Eleanor after a flower of Lothlorien. Eleanor is also one of those sweet older names that might find a revival as have Amelia and Olivia.See, shows what I know! And I promise not to take the name. It’s still on the market.
