Tucson, Ariz., diocese shuns retired Mich. Bishop Gumbleton

WOOD-TV

TUCSON, Ariz. – The Catholic Diocese of Tucson won’t allow a retired auxiliary bishop from Detroit to speak on church property because the group hosting his visit takes positions contrary to church doctrine.

Tucson Bishop Gerald F. Kicanas said he’s written to the Rev. Thomas J. Gumbleton, an outspoken advocate for sexual abuse victims and gays and lesbians, and told him that his visit to speak to the Tucson chapter of the Call to Action group can’t be sanctioned by the church.

Call to Action is a group of lay Catholics that seeks changes in church doctrine on gays, lesbians and priestly celibacy, and has urged more democratic processes in the church, including election of bishops.

Thank God for Tuscon. Amen !!
And of course, we could ask
why Bishop Gumbleton hasn’t been
excommunicated by his superiors,
but that’s probably a trifle.

I have always held that Bishop Gumbleton was deserving of promotion to his own See

McMurdo Station, Antartica usually came to mind.

Good

He should retire to a private life, and all who wish to be saved themselves should pray for his conversion.

😃

Until I got to the last line, I thought you’d lost your mind! :rotfl:

While I applaud this action, the headline (msnbc’s not yours) is misleading. CTA is banned from holding meetings on Church property in many diocese because of their dissident positions. It seems that the diocese of Tucson was “shunning” CTA, not the retired Auxillary Bishop. The fact that Bishop Kicanas wrote to Bishop Gumbleton personnaly sounds like it was as a curtesey.

How did AZ get such a high percentage of the “good guys”? 😃

And of course, we could ask
why a public heretic like Gumbleton
Has the Church accused him of being a public heretic? If not, tell me what position you hold in the Curia to make such a scurrilous accusation.
hasn’t been excommunicated by his superiors,
As a bishop, his “superior” is the Pope. Why don’t you document all his “public heresy” and run down the corridor to the Pope’s office and present your documentation to Benedict?

Exactly so. Bishop Kicanas has no brief against his brother bishop, but cannot allow him to address that organization on church property. Were the bishop there to address the Holy Name Society in some parish, the Ordinary wouldn’t have forbidden such.

I’m a bit surprised at this comment. I didn’t think Bishop Kicanas had a reputation for being one of the “good guys” among conservative Catholics. Remember the row that flared up when pro-abortion governor Janet Napolitano was allowed to speak in a Catholic church?

People see what they want to see. A bishop somewhere (not Kicanas to be sure) could be supporting a mistress, but if he upholds some of the laity on certain issues, there won’t be any fuss from them about it.

It might be more accurate to say the “the Ordinary might not have forbidden such.” There’s always hope. 😉

Exactly what do you have against the folks at McMurdo Station? I would think they have enough issues with their research in such a hostile environment!! 😃

I simply thought that some additional hot air would be well recieved there.

And the penguins could be some good inspiration for the bishop, particularly in proof that yes, God DID make somethings black and white.

You’re right. Kicanis is perceived as something of a “liberal Chicago priest.” I think that explains his action, actually. He heard that the bishop wanted to speak in support of CTA. Nobody is in favor of the way Chicago Transit Authority operates!

Ahh…good to see your still slamming him in retirement…touching.

Reminder: Public figures, including politicians and hierarchy, are to be afforded the same respect you would show another poster. Non-conforming posts have been edited or removed. Charity above all, folks.

Yes, I think both bishops deserve credit for doing the right thing.

It does appear that Bp. Gumbleton chose not to create any unneeded acrimony with Bp. Kicanas over this issue.

Again, it appears that it was more about Bp. Gumbleton appearing before CTA than Bp. Gumbleton appearing in the Diocese of Tucson.

Update on this.
Bishop Olmstead (Phoenix) also stepped in to say “no” to Gumbleton.
In the Arizona Republic today www.azcentral.com it was reported that Gumbleton will speak “on video” at selected churches in AZ.
Won’t be at mine, I know!
