It is great to see someone sing so well.
It is nice to see someone who can’t sing but try their best.
It is kinda sad to see someone who thinks he sings so well, but fails the contest and when he goes outside he says bad to the judges.

I watch American Idol every season but usually watch regularly when they get to Hollywood.

I love this show.

I think it has done wonders to encourage correct singing.

I work with children’s music and theater programs, and just wish to say to parents that if your children are interested in singing as a career, PLEASE get them involved with choral groups in which correct singing techniques, music theory, and sight-singing is taught. DO NOT allow them to learn music by listening to rock music or popular music.

Once they have learned to sing correctly, then they can apply their knowledge and skill to rock, pop, country, etc.

I attended an audition last week with 79 children/teens. Whenever one of the kids sang a CCM piece (Christian contemporary music), I wanted to jump up and scream at the parents. Without exception, all of the CCM auditioners had terrible pitch problems, intonation problems, breathing, and other technical problems that frankly, I don’t know are fixable at this point. It will take years of expensive vocal coaching to untrain these poor children and teenagers.

Tell them that all of the good musicians in all genres learn music the hard way, by studying the basics of good singing and music theory.

Years ago a James Dobson pamphlet was published, written by a music teacher. He advised a timeline in which littles ones under age 2 are not allowed to listen to any music except a monophonic voice (one voice or instrument at a time, and of course, this would EXCLUDE classical music). When a child turns 2, they can listen to two voices (e.g., piano and one singer, or two singers, etc.) When they turn 5, they can listen to polyphonic music, but it should have a STRONG melody line. Only when they are older should they be exposed to rock music.

Think it’s unrealistic? I followed his advice with my children. One of my daughters works as the production stage manager with a professional ballet company (reads orchestral scores–one of the reasons she got the job). The other is a soprano and frequent soloist in her college’s select choir and opera group.

They both love all kinds of music, including rock and country. But they both KNOW how to sing.

It CAN be done. Please do it!

I only start watching when they get to Hollywood. I cant stand the idiot portion with people looking for their 15 minutes

That’s interesting. That seems a bit extreme, but I don’t know anything about singing (other than that I can’t, at least well anyways!). My children are both grown so it wouldn’t apply to me, but I’m curious as to how many of the people who do read orchestral scores like your daughter and how many of the other soloists in your other daughter’s select choir followed this same path?

By the way, I don’t care for American Idol. I don’t oppose the idea, I just don’t like how the judges AND the contestants go out of their way to be rude.

Peace

Tim

The three judges are especially mean spirited, hateful, and dehumanizing in their treatment of the contestants. Everyone who watches their antics is becoming a little less forgiving, a little more hardened, and a little more jaded in their feelings and their actions towards their fellow man.
Poor treatment of our fellow man has unfortunately become the norm.

I wish I could get my wife to stop watching this trashy spectacle. I think its another pathetic example of the degeneration of our culture. Its exploitation of emotionally immature hopefuls. Its promotes the worst kind of misplaced glorification of self. I think its hypocritical for Christians to find entertainment in the public humiliation of the contestants, and the emotional brutality inflicted on them by the losers on the panel, especially the Brit whose only talent is being nasty.

If it were a simple talent show, without the public humilations, I’d probably have no problem with it.

I take American Idol as an opportunity to teach my children. They see the bad behavior of the judges - they see the delusions of fame in the contestants. I can point out the bad points and good points of they behavior - and challenge my kids to act beyond those bad behaviors portrayed in the show.

As a singer myself - and raising potential musicians (band musicians) - I also am able to give them pointers and lessons on studying music, getting the basics, and the lessons of being prepared when going to an audition such as this.

Im a HUGE fan of the show.Ive never missed an episode in my life. Although I think that the judges are a bit harsh to the contestants at times in the first couple episodes, it is merely for entertainment. Its the contestants’ fault that they are making themselves look absolutely ridiculous. The judges are only stating the obvious. Either that the people are horrible singers or that they look odd. In the later stages of the show, I dont find anything wrong with it.

We watch it as a family and when someone who is odd looking is on sometimes my youngest makes a comment. It is a good time to remind them that how someone looks is unimportant. It gives a good opportunity to talk about the variety of people one may meet.

I have also brought up that all of us are blessed with gifts … some want singing to be one of them but it is obvious that many do not have this.

Instead of teaching them to be more intolerant of others we have tried to make them more tolerant … it shows how words can hurt others.

It all comes down on how you can discuss things that they see on TV. I am sure if they just watched the show with their friends the results could be different.

This show allows for some serious discussion on real subjects. This is not theroretical discussions we have but real ones on real people.

Plus we all like it and I like to see how people progress on the show.

I think that much of the show is a front. The show pretends to be a competition, at this point, based on judging. But what it really is is a front for making fun of people at any cost.

The three celebrity judges thoroughly enjoy poking fun at people at any cost. Contestant’s weight, height, level of attractiveness, intelligence is all on the table for mockery.

The thrill of watching it is much the same as the thrill of the bully in the school playground. The attitudes of the three judges is as non-Christian as is possible. (IMO)
