TV programs that are OKAY for Catholics to watch

Even adverts are salacious now.

The BBC doesn’t have commercial adverts but will advertise adult programs earlier in the evening so there is no escape.

As an adult, I really don’t see the big deal. Just watch whatever you want to watch. If watching shows with immoral character is going to bring you to sin, then you have much worse to worry about. If you watch a show and you feel uncomfortable then just stop. If there are immoral things done but you know it’s just make believe and it doesn’t influence you at all, then what’s the big deal?

Obviously when it comes to children there’s a difference as their views on life are still evolving.

At least that’s my view of it.
I agree with that! 🙂

As I have said a few times around this part of the forum I think it’s best to keep an open mind while not letting yourself be delivered into sin.

For television shows it is obvious by my username that I am a Doctor Who fan. I also like Downton Abbey or anything that’s British. I also like Game of Thrones. I also like numerous TV shows that I have no space to mention.

But for my spiritual sustenance or when I want to enhance my faith and relationship with God, I go to EWTN. I have been watching EWTN since I was a kid, and the channel helped my develop my strong faith which I have now. God bless EWTN!

EWTN is okay but somehow is not the same since Mother Angelica is no longer involved.🤷

I use my own judgement when deciding what programs to watch. I avoid anything that is smutty or violent. I prefer to watch documentaries and some movies – but I’m very careful about what I chose.

I don’t know if anyone has mentioned “The Artful Detective” on Ovation. No sleaze. The hero is a straight-up, openly Catholic detective. It’s set in the late 19th or early 20th Century in Toronto. Among the interesting aspects of it are the expositions of forensic science, forensic medicine, and the casual introduction of historical characters like Niccola Tesla, Jack London and Harry Houdini. One gets introduced to things like the Boer War (Canadians too fought in it) and the visit of Queen Victoria to Canada. It’s a bit like “Young Indiana Jones” was in that way. Lots of history woven in.

It’s just about the only show my wife and I watch. For some reason, the DVDs (which one can buy) are entitled “The Murdoch Mysteries”. Our 14-year-old granddaughter is absolutely in love with those shows, so we bought her some of the DVDs because they can’t get Ovation on their very basic TV setup. Her parents are very strict in what they let their kids watch, but “The Murdoch Mysteries” are A-okay with them.
I like that show, too. It’s actually called Murdoch Mysteries. I have no idea why y’all south of the 49th would call it “The Artful Detective”. 🤷

'Course, I also have no idea why you changed the name of Harry Potter’s first book from “Philosopher’s Stone” to “Sorceror’s Stone”. 😛

Shows I like:
Blue Bloods – I really like Danny and his relationship with his wife and kids, altho’ my favourite partner of his was played by Jennifer Esposito. Haven’t watched it in a while, though.
WKRP in Cincinnati. I soooo crushed on Bailey back then. 😊 I liked the fact that Arthur was clueless, dopey, kind of a wuss…except when the chips were down, and a question of doing the Right Thing arose.
Barney Miller. The most accurate portrayal of the life of a cop, as claimed by actual cops.
Colditz.
Hogan’s Heroes. I liked the fact that all the Nazis were idiots, played by Jews, many of whom had first-hand experience of the Holocaust.
Perfect Strangers. Now we do the dance of joy!
Happy Days, in its early years, when it was actually a late-50s slice-of-life show – before it literally jumped the shark.
*Combat! *I actually liked the black-and-white episodes, because they reminded me of actual WWII footage.
Babylon 5.
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea.
The Prisoner
. Except for the last episode. :whacky:
*The Bob Newhart Show.
The Mary Tyler Moore Show.
*I’ll think of more later. I have laundry to fold.

I rather like The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet; I own every episode put on DVD, and many of the radio programs as well. Yes, they’re that old. Ozzie and Harriet are so family-strong they’re the archetype when people want to refer to 1950s-style nuclear homes.

One of my favorite shows for spiritual reasons is Little Mosque on the Prairie, which is about a small Muslim community in Canada, who share space with an Anglican church. To be sure, Islam is not Catholicism, or even Christianity, but at least half the characters are very serious about morality, while the others are more ‘cultural Muslims’, or cultural Anglicans. The show is exceptionally family friendly; modest dress is the norm, harsh language is marginalized, salacious activities are out of the picture. One of the main characters for the first three seasons was a kindly Anglican priest who was even a mentor-figure to the central character, a young lawyer-turned-imam named Amaar, so there’s the occasional interfaith dialogue. This is a Canadian show that has finished its run; I watched most of the episodes on YouTube before collecting them on DVD.

I don’t watch TV, but if a show looks promising from what I see of it online, and I can find a cheap used set online, I’ll try it out. 🙂
