Since when does one evil negate that of another? You’re free to post on abortion if you wish, but please do not tread on my post on starvation!
You started it Robert. Are you aware that mental illness shootings and violence has become an epidemic here in America? I think you really need to see this episode of CBS’s 60 minutes from last week. The topic of this thread is a very serious problem! 😦

Sounds like another case of poorly managed mental illness so far.
👍 yes!

We’re not handling mental illness here in America at all, and we’re forbidden from doing anything until someone either goes on a killing spree or gets themselves killed. The prison system has become the modern day psychiatric treatment center -merely confining the mentally ill only after they have harmed others… Absolutely no resources are a available to protect us until after the deed is done…

I’m sympathetic to the poor quality of mental health care here in America, and believe me, I’m a victim too! But I think things need to be placed into their proper perspective. We’re talking about one women dead (a relatively quick and painless) versus more than 9,500 innocent children who died today of starvation (slow and very painful deaths)! When was the last time 60 Minutes devoted ANY TIME WHATSOEVER to the epidemic of starving children in the world? Get the picture?

If you want to talk about starving children, then that’s fine. Just don’t do it here. This is the place where we talk about the mentally ill.

Just putting the potential news stories into proper perspective. This is the World News Forum, is it not?

No. This is a thread. You can start your own thread within the World News forum if you want to talk about your issue. Otherwise, stick to the topic here and watch the video I provided for you.

But the starvation of innocent children, although a crime against humanity, is largely censored by the mass media. This was my only option to put it into proper perspective.

Meanwhile, more than 9,500 innocent child will die of starvation today. The pain and suffering of these children is senseless, and easily preventable. Which is more of a news worthy article!?!
How many little girls and boys were aborted today? What’s senseless is the mindless culture of death. Choose to live, choose to breath everyday, even if it takes every ounce of willpower you can draw upon. 🤷

You seriously don’t see your hypocrisy here, do you? 😛

Let’s see if I can help. A thread is started about a crazy person who put a lot of people in danger.

You post a different evil in an attempt to negate that evil…treading on a thread about a different evil.

Someone else brings up abortion.

You chastise them, saying one evil doesn’t negate another and accusing them of treading on your off-topic post that is treading on someone else’s thread.

This is the News section of the forum. I believe the way it works is that you post a thread about a current news item with a link to that news item. Do you have a news item about the 9500 children who starved to death? A link?

News accounts portray her as a productive caring person, and a good mom, but suffering from postpartum depression. Praying for all of those personally involved in this tragic situation.

Hope we never become desensitized and apathetic to the unnatural events that we are witnessing. We have to do better for people who are are suffering from unseen wounds.

Praying especially for the child in the car and the injured officer…

:gopray2:
…and all others affected.

Praying for the repose of the deceased woman’s soul, and the other officers injured as well (and Gary & Robert’s concerns too :))…

Well, its a good point, and one which seems to be a common bond with many of these incidents. I imagine her mental heath history will be know soon also. We sweep everything under the mental health carpet which doesn’t seem “normal” though.

You know, someone walks in the Navy Yard with a shotgun, or the elementary school in Newtown, or attempts to drive a vehicle up the front steps of the White House with a 1-yo in the car…not “normal”.

There’s a lot of depressed individuals out here. Its also a very realistic part of life which we have been treating in one way or another as long as I can remember. When those self depreciating thoughts get the best of you and you start thinking about acting off those feelings or do, its a good time to ask for help, verbalize what’s going with you.

I think Joni Mitchell put it well a very long time ago, “It seems we all live so close to that line and so far from satisfaction” In other words we also have to realize what it is common to us as humans and not unique to us as an individual also. And then deal with it in a healthy productive manner. I’m pretty sure we all get depressed out here. What’s different is how we as individuals deal with it, and to what magnitude this occurs.

I recommend, Church, prayer, family, good friends, honest self-communication, support, plenty of exercise, lots of fresh air, changing from the trauma and bad news channel to the comedy station as to remember how to laugh. And it doesn’t hurt to read and understand yourself either. What I wouldn’t do is start swallowing every pill, every doctor recommends. In other words the holistic approach “first”.

You make a good point though, one has to wonder how exclusive this is to the USA today. kelvinf is pretty sharp, perhaps some elaboration from an outside perspective would help focus.

And one would think in a city that is the “capital of the free world” would be the model in showing us how to deal with mental illness and crime…
Seriously folks, drive to DC some time and avoid the Capital and the monuments, just drive around the city. And be aware we are the richest nation in the world…

To get back on topic, the person in question was a woman named Miriam Carey, 34-years-old, from Stamford, Connecticut. She had a history of mental illness including postpartum depression.

According to her boyfriend and father of her child she left a note saying she thought President Obama had Stamford under lockdown and her house under surveillance. She drove to Washington but it is not known what she planned to do once she got there.

She did not have a gun in her car and police were unaware of the child being in the car when they opened fire.

The incident does not appear to be terrorism nor was it motivated by the current government shutdown.

While driving around remember it has been run by democrats for decades with budgets that other cities could only dream about having.
