U. S. Catholic Schools Worried New Health Care Plan Will Be Their Doom

To highlight an important part of the article:
He says schools in the Denver archdiocese will likely qualify for the religious exemption from the law because it is a predominately religious employer.
No worries, at least with the school. 👍

““I find it breathtaking. I find it an unprecedented power grab by the federal government the likes of which our culture has never seen,” Martin said.”

The closing blow-off by the local Democratic Party rep was totally ignorant or deceptive (you choose). Almost all catholic dioceses are self-insured (usually with re-insurance for especially bad years that use up the premium pool). In other words, they ARE the insurance company. It’s no help at all.

And I doubt that catholic schools will mostly be eligible for the ‘religious exemption.’ As I understand it, those are for institutions that exclusively employ and serve people of the particular fiath community. Most catholic schools don’t require the PE, math, art and music teachers (for example) to actually be catholic. Nor do they turn away prospective non-catholic students (presuming there is room for parish kids first).

This issue isn’t getting enough media attention. People should be made aware that Obama is potentially going to shut down catholic schools in America with this HHS mandate. You’d think taxpayers might be interested to hear that 2.1 million kids currently being educated tax-free might suddenly flood the public school system, which spends on the order of $12,000 per student. Might taxpayers not want to hear that Obama may be unwittingly adding 15 BILLION dollars annually to the burden of local school district tax obligations. But he’s only going to raise taxes on the rich. Right.

Under the HHS mandate, only the HHS gets to decide who is religious enough to get a religious exemption!

And HHS has defined religion quite narrowly. It includes houses of worship, but not schools, charitable organizations, Catholic hospitals, even orders of nuns who do social work in a community or provide food or shelter to non-Catholics.

In other words, if you actually follow Jesus’ teaching by engaging in the corporal works of mercy, you’re not exercising your religion according to the HHS mandate, and thus have to provide for things which violate your religion.

Parish schools will be exempt.

Diocesans schools will be exempt.

Private Catholic Schools will most likely not be exempt, but they already provide private health insurance to their employees, and those insurance companies have had contraception, and abortion in their policies anyway.

None of the private Catholic schools in Massachusetts have closed because of Romney Care which has the same mandates as Obama Care.

Sorry, but that is false. I worked for a private Catholic school, and when we were examining insurance compainies, we turned down the ones that offered contraception and abortion.

And if like here under Romney Care, the insruance companies will offer three packages.

Single insured.

Single + one

Family plan, not specified number of dependents.

All three will have the price tag according to out of pocket expense and deductables.

There won’t have ala cart options of which coverage you want and don’t want. They are bundled packages with a price tag.

So the bottom line is, tell your employees that it’s a moral evil for them to use artificial birth control.

Fact is, if the insurance companies were to removed the option on birth control, your premiums would not go down, but might possibly go up. It’s cheaper for the insurance company to pay for contraception than it is for pregnancy and child birth.

As I stated before, we have Romney Care, and the Catholic Schools and dioceses are purchasing health insurance from private insurance companies, with the contraception and even abortion coverage in the packages.

Jim, open your eyes. If MA exempted catholic schools, it was because their chief executive was INCLINED to exempt them as allowed in the areas open to executive interpretation. You really think Obama is going to interpret HHS that way? No chance. Examples: CRS thrown out of government contracts for refugees because they refused to provide/refer for abortions. Same principle at work.

And you still appear to be willfully ignorant of the implications of SELF insurance used by almost all dioceses in which the diocese absolutely has the ability to dictate the plan coverage offered, even if the plan is administered by Aetna or one of the other biggies.

Stop offering Obama defenses that don’t address the issue. They frankly sound like campaign commercials.

Don’t confuse them with facts…it just makes them angrier. 😃

Romney tried to exempt the mandate, vetod that part of the bill However, the 83% democratic legislature over rode his veto.

As it is, Catholic Schools, nor the dioceses are exempted.

They all purchase private health insurance for their employees, as packages, just as corporations and individuals like myself purchase.

Excuse me, but I know better than you what my school’s insurance covered and what it did not cover.

What did cover and what is going to change are two different things.

Hope you understand.

I understand the difference, but you made a blanket statement that is false. You did say, “Private Catholic Schools will most likely not be exempt, but they already provide private health insurance to their employees, and those insurance companies have had contraception, and abortion in their policies anyway.” (post 6, emphasis mine)

I’m waiting for you to acknowledge that just isn’t so. I assume you have the integrity to correct yourself.

This is true. Most Catholic schools use private health insurance companies to cover their employees. Those companies provide coverage for contraception and even abortion. However, institutions like Catholic schools can remove that coverage.

Those are the days of purchasing health insurance ala cart, that is going away, and Obama care had nothing to do with it. Ala cart coverage is too expensive for most insurance company customers to purchase so they’re forcing packages they have designed, only now, the government is defining what they can not exclude.

So, even if the government were to give all institutions, the exemption not to have those coverages in their policies, the companies they’re buying from, would still provide it for customers who have no problem with it. In fact, it may even be that the insurance companies would increase the cost for institutions who opt out of contraception coverage.

BTW, I’m leaving the forum, so don’t expect an answer to any replies after this.

You don’t have to reply but I hope you understand why I could not just stand by while someone insinuated that private Catholic schools are cooperating with evil.

Incorrect assertion. Most catholic dioceses have established self-insurance in which the diocese ITSELF becomes the insurance company. The dioceses typically allow parishes, diocesan employees and diocesan school employees to participate in this self insurance pool. Many to most dioceses DO utilize the services of a health insurance company to ADMINISTER their self-insurance and this practice has not declined at all in recent years. When you hire a company to administer YOUR self insurance pool you absolutely have the ability to dictate coverages (within the limits of the law).

Glad to hear you will not be spreading more incorrect information here, but wish you’d just face up to it instead of leaving.

I find it astounding that Obama will get the majority Catholic vote when he is the most pro-death president we have ever had.

What is wrong with Catholics. Cafeteria Catholics for sure.
