he also says Embryology is a lie. Embryology is what shows us the development of the human person during the early stages of life after conception.

As for whar he said about Big Bang theory, also…this is my take: God said BANG and the Universe began.

I feel that Evolution denies the purpose of human beings…it says we don’t have a purpose here on Earth when it fact WE DO. If we are nothing more than “evolved apes” what does that say? It doesn’t say anything nice! I am made in the image of God, not an ape!

I’m guessing he doesn’t have a good argument against it rather than an emotionally based rejection.

Try this on for size. God, for His reasons, allowed the apes to evolve. At the proper time (Adam and Eve), He infused them with souls.

First, I do not agree with the Congressman’s point of view on the issue. I respect his right to believe it, but I don’t agree.

Having said that, I ask myself this: why in the world is the Los Angeles Times running a story? This paper, headquartered out of Southern California, running a story on a Congressweenie from Georgia. Doesn’t make sense? Why should people in Southern California care what he thinks?

Are you serious? They’re running it because the Congressman is a REPUBLICAN and it just goes to prove their unspoken but implied belief that ALL Republicans are Neanderthals who hate science and believe in stupid things.

Yeah, but if I just come out and quote the last half of the article, that would take all the fun out if it, wouldn’t it?

And there couldn’t be any relationship between that article and this one that appears in the LA Times’ sister publication, the Washington Post:

In Missouri, clergy in the fray of Akin race, seeing it as start of a ‘battle for the soul’ of GOP

Nearly 400 Missouri pastors gathered at the podium of a hotel ballroom recently to pray over the kneeling figure of Rep. Todd Akin, a Senate candidate whose campaign had been pronounced dead by national Republican leaders weeks before.

Akin’s political revival has become a cause celebre for this group of clerics and other conservatives, who have launched a carefully orchestrated effort to lift the GOP candidate back into contention for a seat that could help decide control of the Senate.

“People are drawn to Akin’s cause because they see it as the opening battle for the soul of the Republican Party,” said strategist David Lane, who has spent months in the state organizing pastors to fight for Akin, at times bucking the wishes of GOP leaders in Washington. Akin’s campaign, Lane said, represents the fight against establishment politicians, their consultants and “a morally flawed approach to politics.”
Nah, just a coincidence. Strictly.

No big fan of country club Republicans, TBH.

(BTW, I consider Romney a true conservative)

After reading the article this thread is about, I read several articles about Catholicism and evolution and some seem to be confusing me about our Church and the Pope’s position on it. Does the Church allow belief in evolution?

Yes.

Im not descrediting the theory, but I dont like it either…

From the linked article:

*Evolution, embryology and the Big Bang theory are major underpinnings of mainstream science. And Georgia Republican Rep. Paul Broun, a physician who sits on the House Science, Space and Technology Committee, says they are “lies straight from the pit of hell.”

Let me expand on that a bit:

The Church teaches that God created heaven and earth.

But, with that understanding, we are not required to believe in “creationism” in the mold of protestant fundamentalists (a strict seven 24 hour period creation timeframe, etc.)

Read CCC 282-301

That’s ridiculous. We liberals know that not all Republicans are Neanderthals: some are Cro-Magnon.

Such things are a matter of science, not of faith. People are allowed to believe, or disbelieve, in evolution, within certain guidelines. Namely, God created everything from nothing and Adam and Eve are the progenitors of the human race who committed original sin.

Yes. Catholics have supported evolution as compatible with our faith since Pope Pius wrote the encyclical Humani Generis which was written in 1950. To put it simply we believe God created a geo sphere, then God created the biosphere then he created man. We believe man has been constantly ascending ultimately to return to God. Most important thing to take away is that man is God’s most precious creation because we are made in God’s image and he has given us souls.

Dumb question, but what is a geosphere and bioshpere? And man is ascending…in what way?
