U2's Bono and Pope discuss Irish sexual abuse crisis

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - Bono, frontman for Irish rock band U2, met Pope Francis on Wednesday and said afterwards he is an extraordinary man who is sincere in his pain over a sexual abuse crisis in Ireland.

Bono and the pope spoke for more than 30 minutes at a meeting to team up the rock star’s ONE organization, a global campaign and advocacy organization that aims to end extreme poverty, with a papal group named Scholas Occurrentes, which helps foster cooperation among schools worldwide.

“Having just come from Ireland, inevitably, we talked about his (being) aghast about what has happened in the Church,” Bono told reporters afterwards.

Bono was in Eastern Europe just over the weekend, or so. I don’t know that much about him, he seems to have a good heart.

I don’t understand how Pope Francis can use the silent treatment and remains passive aggressive in his homilies against Catholics, yet he often communicates with non Catholics about the same issues
or he will have private conversations that are leaked to the media.
 
Sorry to say, I did not know that about Bono. Well, the Holy Father has appeared to get along with others, I"m not always in favor of and I will leave it at that.
 
I liked the first half-dozen or so U2 records, but that was in spite of Bono’s carryings on. I’ll never forget the time I went to some Congressman’s office and he had framed photos on the wall of himself shaking hands with various notables. With the President…with Pope John Paul II…with some other world leaders of the time…and of course, with Bono. We all busted out laughing at Bono being included in a wall display next to the Pope and world leaders. That man needs to just shut up and sit down. I think he invented virtue signaling.

Ah, good ol’ Bono. I can’t think of a better champion of the poor than a rock star who is filthy rich and avoids paying his taxes.

I am not defending Bono’s position on everything, but when it comes to third world poverty issues, he has been a longtime advocate. He has never just been a celebrity wanting “a cause” for publicity. He has always understood the issues and advocated strongly for them. He had multiple meetings with St JP II. He has, for a longtime, trued to make a difference.

Full disclosure: have honestly never been much of a U2 fan

From the Reuters article: “We have to re-think the wild beast that is capitalism. Although it is not immoral, it is amoral and it requires our instruction and he (the pope) is very keen on that,” Bono said.

Bono, net worth $700,000,000.
 
To be fair, isn’t Bono a celebrity advocate who has brought a lot of awareness to foreign aid issues that have wider implications, impacting thousands if not possibly millions? In a way, isn’t he like Princess Diana in bringing pressing issues on the front stage, issues that could benefit from increased awareness?
 
“Celebrity advocates” for “awareness” are highly suspect. Most people do not need a celebrity to tell them there is an issue going on in the world, especially now that we have the Internet and aren’t dependent on 3 news networks and a local paper.

It is fine if celebs want to contribute money, appear at fundraisers, or talk in the course of their work about some cause or charity they think is important. Virtually every celeb does this and it’s often a cause in which they personally have an interest, like their kid or their family member has the medical condition involved or their home town is involved.

Bono has gone well beyond a normal celebrity’s activities and seems to be positioning himself as some sort of international jet set diplomat, and capitalizing on that image. If he really wanted to help, he would go help, more quietly. He is the musical celebrity equivalent of a guy who prays on the street corner in order to be seen. There have been other celebs who were similarly show-offy and annoying with their “causes” like Madonna and Michael Stipe, but Bono is the king of them all. He has become a joke among everyone who ever seriously listened to his music.

Yep. It would not be right to insinuate that Bono knew anything, but if Cardinal Ted was an old friend, I’d rather Bono just take a back seat with his “activism” and “speaking out” on this. I’m sure he has plenty of other causes to worry about.

We will have to agree to disagree, quite strongly. Most celebrities pick a cause and do a couple of fundraisers and try to get some publicity. Bono has spent years working rather hard at lobbying and actually making a difference. Do some research and see his awards for humanitarian efforts. They are quite extensive and they are just given out to him due to showing off. Yes, he uses his celebrity status to open doors to politicians. But they will all tell you, he is dead serious, extremely knowledgable on the issues, etc.

Now, I don’t support all he does, but you portrayal is pretty much exactly backwards. FWIW, and you will probably take exception to this also, there is one other celebrity who uses his status is a vey positive way and really tries to make a difference, and that is George Clooney.

Why Pope Francis met with Bono? What was discussed?

Cardinal DiNardo requested the Vatican assist in an investigation into Cardinal McCarrick. Perhaps Bono is taking it to the church and helping Pope Francis with the investigation into his old friend?

I’d agree, he’s dead serious…on the issue of abortion…pun intended!

He uses his celebrity influence with politicians, as witnessed in the Repeal the 8th Referendum in Ireland in May of this year, to repeal a child’s right to live.
