Two videos showing the victims of Berkut special police sniper fire when many innocent civilians died, and when protestors bearing no weapons on them, just plain kids with makeshift shields defended themselves to hold their positions. You can clearly tell, even if you don’t speak Ukrainian, that these people were not some paramilitaries but unarmed kids with no knowledge of how to engage militarily.

PLEASE BE WARNED, if you watch these videos you will see Ukrainian civilians dying in front of your eyes from Berkut sniper fire which Yanukovych authorized, or see protestors being fatally wounded, wounded, or attempted at being resuscitated by the medical help that was available, which medical help claims it was also shot at by Berkut. It is truly horrific to watch. The people being shot by snipers have no weapons on them, only makeshift shields, and in the second video you see the dead peaceful protestors wounded or killed by Berkut: civilians, older people.

These people were fighting for a better future and against a tyrant who resorted to lethal force. I believe people on this thread should see these videos to see what the protestors were up against. A government which shoots at its own people even though at this time, the Berkut riot police were not under any threat.

That’s funny, but I did not see any Berkut snipers in that video.

We must be very careful before we lay blame without all the facts and based on an ambiguous video. It may have just as well been Right Sector firing on the protesters in order to blame Yanukovych.

But Yanukovych was perfectly within his rights to use lethal force against violent protesters who did nothing but thrown molotov cocktails at and commit other crimes against the Ukrainian Police. In fact, initially the Ukrainian Police TOLERATED the violence against their own and responded patiently with non-lethal measures before they were forced to respond lethally after dozens of Berkut were murdered.

Disbanding the Berkut was an idiotic move added by the “opposition” to a pile others. Now the Ukraine has no special police to deal with Right Wing militias roaming around and bullying officials and cops.

The first police reports about the alleged firing on protesters said that the police were alarmed at sniper fire hitting the backs of the protesters in front of them.

It was at this point that the government considered deploying anti-terrorist units who alone had any chance of eliminating sniper squads hiding amongst the protesters and in their ranks.

The Opposition, of course, opposed this move.

As a consequence, police and protesters died.

In reality, it is leaders of the Opposition who should be tried by the ICC for crimes against humanity.

And at home, for sedition.

Another blunder of “the Opposition” when they claimed that because Yanukovych left Kiev he abandoned and de facto “resigned” his office.

This would be like a Republican Congress avoiding an impeachment process because Obama fled a mob in Washington and moved to New York. Once again,

"the Opposition" just invented their own “laws” that the country was supposed to be ruled by.

Since when was it required that a democratically elected President be physically residing in a country’s capital in order to be or remain a country’s President? (Or even have to be in the country?)

Russian Flag Raised After Gov’t Sites Seized in Ukraine’s Crimea

Dozens of armed men seized the regional government headquarters and parliament on Ukraine’s Crimea peninsula on Thursday and raised the Russian flag.

The door of the parliament was blockaded from inside by tables and chairs, according to a Reuters correspondent on the scene in Simferopol.

Interfax news agency quoted a witness as saying there were about 60 people inside and that they had many weapons. It said no one had been hurt when the buildings were seized early on Thursday.

The news that Viktor Yanukovyh has resurfaced in Russia seems very significant. Not only has he apparently been given sanctuary by the Russian authorities, but they have allowed a statement on his behalf to be read out on Russian TV and distributed by all Russia’s main news agencies, in which he officially declares himself still president of Ukraine and denounces the new government in Kiev as ‘extremist’ and the parliament as illegitimate.

Feb. 26 - Russian President Vladimir Putin puts Russian combat troops on high alert for war games near Ukraine, amid fears of Crimean separatism in the Russian-speaking east of the country. Mana Rabiee reports.

Well, it looks like Russia intends on fermenting a civil war in the Ukraine.
 
Or perhaps Russia will settle for the annexation of Crimea.

Fair being fair, Crimea has the right to secede.
 
Reuters is quoting Mr Yatsenyuk as saying that $37bn (£22bn) of credit received by Viktor Yanukovych’s government has disappeared.

PM Yatsenyuk has accused the government of former President Viktor Yanukovych of stripping state coffers bare, according to Reuters. He was quoted as saying that in the past three years “the sum of $70bn (£42bn) was paid out of Ukraine’s financial system into off-shore accounts”.

He added: “The state treasury has been robbed and is empty… $37bn dollars of credit received have disappeared in an unknown direction.”

If true, that’s some high level corruption

The armed men who seized the Crimean parliament and government in Simferopol were special forces from Sevastopol, Ukraine’s former security chief Yevhen Marchuk is quoted as saying by LigaBisnesInform news website.

I doubt that the Tatar population in Crimea would go for that…

Ukraine’s former President Viktor Yanukovych is to hold a news conference on Friday in Russian southern city Rostov-On-Don, reports in Russian media say.

This is an interesting remark. There are not a few Muslims in the Crimea. 12% or so, I think. One has to wonder whether they could relish the idea of being ruled by Russia as opposed to being governed by Ukraine. Chechyna, after all, is not terribly far from there.

A page or two back in this thread, there’s a story about yesterday’s demonstrations – basically, about 20,000 Tatars assembled in Simferopol (the Crimean regional capital) and demonstrated in favor of the new Ukrainian government and against any move toward Russia. (For background, the Tatars were deported to Central Asia by Stalin and only returned to their native territory in Crimea in the last couple years of the USSR and after Ukraine’s independence.) There’s also a significant minority of ethnic Ukrainians in Crimea as well. Pretty much everyone in Crimea speaks Russian, but allegiances aren’t always based on language and the population is more divided than some media stories make it seem.

Whatever happens, I pray for peace.

Routes leading from Ukraine’s southern regions to Crimea have been blocked by armed men with Russian flags, Ukraine’s TSN news programme reports. The men say they want Crimea to become part of Russia and also prevent “fascists” from entering the region.
