US Bishop Change: Portland in Oregon

But as you say he has been quite strong on life issues, if not on marriage/gay rights. Archbishop Sample will inherit an archdiocese that is populated with a number of perpetual Eucharistic Adoration chapels and a seminary that is bursting at the seams. That is a legacy that each of us should be grateful for.

B16 has established a bulwark of strong men up and down the West Coast in recent months, from LA to Seattle: Gomez in LA, Cordileone in San Francisco, Sample and Cary in Oregon, Sartain in Seattle. The new springtime is taking shape quite nicely IMO.

Jim nice to hear from a fellow Oregonian. I really admire Archbishop Vlazny’s courage and kind but firm adherence to our faith. Many do not know that Oregon was an abortion mecca before Roe and we are the first state to legalize euthanasia. Of course our past “Catholic” governor who was a big supporter of NARAL :eek: and the current gov who won’t use the death penalty but all for abortion rights…ugh! The dark side has a strong presence here. But Archbishop Vlazny always stood firm and spoke out, even if he couldn’t stop the evil. He is also such a humble and faithful servant. I was at an ordination at Mt Angel and afterward my friend and I were leaving when we ran into Archbishop Vlazny walking along with his bag. We asked if he didn’t have someone to help with the vestments and the driving and he said heavens no he was perfectly happy to take care of these tasks himself.

This is God’s country as to its beauty and natural resources but God has not been a focus of many of its residents. Someone told me because it was settled by people wanting to get away from civilization, we tended to get those who were not church oriented. Of course there is Mother Joseph and many Holy priests in our state’s history.

So Archbishop Sample has many challenges but as you said many wonderful assets in our priests and religious, the Catholic presence in healthcare and charity, Mt Angel and also OCP. I am looking forward to the installation in April!

Someone on the local Catholic radio station or EWTN radio said recently, that in the past, when the culture was not hostile to Christianity, a bishop needed to be a diplomat, among other things. Today, w/ the culture so hostile to Christianity, specifically Catholic, the church needs much more then a good diplomat. Not every personality, no matter how faithful, is cut out to take on our modern culture and confused Catholics.
I imagine some bishops feel beat up. I think Archbishop Vlazny looks tired. Portland Archdiocese was hit hard w/ clergy abuse & $$ lawsuits.

That’s a pretty good list. I would add Bishop Vann in Orange, CA also. Though, since he just left us here in Ft. Worth, I am a bit biased. 🙂

Archbishop Vlazny did a masterful job in negotiating through the lawsuits that sadly included MANY totally specious and fabricated claims. Interestingly my former hairdresser, a homosexual man, said he was SOLICITED by numerous attorneys because they apparently got the names of altar boys who had served under a priest who was charged in the sexual abuse scandal. He was disgusted and said he had never been approached or touched or molested by this or any other priest. But it was apparent that some less than ethical attorneys were more interested in dialing for dollars than seeing actual justice done.

Although unfortunately there were some claims that had merit, Archbishop Vlazney took the step of declaring bankruptcy which put both sides back into mediation and a settlement was reached. It was certainly time consuming and all of the money that could have helped other causes went to attorneys. So no wonder he’s tired! But I think he had the right combination of kindness for the actual victims and a strong position that protected the archdiocese.

We do have a strong and growing archdiocese and while we don’t have the huge numbers of some, I think that there is, as Archbishop Sample noted, plenty of room to evangelize.
I’m reallly looking forward to a vibrant and energetic new voice leading us forward

If you’re in Portland, go see Holy Rosary Church. It’s ALWAYS packed, even for daily mass. It’s run by very conservative Dominican priests and it’s simply flourishing. Now go look at other Catholic churches in Portland (who I won’t specifically name here). Low attendance, not many people volunteering to help, not many people who understand what it is to be Catholic. Those churches are run by “progressive” Catholics. I think people WANT traditional, especially the younger generation. I agree that if Bishop Sample changes too many things too quickly, people would start leaving but I don’t think he’ll do that. I think the Holy Spirit will guide him in his mission of bringing the churches of Oregon back into communion with the Catholic Church. If you know anything about the Church it’s that everything takes time and nothing is rushed.

I love Holy Rosary, it is a beautiful church and you always learn things from the sermons. I go at least once a week at noon, since I work nearby. It’s about the best church I have every been to.

I’m going to Holy Redeemer for early Mass, since I have to work that day. My home parish (Sunday Mass) is St Thomas Aquinas, but I make my rounds on the other days. 😛

I like Holy Redeemer. I used to attend Mass there regularly until I learned about Holy Rosary. Fr John does a good job over at Holy Redeemer. 👍

Oops…sorry…Holy Redeemer, Vancouver with Fr Mitchell. I forgot there are two in the area. 🙂

They are really close to us in Camas, but we prefer our home parish because they have the Latin OF Mass (ordinary prayers in Latin, Gregorian Chant, etc…) at 11:30am on Sundays.

lol, well that does make a difference. 😉 I’ve never been to Holy Redeemer in Vancouver. I might have to check it out.
 
The Diocese of Portland is truly being blessed by receiving Archbishop Sample. I am from the Diocese of Marquette. Archbishop Sample just completed the new Curriculum for 9th to 12th grade. You will hear him speak of his poor catechesis as he was growing up and how it has been poor over the last 40 or so years. I teach High School Faith Formation and teaching his Curriculum is challenging but very rewarding. The students seem to respond well. The teachers are in total control of how they are going to teach as long as they teach what is required. The Curriculum is also available on the Diocese of Marquette website that can be downloaded. It will take 4 years to teach and incorporates the CCC, Vatican II documents, the Adult Catechism, Youcat and more. He also hosts an event for young people and for the older kids. Both happen in opposite years. When you first meet him, you will see that he is a very humble but holy man of God. He will teach and preach the teachings of the Catholic Church and will not shy away. He does everything with love and is well thought out. Not all will agree with him or his methods and quite frankly, they don’t have to. Those who have an issue with the Catholic Church need to realize that maybe the issue is not the Church but themselves. Anyway, Portland is very blessed and we that belong to the Diocese of Marquette are very excited for you. We know the issues Portland is facing and you do need a Shepherd that will lead the flock of Christ! Constantly support him with prayers and take the time to meet him, even if it just to shake his hand or give him a hug. We too are gaining by him going to Portland. What he does, with your help, in Portland, helps the entire Body of Christ. God Bless the Diocese of Portland, the Diocese of Marquette and the Catholic Church.

THank you very much. I am passing off this information to the director of RE in our Parish. She might find some of the information on the website helpful.

We are really looking forward to welcoming him to Portland officially at the installation which I understand is in April. In the meantime I am checking the Cathedral website to see if he will be speaking or presiding at Masses before that time.

I am happy that Portland will have a new archbishop. I hope that he will institute more traditional celebration of the liturgy in this area. There are few places in Portland that are not of the happy, clappy variety. Holy Rosary, as others have mentioned, is a wonderful place. I used to be a member there. St. Stanislaus, the Polish parish, is also fairly conservative. We use the altar rail there, the priest prefers to distribute communion on the tongue (and he’s the only one that distributes communion) and the priest is available for confession before each mass and most of the day on first Friday. There are masses in English although I like the Polish Mass better because of the choir at that Mass.

There is also St Birgitta (EF and OF Mass every Sunday) and St Stephens (Solemn Latin Mass every Saturday at 7:30pm). I’m sure there are others. The first EF Mass I attended was at St Birgitta (before the Motu Proprio Summorum Pontificum), but I haven’t had a chance to attend St Stephens. They have a great Schola from what I understand.
 
We also have Latin Masses and Polish Masses in different parishes in the Diocese of Marquette. Plus several 24 hour adoration chapels and a retreat center that is phenomenal. Our Diocese is active in many areas of our faith. I believe Archbishop Sample built on all of these. Many of us from the Diocese of Marquette are praying for your Diocese. I wish there was a way how we could stay updated on how things are going for your Diocese. I expect resistance because many catholics are stuck in their ways and not God’s. I was one of them and we have them too. The thing is, do we truly have God first or are we worshipping other gods? My problem was I was relying on my own understanding. Understanding of man. Pride got in the way. Some things may be baby steps, others may not. You can’t feed babies meat but they need milk. Archbishop Sample will need people like all of you to support and help him.

Believe me he already has a friend in many of us who loved Archbishop Vlazny but respected his wish to retire. We are SO delighted to know Archbishop Sample is CATHOLIC…I am getting such a view of the secular world’s ideas with the retirement of our Holy Father. They keep talking about how “conservative” he is which is a euphamism for ORTHODOX. The American media cannot seem to separate the Church for political campaigns! I am hopeful that the appointment of Archbishop Sample will generate a renewed interest in the Church and living our faith.

We have a bi weekly paper called the Catholic Sentinal that I think you can access through the Archdiocese website (www.archpdx.org I think) and currently Archbishop Vlazny has a column as well as reports on his activities throughout the Archdiocese. That may be a way of keeping up with Archbishop Sample and how he is impacting the Church in the ‘wild west.’
