so what the article seems to be saying is that to be a good father you must also be a Masculine man. I’ve watched a lot of fathers be more like mothers and that’s not good for the children. Fathers need to be men, not just male. That means doing manly things. Woodworking, camping, working on cars, knowing what the right tools are, drinking whiskey every once in a while, taking your kids to fish, and treating your wife right. I tell people all the time I can teach you how to have a great marriage. as a man, act like one act like one around your wife does mean you have to be a troglodyte. It just means when the trash needs to go out you take it out if there’s a bug you squash it.
Oh dear. There are SO many variations on how people express their gender. Do you really believe that all the things you mentioned are pre-requisites for being male? What if you have no interest in camping or working on cars? What if you preferred being an artist and creating beautiful paintings? Preferences are preferences. Interests are interests. And certainly proclivities are just that. There is such a wide spectrum. And taking out the trash, in my opinion, is a chore that EVERYONE in the house does. Have you ever read the book ‘The Great Santini’? Manly things, and expectations, gone amok.

Well yes , the variety is wide. But even if a man is in the middle of creating a wonderful sculpture , if there is a bug....we yell- they squash it ! It is written.;) I do not remember exactly where but I read it !!:D yes ,yes. good for Philipl that he remembers the basics !:yup:

With all the talk about ‘manliness’, might I poke a little gentle fun at someone who seems much beloved here on CAF? Cardinal Burke. I must admit, he sometimes goes a bit over the top. Would you all define the good Cardinal as an example of manly-manliness? (Full disclosure: I have no knowledge of his ability - or proclivity - to step on bugs whilst wearing his silk slippers.) But surely with the lace and the VERY long train, along with all other accessories that a manly-man would wear, perhaps he is an inspiration to all whisky-drinking, car-fixing men!

There are a variety of ways to express manliness but there are some that seem to do it pretty well. outdoor activities do it better than most, and as we become more of a technological society the harder it becomes to express it. Outdoor activities are a good way to get away from technology and civilization.

I’m not sure which thin stereotype to address first.

If your whole concept of a manly man is from a book, then I guess youre right. I wrote nothing about being male, that is a product of birth. But a family needs a father that can act like a man. Not like a second mother. Not only do boys need it, so do little girls.

I’ll tell you what would be manly from fathers and husbands.

Make the effort to bring people together who are a mixture of married and single and not too many of the former. Get them to harness each others’ gifts in spotting the potential in each other. Get them to keep abreast of each other’s concrete needs as well as spiritual ones. Create lots of mutual intercession space, also intercession for good government.

Help me, a single man, to be a bit of a father to my neighbour.

That’s what would be manly from fathers and husbands.
