They you explain why they have the following organizations STILL receiving money from the CCHD:

New York City AIDS Housing Network = $30,000
Restaurant Opportunities Center of New York = $25,000 (pro-abort, pro-homosexual)
United Workers Association of Maryland = $50,000 (opposing any ban on same-sex marriage)
Michigan Organizing Project = $40,000 (promotion of homosexuality)
Michigan Interfaith Voice = $300,000 (homosexual activism)

And I could go on and on…
It’s all there in black and white - these groups support gay marriage, distribution of condoms, and pro-abortion activity.
The CCHD investigated the claims of the ALL and found most of them to not be accurate and defunded the group(s) where ALL was accuarate.
Don’t believe me - research it for yourself. Unless you are going to blindly put your head in the sand and believe a press release, and put that check in the plate.
I watched your linked video and many of the claims seemed tenuous at best and had a rather broad definition of “pro-homosexual activities.” My Ordinary trusts the CCHD and thus so do I.

My diocese has to close inner city churches and schools because of lack of money. But they send money to Washington for the CCHD, which then funds 3 local organizations.
Different issues. Parishes are supposed to be self-sustaining.
Why do we continue letting Washington Catholics choose what causes get promoted in my diocese? Don’t local Catholics know our priorities better?
No group is ever funded without the explicit approval of the diocesan bishop where the group does its work.

we can legitimately question the morality of organizations that use those gifts that we have donated in good faith we can therefore legitmately question tithing to the Church generally? There are many worthy organizations competing for our dollars.
The issue is not questioning where the money goes. Everyone has the right to ask such questions. However, reasonable and faithful Catholics can disagree over the merits of contributing to the CCHD.

If true then that indeed needs to be addressed. Not all of us trust the ALL’s accuracy in reporting.

The USCCB could not answer ALL’s findings on questionable groups…hmmm

Not every Catholic automatically trusts what the ALL has to say about this matter. They trust the USCCB to correct any mistakes that have occurred.

What motive would ALL have in giving the CCHD a black eye? They stated that they were not trying to give this Catholic organization a black eye, they were trying to help them to be more faithful to Catholic principles. And also why would any informed Catholic trust everything that comes from any Bishop? Some Bishops (key word here “some”) have been proven untrustworthy time and time again. It would be frankly irresponsible to ALWAYS trust EVERYTHING coming from ANY Bishop without proper discernment.

This statement is over the line. The US Bishops are not collecting " money to help the abortionists continue their work."
I agree with you here. But this is a hypothetical statement. I am pretty sure the poster did not mean that the Bishops had this in mind.

It seems simple to me. If one doesn’t agree with CCHD, then there are plenty of other ways to donate money:

St. Jude Children Hospital
Mary’s Meals
Catholic Charities
etc

So just donate to other charities and ignore the CCHD envelope. If CCHD donations drop significantly, the reasons why will be investigated and hopefully solved. That seems like the best course of action - vote on it with your money by not donating there.

i for one am always suspect of umbrella charity groups like United Way (they defunded the Boy Scouts in SF over their refusal to allow gay scout masters and since then I haven’t given them a dime). Umbrella groups are all too easily subverted by those with an agenda, an all too easy way to ‘hide’ certain groups that would not otherwise get any donations because they are illicit in nature.

So to avoid that, I donate directly to the groups I support. (I have donated to CAF directly, for example!)

God bless you.
I couldn’t agree with you more on this!!!👍 I have emailed both our Cardinal and our Pastor with information, and personally will not give to this. We (H and I) will give directly to groups that are known to be faithful to Catholic teaching…starting out with the basics…our local soup kitchen…and go from there. You are so right about the “umbrella” groups. I do not think that the USCCB has any knowlege of monies going to anti Catholic groups. I think they just maybe haven’t been fully informed. I think they need to clean CCHD’s house but to their defense, I am sure this is a very complicated and time consuming job. I also think that ALL has very good and noble intentions by calling attention to this matter. For some reason it just wasn’t received very well by USCCB.🤷

I think some people might be overestimating what the CCHD does. The CCHD does not directly choose who gets the money. A local diocese asks CCHD to fund a group that operates within their diocese. They rely on the local bishop and his staff to do most of the vetting.

And the money for CCHD is an entirely separate thing from any parish or school closings. CCHD gets its money from a specific “second collection” designated for that purpose. 25% of that money stays within that diocese while 75% gets passed on to CCHD to distribute to those groups that request funds.

So if you don’t want to support CCHD, no one is forcing you to give money in that collection. But supporting CCHD has nothing whatsoever to do with parish closings.

I don’t think that’s true. CCHD did respond to ALL’s first report by instituting more stringent guidelines, by immediately defunding a few groups that slipped past their radar, and by involving a moral theologian in their review process (a moral theologian who works at Mount St. Mary’s Seminary – one of the most orthodox seminaries in the country). So I think it’s unfair to say that it “wasn’t received very well.”

I believe you may be refering to last year’s campaign. Yes, they did in fact defund several groups that were judged to be questionable from last year to this, but they added different ones that were not faithful to Catholic teachings for this year’s campaign. ALL brought it to their attention and to be quite honest, I cannot call their response to them anything but lambasting them for having some kind of an *ideological *agenda. I guess I should clarify myself and state that this year’s communication was not well received. When the USCCB states that ALL has a “ideological agenda”, I guess I would call that not very well received.

Hey Moderator you have so many restrictions there that you are starting to sound like a modernist. Sometimes in telling the truth someone might be “offended”

How is asking posters to post charitably being restrictive?

Its not that but its a FACT that Vatican II has flaws and it is a FACT that there are bad priests out there so it should be ok to point it out so that the laity and clergy reading can help the Church recover from its weaknesses.

This forum is a good example of that, the CCHD is a corrupt and terrible organization to be labled the good name of Catholic. It needs to go, bottom line. Anything done to help take down this farce of a group I support.

The local bishop can veto a specific organization if it directly opposes Catholic teaching. But once an organization is funded once, he or his successor has to have a very strong reason to de-fund it - and then get bashed in the media.
They get some choice between this ACORN - type group, or that ACORN - like group. Organizations of prolifers or parochial school parents aren’t on the list of possible choices.
Catholics only have a certain amout of money to give overall. Money given to this second collection reduces the money given to other special collections, like for low income parochial schools. My diocese does subsidize inner city parishes. The money comes from the same pockets that get hit for CCHD.

They get some choice between this ACORN - type group, or that ACORN - like group.
You are correct - many of these groups operate under the category of community organizers, are truly political in nature and contra to church teaching.

A couple years ago one CCHD funded organization in Buffalo lobbied against Catholic Charities getting the contract to operate the WIC program. The CCHD wanted the local County government to get the contract! That CCHD lobbying organization is still getting CCHD funding - they will forever, as long as they don’t support abortion.
One poster said if you don’t want to give the CCHD money, then don’t give it. The problem is that CCHD demands not just the right to solicit money, they demand to pass the collection at Mass. When people see the collection basket coming, they trust that people in authority have discerned that this is endorsed by the Church as a high priority, with no problems. Most trust that CCHD money goes to Catholic organizations. It doesn’t.
If the CCHD weren’t already entrenched, CCHD would never be started for funding today with a collection at Mass, surpassing more urgent causes like the Catholic League, which fights anti-Catholic bigotry.
But CCHD has a built in bureaucracy in Washington which fights tooth and nail, with Catholic money, to perpetuate itself. At the local level the organizations are closely tied in with the political and media establishment. It is very, very difficult to cut any of these organizations; a bishop may be in the fight of his life.

And this is why I’m eternally grateful to my priest for NOT participating in this collection.

God bless our holy priests.

This statement confuses me. The bishops (who are the people of authority for the Catholic Church) have discerned and most have endorsed it (with some exceptions, as noted above). And for those bishops who don’t endorse it, no collection is taken in their diocese.

In my diocese, the bishop sends out a letter that is read before Mass at every parish the week before the CCHD collection to let people know it is coming, to tell people a bit about it, and to encourage people to give. I just assumed that most bishops operated that way. 🤷

And if the local bishop is not the authority on the matter, then who is?

I skimmed the article which is nothing more than the opinion of a blogger, so where is the “complete picture” you refer to? Thanks, but I believe the proof is incontrovertible and I’ll just do as my own bishop suggested…help the poor in our area for now. As to the other bishops NOT allowing this collection, here is last year’s list:

List of Bishops Not Holding CCHD Collection:

Bishop Joseph Adamec - Altoona-Johnstown, Pennsylvania
Bishop Robert J. Baker - Birmingham, Alabama
Bishop John O. Barres - Allentown, Pennsylvania
Bishop Lawrence Brandt - Greensburg, Pennsylvania
Bishop Fabian Bruskewitz - Lincoln, Nebraska
Bishop Victor Galeone - St. Augustine, Florida
Bishop Robert C. Morlino - Madison, Wisconsin
Bishop Kevin Rhoades (formerly) - Harrisburg, Pennsylvania
Bishop David Ricken – Green Bay, Wisconsin
Bishop Edward J. Slattery - Tulsa, Oklahoma

I would venture a guess that since the mailing of the ALL report more names might be added.
I don’t think this list is complete, or at least it might not represent the way things are fully. In my own diocese, the bishop allowed the collection, but also said people could alternatively contribute to the newly-formed diocesan charitable program, which alternative, in truth, he greatly encouraged over the CCHD. To my knowledge, neither of my parishes even had the collection for CCHD, and you had to out of your way to contribute to it.

Yes…this is last year’s list - sorry I couldn’t find a more current one. Good for your bishop and ours. The trend seems to be going in the direction of encouraging donations to local charities and I know the needy just in our own area has grown due to the economic downturn. Heard just this week that more and more are experiencing problems in even paying their heating bills.
