The following part of Bp. Blaire’s letter is simply untrue. And it’s untrue in multiple ways.

“The House proposal would cut SNAP by $40 billion and harm hungry children, poor families, vulnerable seniors and workers who are underemployed or unable to find employment.”
Perhaps Bishop Blaire has a problem in his diocese of the faithful contributing adequate amounts to food pantries, Catholic Charities, and St. Vincent de Paul?

Thank God there is a Democratically controlled Senate and President.

I would doubt it with every bone in my soul that God is happy that there is a Democratically controlled Senate and President. If you cannot give events deeper thought than that, well maybe you’d better not try. This president is completely and individually to blame for the continuation of abortion to include babies alive and able to thrive. As the lead choice of the Democratic party they unite with him in this grave sin. I would say more but tend to be impolite.forums.catholic-questions.org/images/icons/icon8.gif

I’d love to see cuts aimed specifically at waste in the food stamp program. But if it’s just an across-the-board cut of a certain $$ amount, how will they make sure that people who are cut off are people who SHOULD be cut off?
Are you under the impression that currently they allocate a portion of the funding to a category called “waste”? If it was so easy to get rid of govt waste, it would have been done a long time ago. Waste is inherent and endemic to govt. People are not good stewards of other peoples’ money.

It’s actually very easy - but where are all these poeple going to work when the government gets rid of them?

Just another example where the GOP continues to attack the neediest people in the country. Wanting to cut food stamps for people who are poor is a shameful vote and I’m glad the Bishops are speaking out about this. Thank God there is a Democratically controlled Senate and President.

“According to Bishop Blaire, how the House chooses to address hunger and nutrition programs has “profound moral consequences.” He added, “Struggling people are not seeking a life of government dependency, but rightfully deserve decent paying jobs to provide for them and their families. Even with evidence of a modest economic recovery, the economy still has not improved the standard of living for many people, especially for the poor and the working poor. More than four million people have been jobless for over six months, and that does not include the millions more who have simply lost hope.”

Now that others have corrected the errors that are rife in the article and letter, would you care to correct your original post, and correct the errors? Isn’t it a tenet of Christianity to hold to the truth?

Anybody read the article? It’s one bishop, Bishop Blaire, not The US bishops. He is bishop of Stockton, CA, not my bishop.
But he is a member of the magnesium and we should listen to his words carefully. A careful reading of his comments and the actual food stamp proposal indicates that he has not, perhaps, read the bill and is depending on news accounts to describe its effects. We should care for people in need-staring at the lowest level and moving to the govt only as a last resort.

The only problem is there is no actual cut to food stamps The US will continue to spend more every year on the program. The “cut” is actually a proposal to slow the increase in spending.
An example: The Democrat’s propose a 20% increase in spending in the food stamp program. The Republican’s counter w/ a 10% increase in the food program.
The Democrat’s scream “Republican’s want to cut half $ from the food stamp program!”
(10% is half of 20% )
The liberal press runs headlines accordingly. Truth is the only cut is in the proposed amount to increase.
This is called line-item budgeting.

That’s an old Washington trick.
If the news media actually informed people about this trickery then they wouldn’t be able to get away with it. Only Fox reports these facts.

As a Political Science major in college, and as a person who grew up in rural American and now lives in suburban Philadelphia…*** I strongly feel that it’s time for a “Catholic Political Party.” ***

The Republicans often do not care for the poor enough, nor show charity. However, the Democrats use charity to keep the poor downtrodden. Many (if not most) Catholics live in urban areas of America. Republicans are pro-Life (plus), Dems are pro-choice (bad). Republican leadership is mostly Protestant, Dems have fallen to the secular/atheist agenda. Nationally, the Republican Party often does not offer solutions for urban American, which forces some to vote Democratic. Then on the flip side, nationally, the Democratic Party as often lost touch with rural American.

It’s time for a “Catholic” party which is focused on Charity, Moral-Catholic Values, and the needs of different communities. Maybe we can call it the “Universal Party” to attract like minded, non-Catholics! 😃

We shouldn’t depend on either party of even the federal Govt to care for the poor and needy. Subsidiarity is the key.

Nice thought. One problem though:

Half of the Catholics in America are Liberals and Democrats. Half of the Catholics in America voted for our current Liar-In-Chief. Most of today’s Catholic politicians are Democrats. Even the clergy has many such people in its ranks.

How long would it take before your new party was infiltrated and subverted by such people.

As others have mentioned, we are not talking about a teaching of “The Bishops” here. We are talking about an opinion issued by Bishop Blaire. Sometimes I think that if 90% of the nation were receiving food stamps, some bishop would still oppose a reduction.

usccb.org/issues-and-action/human-life-and-dignity/agriculture-nutrition-rural-issues/upload/lettter-to-house-on-snap-nutrition-bill-2013-09-11.pdf

I heard earlier today that what the bill proposes is
    1. Making sure those on food stamps are eligible to receive them.
There is $856 million in fraud each year with food stamps.
    1. That those on food stamps have them for a time period.
    1. And that those without children, under 50, and who are able bodied on food stamps, get workfare training, or do community service.
The House proposal reduces the food stamp bill by 5% over 10 years.

Actually, it only INTENDS (hopes, might be more accurate) to reduce it from otherwise projected amounts by that much. It’s not a monetary cut at all, only a tightening up of procedures that have been waived.

The Dems propose a 1/2 of one percent “cut”, but it’s not a cut either. It’s just a notional adjustment to a massive increase that will happen anyway.

The democrats will continue to spend money until China and other countries no longer wish to loan it to us, and dare I say ask for repayment!!!

Either that or when the printing presses break down.

…time to doomsday prep

True.

I’m not a member of any party. Used to be a Democrat until I was “ousted” in effect and unofficially, when abortion became the #1 Dem cause and devotion.

When it comes to voting and support, I am an “oppositionist”, I guess. I oppose the evils promoted by the Dem party. Repub candidates are usually prolife and pro-marriage, while Dems are always pro-abortion and pro-homosexual “marriage”, so I’m not left with a lot of choices. The Repubs are not perfect, but I can vote Repub in good conscience, and do. I cannot vote Democrat in clear conscience any more.

There will not be a “Catholic Party”, because Catholics in this country don’t agree on even the most basic moral issues.

There was a real propagandizing effort going on by the OP poster.
He is a bishop and a chairman of a committee on social justice. There is no indication that his opinion is that of even the committee he directs, let alone the Bishops, and he never called Republicans immoral.

The Catholic Church has not been drafted as a wing of the Democratic party yet.

A lot of people mistakenly believe that if both parties were pro-life, Catholics would flock to the Democratic Party. It is not the case. There are a lot of valid philosophical differences with regards to the proper role of government, and both liberal and conservative Catholics make their cases based on the teaching of the Magisterium.

With regards to war, of course, both parties are pretty much the same. The Democrats are still okay with killing people, they just prefer to do it with a diminished military ability and drop bombs, use drones, etc., rather than risk American lives.
