Just another example where the GOP continues to attack the neediest people in the country. Wanting to cut food stamps for people who are poor is a shameful vote and I’m glad the Bishops are speaking out about this. Thank God there is a Democratically controlled Senate and President.

That is the tactical error the Republicans have made. The cuts should be the RESULT. But the effort should be described as cutting waste fraud and abuse. If the Republicans had said they want to pass a law that roots out waste fraud and abuse then people would applaud that. But when they just bluntly say they want to cut the spending they open themselves up to Democrat lies and slander.

Its a LOT worse to send OUR taxpayers money to fund abortions when the mexico city policy was whichever way it reinstates sending money (which is what Obama did almost immediately in 2009!). its a LOT worse when people are told to abort a baby that MAY have downs and then have TAXPAYERS pay for it.

Bishop Blaire claimed previously that the Ryan Plan cut food stamps when it actually increased the funding by 8% rather than the12% Obama wanted. Inflation at the time was supposed to be below 2%.

Then he supported Obama’s gun control plan before Obama even proposed it.

Now this. There are no cuts even in the rate of increase. What this proposal does is HOPEFULLY reduce PROJECTED expenditure increases by requiring able bodied adults with NO DEPENDENTS to work (20 hrs/week qualifies), be available for work, including community service, or in job training, in order to receive food stamps. Now, who can’t do that? This is in lieu of simply waiving those otherwise applicable requirements in 10% of the states that waive if the person is receiving any other kind of public assistance.

Hardly draconian.

The following part of Bp. Blaire’s letter is simply untrue. And it’s untrue in multiple ways.

“The House proposal would cut SNAP by $40 billion and harm hungry children, poor families, vulnerable seniors and workers who are underemployed or unable to find employment.”

Remember, the $40 billion is a HOPED FOR and THEORETICAL reduction affecting only ABLE BODIED persons with NO DEPENDENTS who do not wish to work at least 20 hours/week, be available for work or take job training.

I sometimes think Bp. Blaire is so convinced that the Dem party is the “Voice of God” that he reads a few Dem talking points, investigates nothing himself, then endorses the Dem position on USCCB letterhead.

It could be viewed as merely amusing if his letters misled nobody. But they probably do. And one has to wonder about the degree to which his partisan utterances have and do mislead Catholics into thinking they have to swallow Dem support of abortion and other evils in order to keep children from dying of starvation on the streets. A terrible disservice to the Church and to the faithful.

I agree with you.

Dems are not alone in being misleading. They claim there are 'cuts" that will cause “children to starve” when there are no such thing. Just complete lies.

But while Repubs’ deceit is less harmful, it’s still misleading. Some of them claim they’re cutting spending when they actually aren’t. This particular “cut” is simply a projected reduction in the otherwise projected rate of increase, effected by enforcing the work (or looking for work) requirements that 90% of the states impose anyway.

Nobody even knows if it will save a dime. Maybe it will, maybe it won’t. But Repubs assertions that they are “cutting” the food stamp budget, while possibly true in a sense, are not literally true.

But you’re right. The Dems (and Bp Blaire who repeats their claims on USCCB letterhead) then accuse the Repubs of taking food from the mouths of children when they’re not. Other than Bp Blaire, perhaps, the Dems don’t even believe that themselves.

But in falsely claiming to have effected “cuts”, the Repubs leave themselves open for the false and magnified Dem claims that they did.
