Yep, three hospitals, but none of them have been authorized by the Provincial government to purchase an MRI system. That is the way the Canadian systems works, a hospital has to get permission to offer services. Hospitals can’t be trusted, it seems, to make medical decisions such as that.
People go to Canada for cheaper perscriptions, not medical care in any great quantity. I know of quite a number of Canadians who come to Detroit for services, (heck they are advertised in Windsor), but none that go to Windsor.
What is really interesting is that one of the doctors in the office my wife used to go to in Windsor has an office in the Metro Detroit area. OHIP limits the amount a doctor may bill in any given year. Once the doctor reaches that limit, his\her choices are to either see patients for free, or to close up shop for the remaineder of the year.
Most doctors simply don’t take any more patients than they can bill for (hence the long wait to see doctors). In this particular doctors case, his simply has an office in the States, where he is not subject to OHIP.
Also, my in-laws neighbor is a nurse. She works in the States, in Ontario, she would make half of what she does in the US.
That is one of the ways Canada keeps the costs down. It mandates, via law, that a doctor may only accept payment from the government. It then limits the amount it will pay the doc, and also keeps the pay for other health care workers low.
My,my, I suggest that you do your research a little more thoroughly in your haste to discredit Canadian Heath Care.
McGuinty Announces New MRI For Windsor - February 20, 2004Working Together To Shorten Wait Times
Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty today announced a second MRI for the Windsor area to shorten waiting times and improve access to health care for local residents.
“The health of Ontarians is our province’s most precious resource. We share a responsibility to protect it from harm, and care for it in times of need,” said Premier McGuinty.
“Today’s announcement will strengthen health care by shortening wait times for vital MRI scans that improve the treatment and diagnosis of serious illnesses like cancer.”
The new MRI will be located at the Metropolitan campus of the Windsor Regional Hospital and also operated by the Hotel-Dieu Grace Hospital and the Windsor Regional Cancer Centre.
“With another MRI in Windsor, patients will be diagnosed and treated sooner,” said Health and Long-Term Care Minister George Smitherman. “This announcement supports an important priority that we ran on and that Ontarians voted for: healthier Ontarians in a healthier Ontario.”
The new MRI will provide service to all residents, including cancer patients. Over the past six years, the Windsor Regional Cancer Centre has experienced a 20 per cent growth in both new cancer cases and overall patient visits.
The Premier praised the efforts of the people of Windsor who are raising the funds to purchase the MRI machine. The government is providing the funding needed to operate the machine.
“Working together, we can deliver the results that Ontarians want, including shorter waiting times for important health care procedures.”
