Source? From all I’ve heard, it was proactively enacted to prevent neo-Nazism, not in response to anything at all. I’m open to correction, but I’d like to see a source. It certainly appears to be the case that the people in Germany now who are being prevented from homeschooling are Christians, rather than Nazis.

As for what is being taught in German public schools, well, that’s part of the problem with public schools in general, isn’t it? There is what is being taught by teachers, and also what is being taught by peers. I’m positive that the teachers are not teaching the values of the Nazis. But that doesn’t mean they aren’t being learnt by public school children in school.

However, although I am absolutely convinced that Germany’s ban on homeschooling is an immoral law, that doesn’t mean I think the family is really eligible for asylum.

That’s exactly my sentiment asylum only has so many spots and is reserved to those actually in danger of being murdered or killed and serious situations should be given asylum before home schooling. Being murdered or killed and needing to flee for safety outweighs home education. They aren’t in danger of being killed or murdered or living in a war torn country. It’s sad they have to deport, but I don’t consider not being allowed to home school when you can move to a neighboring country immediate danger or facing death.

no limits on asylees (present in the USA), there are limits on refugees (not in the USA)

I’ve met many who aren’t well adjusted and are kinda stupid, and these are typically from Christian families who teach creationism and fear of the outside world.

but, here in the US, its the right of the parents to teach nonsense to kids.
I don’t have much sympathy for either home schoolers or public education, since I’m the product of neither. the home schoolers I’ve met haven’t impressed me much, then again, I have higher standards than many. public education ranges from horrendous to very good, depending on where you are and what the local tax base is.

if homeschoolers want to teach creationism, or that the earth is flat, or illiteracy, that’s ok by me, its more amusing than tragic. after all, they’re not my kids.

if you don’t think homeschooled kids can’t find drugs, condoms or abortions you’re fooling yourself.

and every kid ought to know how to beat the snot out of the weaker.
It sounds to me like you don’t believe in creationism? How do you reconcile that with the fact you identify yourself as a Catholic?

easy. I’m Catholic and don’t believe in creationism.

But why are we applying different criteria to home-schooled children as public school children? Many public schools also educate poorly. Does this mean, if a public school child tests poorly, it is time for public schooling to end for them? Time to send them home. 😛

Does that not seem like a bit of a double standard?
When public schools are performing poorly, in many states at least, there are remediations available, vouchers to private and charter schools are one big example.

As opposed tho the stellar, well adjusted, brilliant students turned out by America’s public school system. The homeschool kids have no idea where to buy drugs, get free condoms and abortion or how to best the snot out of smaller kids to get their lunch money .They need tho be forced into public schools so they can be as well educated as their public school buddies
Believe me, if they have any interaction with children in general, in school or out, they can find out easily where to get drugs, abortions, condoms, etc.

No kidding! How many home schooled kids end up pregnant and having abortions?

Doesn’t anyone care that this family will probably lose their children if they are forced to return to Germany?
Honestly, no. That is the risk they are taking by violating the laws of their home nation. Go to another country in the EU that allows homeschooling, enroll kids in public schools, apply to immigrate to the US (instead of trying to get asylum) all of these are valid options that would solve the problem.

You would need to define what you mean by creationism. I am a Catholic, I believe in Theistic Evolution, the Big Bang, and an old Earth.

there’s a good article on this in a recent issue of First Things. might be online.
