This is the elephant in the room, that the world would go into shutdown due to a virus that has a global kill rate of over 5% atm.
There is research coming out that the kill rate would be much higher if we had not stayed home.
I bet the flu rate will be down for those in the Southern Hemisphere this winter as a result of all our new hygiene wokeness.

Your hypothesis will be severely tested over the next month or so.
If it is correct we wont see a huge increase, if it is not correct the virus will spiral totally out of control again and backhoes will be digging more mass graves.

I totally understand as well.
What is perceived as unfair , what is in fact unfair, loads and loads our patience…
It is and has been a test of all sorts.

Thank you for the explanations, YADA.
And I sincerely pray for the best for us all and peace . It will pass. Everything passes.:pray:t2:

Now here is data based on a few minutes ago.
(Please Note: This uploaded content is no longer available.)

No speculation. Just real data collected by CDC.
The table looks quite speculative to me.

For example, the numbers given for the Spanish Flu infected are 105,000,000. That would have been every man, woman and child in the United States at the time. As far as I am aware there was no mass testing of the Spanish Flu back then so where do the numbers come from - speculation?

For the COVID numbers though we are only including the people that have been tested. I would ask if the 2 million infected includes those who have previously had the virus and recovered or just those that test positive for the virus at the time of the test. Also the numbers of deaths appears to be those dying WITH the COVID flu (or even assumed) and not OF the COVID flu.

If so then the mortality rate of COVID would be largely exaggerated.

If we remember the initial talk was not that we wouldn’t get COVID, it was expected we would, but that we should stay indoors so that we each get the virus at a slower rate and not overwhelm the hospital system.

Nobody was ever expecting, nor expects that 5% to 6% of Americans will die from COVID.

If that was the case then there is no way the protests would have happened or been allowed to happen.

The numbers come from the CDC. take it up with them. Granted the population in 1918 was 105 million.

You are complaining about speculation but you want to apply your own speculation about the COVID-19 numbers. Why?

If you are going to complain, at least be informed. It is a virus. It is not a flu. If you don’t like the numbers, take it up with the CDC.

Bing grabs the numbers from the CDC every minute. Go to bing type ‘Corona Data’ and bam you get the data instantly. You even get the data for your state and the nearest city to you.

Well, it’s killed twice as many Americans as those who died in VietNam in just the last three months, so maybe it’s pretty bad.
It has killed the people more than the Korean War and Vietnam War combined.

Korean War 36,500
Vietnam War 58,209

Trump is making anyone attending his rallies to sign a coronavirus waver.
If they contract the virus at the rally, they cannot sue him.

If this virus and its transmission was not an issue, why would Trump be going down this path

I would just about guarantee that the Protests/Riots/Looting will not cause any increase in Covid-19 infections …
Why is Trump making anyone attending his rallies sign the waiver then? That is my question now.

Where do you get the idea that discussion and questioning is complaining?

That sounds quite defensive. If you don’t know how the stats you cited are calculated that is OK. If we don’t know then we have to speculate or find out.

I get my own data from government sources.

I live out of the United States. Our state has had 24 confirmed cases and has been basically that way for the last 2 months. There has only been 1 death of a ninety year old man who died WITH COVID and that was three months ago about 2 towns north of me.

I suspect we probably had 10’s of thousands of infections here but nobody was testing unless there was a serious medical emergency. That would skew the results significantly.

The fact that the United States quickly created dozens of field hospitals that they didn’t need, constructed 10’s of thousands of ventilators that they didn’t need, renovated and dispatched 2 largely idle hospital boats, directed medical staff to list COVID on death certificates in questionable circumstances and had hospitals half empty with medical staff laid off in preparation for a wave of COVID patients that ended up being way smaller strongly suggests they got the numbers wrong.

The half hearted attempts to chastise the protestors pretty much shows everyone that the authorities realise they got the numbers wrong. It appears that too much politics is driving, and has been driving the communications.

Can we really compare a virus that killed 70- 80 year aged people to war deaths of 19 year olds?

I was just discussing the limiting of the spread with a learned person who said that limiting the spread limits mutations.
A mutation can be either good or bad.

tic toc tic toc.

Yup, media hysteria pushed our idiot politicians to spend $3 TRILLION of our children’s money and temporarily devastate our national economy for a virus that has infected a little over one half of one percent of our population.
Bad ethics in that analysis. When someone dies of covid-19, it affect their family and friends. This disease will affect all of us.

If we are Catholics and believe in the sanctity of life we can.

Besides your facts are wrong

What facts are wrong. It is mostly older sick people who are dying of the virus often people in nursing homes. How can that compare with soldiers called, drafted by their goverment at 18 years of age into a war zone?

As I said, the Catholic principle of the sanctity of life.

Besides, citing that “war zone” undercuts your point. We expect more deaths in a war zone, not fewer.

It hits the old predominantly, @LeafByNiggle , do not minimize that as you just did here.

Scroll down the page to find this headline:
State Reports of Long-Term Care Facility Cases and Deaths Related to COVID-19
and have a good look at the table there. This is the best summary I’ve seen for long term care facilities cases and deaths across the US. If someone has a better one, please link it.

I’ll summarize: 40 states are reporting deaths and death rates for patients in long term care facilities (LTCFs). Those 40 states are reporting that these patients make up 45% of their total Covid-19 deaths. 26 states (out of 40) are reporting at least 50%. At least a few of the non-reporting states are known to have problems so to assume 45% holds for all 50 states is likely not going to be far off the mark.

As of today, we’re at 113k total deaths. 45% of those deaths yields about 51k deaths among patients in LTCFs. But only about 1.7% of our national population resides in those facilities. Or about 5.6m.

But many ignore the other side of that: the other 55% of deaths, about 62k deaths come out of a population of the rest of us. About 324m.

So for the rest of us, this is nothing more than a bad flu year. We locked down the healthy for this? When we should have been concentrating our resources on the LTCFs as that was where the hospital overloads were coming from.

We would have to have 150k deaths this year to equal the 1968 flu death toll per capita. We would have to have 160k deaths this year to equal the 1957 flu death toll per capita.

In neither year did we lock down the economy. The economy went down some both of those years, but nothing like what we did to ourselves this year. Flu vaccines were not widely used in either year because of their side effects.

We didn’t even lock down the economy in 1918. Some large gatherings were banned, but that was about it. Baseball and football kept right on going.

Everyone can argue any which way they want. But those are the numbers they’ll have to start with. Bad flu year for the rest of us.

I do not minimize it. Nor do I consider that fact to be an excuse for caring less about those deaths than if they were all high school students or babies. Do you know and love anyone who is old? I do. I know lots. My life is diminished when one of them dies unnecessarily.

Kind of blows up the whole abortion argument if you take this path, don’t you think?

Never thought I’d read this on a Catholic forum.
No actually it adds to the abortion issue. All life is sacred. The underborn is just beginning his/her life. The ninetten year year old soldier is just begining his independent and family life. The aged sick lives are at the end of their lives but no less sacred and I see that as fact.

To compare soldiers drafted into a war and then killed at a young age seems like a poor comparison, that’s all. There certainly got to be better comparisons.

Yes, you’ve made it clear that, in your view, some lives are worth more than others.
I never said that some lives are worth more. I said why compare drafted soldiers deaths to virus deaths, two very different deaths.
