US life span decreases for third year in a row

I don’t see an article attached here but I agree statistics do show a decline. The main factors affecting the numbers are drug addiction, the flu. The flu is breaking records the last few years in terms of number of deaths. Heart disease is also increasing; cancer going down. I agree stressful lifestyle is perhaps the most overlooked factor, which could be feeding the other causes, weakening people much more than any of us realize. As I understand it there are discrepancies between men and women and also the races - I think that is right (don’t have numbers); where you live in the US, even down to your neighborhood. (I saw an article about that - death rates go up and down by neighborhood.)

On a larger scale, I have no problem citing the ‘culture of death’ as playing a role. Is it me or my age or do people just plain seem unhappier 24/7 than, say, 20 years ago? By which I mean actually enjoying/loving being thankful for life as opposed to just pushing themselves through it, without seeming to really know or care why. I do notice this and wonder why there is so much unhappiness. Even what passes for amusement or camaraderie is often cruel, superficial, desperate. I realize this is pretty standard - vale of tears, all that - but it does seem to be getting worse, to me anyway.

JOG on, jog on, the footpath way,
And merrily hent the stile-a:
A merry heart goes all the day,
Your sad tires in a mile-a.

The starting point for calculating life expectancy is the age-specific death rates of the population members. … with a large number of data, one looks at the mortality rates actually experienced at each age, and applies smoothing (as by cubic splines).

In other words, the longer you live, the longer you’re likely to live, statistically?
Yes. Everybody has a life expectancy, even if you’re 100 years old. If you’re 100, it might only be to 101, but a 70 year old’s life expectancy is a lot less than that, and a 20 year old’s is less still.

Did you actually read the link you gave me. Look at the chart on page 79. It shows the US way down behind the other developed countries!
what you said was an outright lie, not even hyperbole.

The US is below the OECD average, they are not “the worst”

What developed countries are below them??

You also seem to be missing the point (or just ignoring it) which is that life expectancy in the US is terrible and continues to decline. Its irrelevant if they are worst second worst or whatever. You are focusing on the wrong thing.

How do they collect the data?

How are the deaths from abortion included in the data?

Are you completely ignorant of the definition of OECD?

Suggest you post less and read more.
So you are still ignoring the point. Do you agree that life expectancy in the US (the most powerful economic power and the country that spends more on healthcare than other developed countries) is bad and getting worse?? Get your head out of the sand and please answer the question. Its a simple yes or no.

To answer your question I do know the OECD. There are 34 countries which are members. The only countries below the US in terms of life expectancy are Czech Republic, Denmark, Hungary, Mexico, Poland, Slovak Republic, and Turkey. I wouldn’t think that is anything to boast about. All other OECD countries have higher life expectancy than the US.

By way of further information the USA is the only OECD country which does not have universal healthcare for its citizens!

You are ignoring the blatant lie in your post, that the US has the “worst” life expectancy of any developed country. OECD countries are by definition the list of developed countries. The US is below the average, but far from the worst.

Why do you exaggerate or outright lie to make a stronger point? The real facts are sufficient to have a meaningful discussion

In short, you are completely unable to answer my question!

You aren’t making sense, I showed your statement to be either a lie or gross error, it doesn’t even qualify as hyperbole.
Period.

This is at least the third time you have called me a liar. Nasty personal attacks are forbidden in these forums. Either you apologise or I will report you to the moderator. I will give you this last chance.

I repeat my earlier post: “The only countries below the US in terms of life expectancy are Czech Republic, Denmark, Hungary, Mexico, Poland, Slovak Republic, and Turkey.”
Are you suggesting that is something the US should be proud of??

Great, you are admitting your original mistake. Now you are giving an honest assessment, the US is thus not the worst of all developed countries.

The mods won’t punish me for showing your post was in error, I even provided a link to an official OECD source.

You should have just owned up to your error from the beginning.

You are doing it again in a sarcastic manner. No apology then. I will report you to the moderator. You don’t get it. You don’t get “punished” for pointing out something wrong. You are not permitted to call anyone a liar in these forums. That’s what you get sanctioned for.
