I’m not sure what has caused the investigation but I do realize that the work of nuns has changed dramatically in the last thirty years.

"The Vatican is quietly conducting two sweeping investigations of American nuns, a development that has startled and dismayed nuns who fear they are the targets of a doctrinal inquisition.

Nuns were the often-unsung workers who helped build the Roman Catholic Church in this country, planting schools and hospitals and keeping parishes humming. But for the last three decades, their numbers have been declining — to 60,000 today from 180,000 in 1965.

While some nuns say they are grateful that the Vatican is finally paying attention to their dwindling communities, many fear that the real motivation is to reel in American nuns who have reinterpreted their calling for the modern world.

In the last four decades since the reforms of the Second Vatican Council, many American nuns stopped wearing religious habits, left convents to live independently and went into new lines of work: academia and other professions, social and political advocacy and grass-roots organizations that serve the poor or promote spirituality. A few nuns have also been active in organizations that advocate changes in the church like ordaining women and married men as priests. …

The investigation was ordered by Cardinal Franc Rodé, head of the Vatican office that deals with religious orders. In a speech in Massachusetts last year, Cardinal Rodé offered barbed criticism of some American nuns “who have opted for ways that take them outside” the church."

It’s long overdue IMHO, but you won’t get this from this piece, which seems to imply the big bad male-dominated heirarchy of “the Vatican” is doing this for no good reason. Imagine the horror of inquiring whether a nun actually goes to Mass.

Unfortunately you don’t have to look too far among Catholic women religious to find absolute heterodoxy. A woman religious at a parish I used to attend frequently made reference to God as “she” and gave talks about new-age spirituality.

I once knew a a nun who would tell us teenage girls that Jesus often had girlfriends and so he understood us having a boyfriend and relationships. I have also heard of nuns who will taxi teenage girls to the abortion mills.

Yes this investigation is very much needed. I also know many, many nuns who do follow church teaching and the refreshing thing about these nuns is that they are the younger nuns.👍 A change is in the air and it is coming from our youth they are tired of being lied to.

I think it’s important that nuns wear habits and live in convents, as they used to. If that’s the direction that this visitation points to, then I welcome it.

The nuns I know are kind, but way too liberal…IMHO this investigation is long overdue.

in my extremely uneducated opinion, the convents went with the habits… not speaking in all cases mind you, but generally. At least that’s been the experience in my neck of the woods. I also know that the habit does not make the nun, but in my view the loss of outward identity did not further their cause or membership…:o

I think identifying garb may be OK but a habit is strictly out of the 15th century. Nuns don’t need that and it would not be a benefit, as far as I can see. I favor some type of identifier because the nuns in my neighborhood are here studying at a theological college and are often taken for lay students. Even worse, no lay female wants to be taken for a nun. Neither do nuns need convents, except for the retired religious, in my opinion. With the small numbers, of nuns convents are just wasteful and many now which were built earlier have serious design flaws and violate the fire codes. That’s the status of my parish’s convent…

In my experience, I have not heard really anything from nuns which does not follow Catholic teaching. A very few favor ordination of women.

My friend the missionary nun wears no habit and is quite conservative. She is a cancer survivor and before her third placement overseas to work with women in a developing nation she gave me a gift – a memorial book on the election of Barack Obama.

With all this, I consider nuns to be in self-managed religious orders, responsible to the pope. Basically they get to decide what they want to wear and what their ministry will involve. Its their business.

My favourite nun of all time was Sister Jackie. She worked in my highschool and she did wear a brown habit but was probably a little to liberal for people here. She set up meetings with other religious leaders, so we would learn to respect other faiths and see our common threads. Yet when I think of near ideal christians I have met she is on the list. She was one of the most loving, and kind women in the world. Always had time for any student at anytime and this was even after years of working with teenagers in a catholic highschool. 😃 If there was ever one religous that showed the love of christ active in their life, it was her, you could just see it, very similar to John Paul II. You knew that love was there and it was attractive and it gave you the idea that maybe the religous life was not a bad idea. Im sort of said now, they will probably box her up somewhere behind some marble prison wall because she will not meet with this administrations current standards of purity, denied the ability to love the people God calls her to love. I think, I will send her a thank you card, and contact a few of my old freinds to do the same. This hunt will probably hurt her a lot and I want her to know that she was a good sister.

If a nun, any nun, is living a good holy life, and is fully in line with the Magisterium, then they have nothing to fear.

Now - if they are promoting lesbian life style, not going to Mass, shipping girls to abortions, worshiping some strange “earth mother” weirdness, then they should be very concerned. And I hope the Vatican can find some way to totally distance the Church from them in any and every way possible.

WOW! What a sweeping condemnantion of a investiagtion that has not even started!

Lucky them! I would love to be scutinized by the Vatican! It would be such a blessing.

The non-cloistered nuns in this part of the country (Iowa) are stark raving radicals. They are frequently in the news championing for illegal immigrants or being arrested at US military bases in protest of our Government and especially when those evil Republicans were running the show. On the upside, I appears their median age is about 70. There are several mother houses for these orders here and I know a few traditional sisters who still wear the full habit. They must go through daily hell and ridicule from many of their sisters for not conforming to the “new thing”.

A Franciscan retreat center near hear offers a full plethora of new age, non-Christian nonsense including Solstice services, labyrinths, and wiccanish things.

A chaplain for the Sinsinawa Dominicans frequently opines on how the Church needs to embrace the culture and of course he vehemently disagrees with the Catholic Church on her stand on an all male priesthood. I’m sure they would fire him if didn’t toe the dissenting line.

Keep in mind the Vatican is looking into theological heresy, not “movement conservative” heresy.

I bleive that one of the things they are looking into is speeches given supporting Female Ordination. IIRC the Orders belingto one of two umbrella groups-one of which is very “progressive” and the other which is very “Orthodox.”

If you talk to women who left religous life you will find many have becuase of what they failed to find in their orders, that is Catholicism. Many have been infiltrated with nuns in position that shape Catholic education and the misplaced politcal use of many social ministries.

The story is old news and the NYT seems to be using the story to continue to promote their misplaced agenda to discredit the Church.
**Vatican conducting ‘doctrinal investigation’ of US nuns’ leadership group **

April 16, 2009

The Vatican has launched a “doctrinal investigation” of the Leadership Conference of Women Religious (LCWR), the umbrella group that represents most of the women’s religious orders in the United States. The National Catholic Reporter, which made public the plans for the Vatican inquiry, indicates that the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (CDF) has expressed concerns for several years about the LCWR’s attitudes toward Church teachings on issues such as homosexuality, the necessity of Christ’s Church for salvation, and the impossibility of ordaining women.
In a February 20 letter to LCWR leaders, announcing plans for the inquiry, Cardinal William Levada, the prefect of the CDF, said that the Vatican’s concerns had been renewed by “both the tenor and the doctrinal content of various addresses” given at LCWR meetings.
The Vatican’s probe into the doctrinal orthodoxy of the LCWR-- which will be conducted under the auspieces of the CDF-- follows soon the February announcement of an apostolic visitation to assess the overall health of women’s religious orders in the United States. That inquiry has been organized by the Congregation for Religious.
