The US President this morning made an alarming call for an end to Catholic education in Northern Ireland in spite of the fact that Archbishop Gerhard Müller has just told Scots that Catholic education was 'a critical component of the Church.’

“If towns remain divided—if Catholics have their schools and buildings and Protestants have theirs, if we can’t see ourselves in one another and fear or resentment are allowed to harden—that too encourages division and discourages cooperation,” President Barack Obama said today while visiting NI for the G8 summit.

Archbishop Gerhard Müller, prefect of the Congregation of the Doctrine of the Faith, told an audience in Scotland on Saturday that Catholic education provided a rare place where ‘intellectual training, moral discipline and religious commitment would come together.’

Of course he doesn’t like Catholic schools. Why should we expect him to? This isn’t really news anymore.

With no more elections to win, I can’t wait for Obama to come out in opposition to Catholic schools in the U.S. also.

Did anyone notice that the same statement opposes Protestant schools?

Yes, but AFAIK there weren’t any prominent Protestant leaders that came out for Protestant education *the day before *the President made his comments.

I’ve about had it with this poor, afflicted country. I am seriously considering packing up my things, saving up, and moving to Russia. Let the American public reap what they’ve sewn, in complete and utter idiocy.

Ah, Christians getting educated together - the absolute worst idea since said Christians stopped tearing each other to bits…What’s next? “Undermining” Catholic marriage by suggesting that they intermarry?

Well, he also went after the Lutherans in the Hosanna Tabor case in the U.S. He doesn’t like the idea of any religion being active in the public arena. “keep your religion to yourself” is what Obama is all about, because he wants only his favored paganism to be active in the public square.

Obama compared separate faith schools to racial segregation in America. That is an outrageous comparison.

A study funded and commissioned by the Church of England and led by University of York professor David Jesson found that secondary faith schools were better at building community cohesion than non faith schools:

If you think this study was biased because it was commissioned and funded by the Church of England, consider that the study analyzed Ofsted inspection data, and you can look at the study for yourself:

churchofengland.org/media/1204726/strong%20schools%20for%20strong%20communities%20-%20cofe%20report%20final.pdf

There are over 7000 faith schools in England:

England does not have the sectarianism that Northern Ireland does. So how can faith schools be blamed for the divisions in Northern Ireland?

OH NO I don’t know about RUSSIA!!! Uh-uh!!!

I had a friend who visited Moscow some years back (let’s say, guessing about 12 years ago). She, her sister and mother were not allowed to LEAVE. They were held there for three weeks until the American Embassy intervened. They had no idea why, either!

I’d suggest the south of France. 😃

Brocky doesn’t understand that knowing the truth behind who you are is more important than “togetherness”. You can’t bond to a someone who isn’t really there. So we, Protestants and Catholics, can’t really stand together unless we know what we both are independent of each other.

Another alarming call to smash the Catholic Church - Mr. Obama’s stumbling block to his diabolical plans to fundamentally change the USA. Also, its a “twofer” because he is able to dis America overseas to all the “big shots” who like that sort of thing. Ain’t he something? forums.catholic-questions.org/images/smilies/wink.gif

Did he ever express such sentiments of his rambling nonsense before he was re-elected?
.
I don’t know if he did directly, but he imposed the HHS Mandate on Catholic schools before the election. They will either comply against conscience or be fined. If they’re fined, undoubtedly a number of them will have to close.

Heh, well. France isn’t doing much better than America these days, in terms of Catholic health. I’ll keep that in mind about Russia, though, much obliged.

Duly alarmed; now about the “smashing” part: is that applicable to the state of affairs before or after the troubles?

But what does the POTUS have to do with Ulster? What authority does he have there? Absolutely nothing a all.

He has plenty of troubles right here in his own country, enough to not meddle with other countries.

Obviously. But with his history, nobody’s going to look at it that way.
So right, except about the ‘nobody’ part.

For as far back as I can remember, I’ve generally had no problem with sitting presidents doing the routine things that presidents do and making the obligatory remarks in support of peace, unity etc.

It’s actually kind of comical how in the current state of affairs, every presidential breath becomes a subject of controversy. Somewhere is the dusty recesses of my mind, I seem to remember learning the obligation to respect the office of the president regardless of who occupies that seat.
