This is so commonplace now to make sure we know which sports person is in a SSM relationship or just gay. Same for Holywood people, like we really want or need to know this. Wonder though how they would have treated one of these women if they’d made the sign of the cross or mentioned casually they approve of traditional marriage! Guess they’d be ridiculed like Tim Tebow, and we’d all be told how unsportsmanlike like they are and have their personal life sensationalized especially if they slipped up.

As a matter of a fact, there was a player who made the sign of the cross when she came in as a substitute. I think it was an American player. The Latin players often do this but no Latin teams were among the last 4 this time and it was in the last 2 rounds where I saw this.

I’d say Italian, Irish and Polish players often do this as well. I think our Clint Dempsey on the men’s team acknowledges his faith. Something to watch for.

Seeing a player make the sign of the cross in sports is still, I believe somewhat common.

Maybe nothing should have been said about Wambach, I seemed to have heard about it after the game but did not know it happened at the time and did watch the game.

We use to have a player on the men’s team, Brian McBride, originally from Illinois or those parts of the US. I’m almost positive that he would regularly use the sign of the cross.
McBride generally favored low-key celebrations after goals, kissing his ring for wife Dina and making the sign of the cross. …

One of the best players our country has ever produced for soccer, at least top 10. I do follow the sport.

Why would a divorced couple do that? They are divorced. I don’t see the big deal. Muchado about nothing. Remember Brandy Chastain. …I think that was her name…who took off her jersey years ago after the women’s team won? Yeah that was controversy. …some people have nothing better to do with their time.

This type of argument is a complete red herring. When these types of arguments are taken to their conclusion, the end result is the type of absurd “man and dog” comments that Rick Santorum used to thoroughly embarrass and discredit himself with.

Frankly, there is a great deal of legitimate evil in the world: murder, rape, genital mutilation, human trafficking, robbery, violence, etc. By comparison, a same-sex couple expressing their love for each other is not even a blip. Frankly, when I saw it on TV, my natural instinct was to be happy for them during that triumphant sporting moment. If your natural instinct was to be offended, that’s certainly your right. Marital equality under the law is a constitutional right. There is, however, no constitutional right not to be offended.

Sotomayor’s comments are probably even further out than the so-called polygamy example.

This, not really applying it to you; yet, seems to be the standard view of those for same-sex marriage. They want to say “polygamy” is a red herring. I even saw a gay rights activist on TV say he would not stand up for polygamous marriages. Hence, we are talking about marriage equality all the same.

In that, born or made that way by environment, I can understand that an individual with same-sex attraction might be different than the person who chooses multiple spouses which could be seen as a luxury or a way to get more SS. I’m not positive.

And as for your comment on Rick Santorum, one of the Supreme Court justices themselves, Sotomayor brought up some sort of comparison herself similar to what Santorum said. I guess, it’s easier to use Santorum as an example. I guess Sotomayor embarrassed herself as well.
 
You know what I honestly don’t care if some are lesbians I have friends that are also. I am happy they won the game and I watched with my family.

Celebrating a lesbian relationship is no better or worse than celebrating living in sin with a person of the opposite sex; people who have conceived through IVF; people advocating ABC…

In all cases: love the sinner and appreciate that they also have gifts from God that bring joy to others’ lives (like being good footballers, for example) and hate the sin.

👍 Like football - it’s really so simple, you don’t need teams of pundits to explain it!

Um, I never called anyone (especially a fellow Catholic) “stupid.” That’s some powerful deflection right there. I’m also not the one who’s horrified that there are lesbians in the world or that they dare show themselves once in awhile.

There is only one logical way to understand what you posted and that is you wanted to stick it to those Catholics that disagree with you.

“Stick it”? Stick what? I simply noted that if people are horrified that lesbians exist and don’t resign themselves to living under rocks, they’re probably even more horrified to learn that she grew up Catholic and attended Catholic schools. Frankly if this fact gets under people’s skins (as I assume it will), that’s their problem and not mine.

The school Wambach attended is near me and it’s an excellent Catholic high school. The fact that another poster has already assumed that Wambach is a married lesbian because the school she attended failed to properly catechize her says quite a bit about 1) the ignorance here regarding homosexuality, and 2) the poor assumptions here about the reasons one might understand but reject the CCC’s teachings on homosexuality.

As long as she doesn’t refer to herself as a practicing Catholic, I won’t be horrified.
