The board of the second-largest membership organisation of US theologians has issued a statement regarding the Vatican’s sharp criticism of a prominent member in its ranks, expressing its “deep gratitude” for her work and “urgently” calling for bishops and theologians to better communicate, reports NCR Online.http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/cathnews/RSS/~4/Mfad7W0Ww2c

Why are the theologians trying to do the bishops jobs for them?

My favorite comment about theologians came from Fr. Benedict Groeschel during a talk he gave about the three theological virtues of faith, hope and love (1 Corinthians 13:13). According to Fr. Groeschel, “they are not called the three theological virtues because theologians necessarily have them…” :rotfl:

who are these theologians to demand the Bishops of anything? I think they misunderstand what it means for the clergy to serve us.

All this comes from the CDF’s criticism of Sr. Margaret Farley’s book ‘Just Love’.

ncronline.org/news/vatican/vatican-criticizes-us-theologians-book-sexual-ethics
“Among the many errors and ambiguities in this book are its positions on masturbation, homosexual acts, homosexual unions, the indissolubility of marriage and the problem of divorce and remarriage,” the congregation’s five-page “Notification” said.

In those areas, it said, the author’s position “contradicts” or “is opposed to” or “does not conform to” church teaching.
I guess you have to have more ‘dialogue’ when you can’t accept the truth. 🤷

Consider the source. (NPR, who just last week, 6/29, “celebrated” the whatever anniversary of the “womenpriests” ordinations.)

I must say, though, I was surprised at an ironic twist in the article I’m referring to, if I may digress just a second from this thread. I was expecting comments lauding/applauding these women. To my surprise, there were some liberals who criticized the women for striving after the same vestiges of authority and garb that so many radical feminists reject. The criticism was that these women were signing on to the clerical structure at all, which I found an interesting response.

I love it when the group of “experts” decide that they want to “meet” to bully the leaders of our Church. Laughable situation.

What is this abnormal fetishistic obsession with “dialogue” that some in the Church have? Dialogue dialogue dialogue. It’s never dialogue. It’s, “Let me distract you and connive long enough and make you look bad enough to the press to get my way.”

Dialog is their replacement for obedience. Epic fail.

“Diologue” always reminds me of the episcopal church…or as they call it friendly listening?
i’ve forgotten now. But basically my take on “diologue” is to push someones liberal agenda till the others finally back down or become complacent.

Sorry to any episcopalian that might be lurking on here👍

I just came across a great article by Archbishop DiNoia the other day:

Theological Method and the Magisterium of the Church

I think the second paragraph is relevant to this discussion:

Much of the recent discussion has been preoccupied with the problem of theological dissent regarding the Church’s teaching on sexual morality. Here I will have very little to say about public dissent as such—except to note at the outset that the generalized tension between the Magisterium and theologians typical of recent decades is both unprecedented and anomalous. The normal situation is that Catholic theologians acknowledge the authority of the Magisterium for their work. It is a mistake to allow the condition of public dissent to frame or dominate any account of the relationship between theology and the Magisterium.

Amen to that. I think we ought to refuse to allow the debate to continue to be framed as “theologians vs. bishops”. They all ought to be on the same side and theologians ought to know their place.

It’s only a matter of time, though, before this historical anomaly becomes a footnote in the history of theology. Those of that generation are hitting the retirement age in waves.

And in the wake of that generation’s retirement, thousands and thousands of the younger folk consider the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass as a holiday (Christmas and maybe Easter) option because of the trickle-down effects of not only the 'battle" mentioned in this thread, but also from other previous theological battles such as the one over the book Quest for the Living God: Mapping Frontiers in Theology of God by Elizabeth A. Johnson C.S.J.

The biggest problem with theologians today is that they do not recognize the way in which their exploratory and challenging works will be used to sow confusion and thus they become complicit in that disaster.

There IS a place for challenging paradigms and reinterpreting old ways of seeing Tradition. But that place is in high level academia, not in the public square. That such an organization defends the author of this book when the context is clearly a text meant as an early level instructional tool is deplorable. Theologians need to relearn their purpose in the church.

Are these Catholic theologians?
I would have thought “no”, but they ARE!

From their website (I am loathe to give a link)
The College Theology Society is a professional association of college and university professors. Founded in 1953 as a Roman Catholic organization of lay and religious teachers of undergraduate theology, the CTS today…
The thread title should read "Far left lay Catholics support fellow leftist, world is astounded"

These increasingly seem to be elitists who have been lead to believe that they are more enlightened and up-to-date than those old fuddy-duddy Bishops. They alone, via their intellectual prowess, possess today’s state-of-the-art truth. Pope Benedict XVI has suggested that the Church will become somewhat smaller but more fervent. This seems to be occurring in our midst. Amen.

World should not be astounded because the movement to soften and then change certain Catholic doctrines has been going on for years. Granted it is difficult to recognize the 'language of change" but it is there in the younger folk.

That was meant to be ironic. 😃
