I’m sorry to hear this is causing you such distress. It is certainly understandable as it is a very distressing thing.

And perhaps I am naïvely optimistic. I still have hope that the truth can come out and that changes can be made. I still have hope that most bishops will do the right thing in the end.

But even if my hope is unfounded and nothing changes, I will never leave Jesus on account of Judas. It is quite unfortunate that Judases still exist among the hierarchy.

I didn’t say I was leaving Jesus, just for the record. I think it’s my faith in Christ that is at work here. Alive and well.

Right. I am sorry if my post gave the impression that I thought you were considering leaving Jesus. That was not my intent. I was just speaking for myself at that point.

This is a power problem first
If this isn’t solved now generations to come will be left answering for…

A individual bishop saying “I didn’t know” is ridiculous in an environment where “nobody knew”. Asking faithful to believe that is asking to much !!

Even if some were proven guilty of neglect or by-standing, the answer that is need is how sociologically they managed to omit as a group and live with it - and that is were the analyses of the power structure comes in. How all agents involved managed to coerce and omit each other into inaction. And addressing power relations, the problem of that specific group power dynamic goes beyond one single problem or issue. And might just be the main factor paralyzing the church at all levels. It seems the only thing they were “united” on&around was a sort of status quo no one could address.

And that is the result of a mixture of “clericalism” with “careerism” with “court society”, that pope Francis has been addressing.

I thought this was an interesting way to look at this story:

I think the central point is that it would be good for the Church and good for McCarrick’s own soul if he were to simply come clean. He also makes the point that other bishops like Farrell (to stay on the topic of the OP) will inevitably be looked at with suspicion regardless as to whether he actually knew or not. The only way to help would be to hear from McCarrick’s own mouth that Farrell did not know as well as how and why he kept it secret from him.

I admit, I’m praying for such a thing to happen. While I don’t expect people in Hollywood or in politics to admit to anything when they are accused of such things, I would hope that some glimmer of faith would prompt a bishop like McCarrick to just be honest for the good of the Church and his own soul.

Cardinal Farrell was our Bishop for several years. He did a wonderful job. I will give him the benefit of the doubt until other evidence comes to light.

Trust me. McCarrick WAS reported. To many people. From the early 1990s on.
Reported to whom?
As KMG pointed out, this man’s actions were well known, even the Vatican was informed. From an article by Ralph Martin of EWTN;
What has been so disturbing to so many people is the fact that there had been numerous warnings to various church officials that he was a homosexual predator, harassing many seminarians, priests, and young boys, for many years, but nothing had ever been done about it, and he was continually promoted. Even after a delegation of priests and lay people went to Rome to warn the Vatican about the situation, he was promoted. Even after a leading Dominican priest wrote a letter to Cardinal O’Malley, nothing was done. Even after lawsuits accusing him of homosexual sexual harassment in two of his previous dioceses had been settled with financial awards, he was still promoted. And not only that, he became a key advisor to Pope Francis and offered advice on whom to appoint as bishops in the United States!

The only way to help would be to hear from McCarrick’s own mouth that Farrell did not know as well as how and why he kept it secret from him.
Why would I believe McCarrick? He is a liar. His whole life was a lie. People like that are more than happy to take all the heat to save their co-conspirators. Why wouldn’t he protect the people he groomed to do the same thing? That is his true legacy.

And that is what is so truly awful about this man. He seriously weakened an already weak Church.

The sodomite clerics, from Priests to Cardinals, need to be expelled from their posts. No money to the Bishops till then.
