A few days ago I went to confession and confessed many serious mortal sins. The confession lasted over thirty minutes. Instead of the normal absolution the priest only said " I absolve you of all the sins of your life in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit" I don’t know whether this was valid as he said “all the sins of your life”.I also forgot to confess several mortal sins which I only remember now. I can’t quite remember but he may have even said " every one of the sins of your life" Please help

I’m not sure that this fits into the moral theology section but I desperately need a reply. A few days ago I went to confession and confessed many serious mortal sins. Sounds like its been a while since you last confessed.
Your priest absolved you of all sins up to the point you walked out of that confessional.
My priest advice when I did a few decades long confession, but thought a few old ones should be mentioned next confession a couple of weeks later was:

“He had already absolved me of every one of those old sins, so put it in the past.” I was undergoing a time of attempting to make amends for my old heathen life.

Priests on this forum might offer you more advice or comfort.
Forgiveness doesnt mean the punishment for those sins is wiped.
The Vatican has indulgences to help with that. This year there is one for the 100th Anniversary of Our Lady of Fatima.

He has the power to absolve. He said “I absolve you”. Done.

Are you scrupulous? And, as to the many mortal sins, it sounds like you either have over-estimated the seriousness of your sins, or you need serious repentance. Mortal sins take some deliberation and are not all that easy to commit.

My last confession had only been a few days ago.I had being confessing more than once a month for about a year but I just realized that there were mortal sins which I had never confessed. Was it a valid absolution?:confused:

I’m just worried over whether the absolution that the priest said was a valid one. Sorry if I appear restless but this has really been bothering me. I thought that the priest has to say only I absolve you of your sins not “of all the sins of your life”

YES!! The priest said I absolve you!

But can the priest say “of all the sins of your life” and it still be a valid confession?

Of your life up to that point. It doesnt give you pre sin absolvement for future sins.

John, I had literally decades of sinning under my belt to confess. There was no way I could remember or list each one. I also had no idea what would be mortal or venial etc. I told him of one I did have good knowledge of, we discussed it. It kind of stood for all I could , or could not remember.

After my first confession , I started wondering what I was , or had done to cause others to be sinning. And got a bit fixated on trying to get an art piece back from a museum I had made, showing nakedness.

My priest assured me it had all been forgiven, and I was not going to be responsible for others sins.

Your priest has absolved you of every sin up until you walked out of the confessional. Trust him.

And perhaps look up what scruples means , and have a chat with him about it.

I guess if you were a serial killer, then it would be the right thing to do to let the police know where you buried bodies. Etc.

So "I absolve you of all the sins of your life in the name of the Father , the Son and the Holy Spirit " is a valid absolution even if I confessed only days before?

:)I thank you all for your patience and your answers. May God bless all of you

So is “I absolve you OF ALL THE SINS OF YOUR LIFE in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit” a valid absolution?

Thank you. 👍. Sorry for being repetitive but I get quite anxious in matters like this 🙂

Evidently.

You should speak to your regular confessor about this, in person, in the hope that he can help you to eventually overcome matters of anxiety related to confession.

I remark that, typically, consulting a forum would not be helpful in such a situation; the number of priests here is very very few…and we wouldn’t, normally, try to resolve that sort of issue remotely and above all not in a public forum.

I deal with anxious persons on a daily basis as a moderator on a cancer forum. It is easily seen by those who do not suffer from it. Now, I am neither competent spiritual director nor medical professional - but you really should speak to both your Priest as well as your doctor over these concerns. Anxiety seems to be getting the better of you and God wants you to live in peace - especially after absolution.

You should be at peace. I’m not an expert but according to this EWTN article just ‘I absolve you’ should be sufficient.
The form is the words of absolution. A priest has a moral obligation to say the entire form “I absolve you from your sins, in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” However, as to what is truly essential in this, it has been commonly taught that only “I absolve you” constitutes the essential form, as this states what is taking place

Interesting. I’ve never had a priest not say this.

Forgotten mortal sins -when one is repentant but just forgets a mortal sin it is forgiven with the rest -but one is to confess it in the next confession for you have realized it was forgotten.
