WanderAimlessly:
*]Will the ACLU defend them

PF
Shame on you for this defamatory attack on the ACLU.

The ACLU does not defend criminals guilty of property damage. They save their money for defending EFFECTIVE evildoers!

Naaah! It isn’t a hate crime. You can only commit a hate crime against Jews, Moslems, Homosexuals and non-whites.

Catholics aren’t a protected class. It appears you can commit any premeditated crime of hate you want against Catholics and it could never be considered a hate crime. It is painfully obvious you can bash and trash all things Catholic.

Just watch…They’ll get off with some kind of slap of the wrist.

Do you have any evidence for this? You do realise do you not that there are non-white Catholics?

Statistics on hate crime from 2001 are available at findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m0RFV/is_2001_Annual/ai_n7639643
you can look at them if you prefer facts to venting spleen.

Regarding this case see waff.com/Global/story.asp?S=3931933&nav=0hBE

The four have been charged with first degree criminal mischief, considered to be a Class C felony…Alabama law says crimes motivated by a victim’s race, religion, national origin, ethnicity or mental disability is defined as a hate crime…

Alabama law states it is the right of every person, regardless of religion to be secure and protected from threats of reasonable fear, intimidation, harassment and physical harm caused by activities or groups and individuals.

Since the four have been charged with a class C felony, if convicted, Alabama law states their sentence shall not be less than two years…The Morgan County District Attorney’s office will present this case to a grand jury later this month. It will be up to the grand jury if the charges will be upgraded or changed in any way.

Give them some hefty fines for the damage they did then lock them up and throw away the key. :yup:

A slap on the wrist and maybe a little community service. That’s all they’ll get.

I’d say just watch and see, but this one will fade from view so fast we’ll never know the outcome. That is, unless some good local decided to follow the case and report it here…

What does that have to do with anti-Catholicism? Do you think someone who hates Catholics because he/she believes them to be idol worshippers distinguishes according to skin colour? You might do well to read up on some Catholic history in America.

btw, ‘venting spleen’ is a bit over the top.

Apart from the hate-crime aspect, there were material damages. So the persons could be charged with some form of vandalism. There could also be civil charges for restitution or repair.

There could be criminal trespass charges.

The individuals could also be required to research the origin of the accusations they have made.

The police have already released one of the people involved without charge. I guess no conspiracy laws exist in the South. When I lived in Charleston, SC, I took some heat for being a Catholic, but this is over the line. I really hope that the “good 'ole boys” don’t look the other way on this one. All FIVE should be charged with a hate crime.

I was responding to a post that said
You can only commit a hate crime against Jews, Moslems, Homosexuals and non-whites.
by pointing out that an anti-black and an anti-Catholic hate crime might be identical in the case of black Carholics. The original poster seemed to think that black and Catholic were distinct categories. Most of the worlds population of Catholics, of course is non-white.

This kind of news both angers and grieves me. Why do these creatures do such sacreligious things? Is it to get attention? to make themselves feel important? I shall pray for these poor things; but, I must admit and confess one thing: it will be quite difficult for me to do so…knowing what they have done. 😦

Wow… makes me wonder why? Such an act would take a lot of “courage” for teens - and think they wouldn’t get caught? I’m sure the Lord is happy with them destroying a place of worship. Would this be considered a hate-crime? Just thinking if it was Muslim or Jewish, it would be all over the news.
You’re right about that! I never heard a word about this until now. May God help these troubled people.

I live 20 minutes from this Church. The local station interviewed Wagner.

She mentioned the number of times that everyone bowed, saying they were bowing to the altar, the holy cross, etc and instead they should have been “Praising God”.

Also, many people from different denominations have called the Father and let him know that the Church is in their prayers.

I would say that there is a lot of upset people in the area (Catholics and NonCatholics) and everyone feels that this was indeed a hate crime and should be charges as so.

That’s just the feeling that I am getting just watching the local news.

Wow, delivered a message from God with his common law wife. And he “just broker a table.” Yeah, don’t you hate when people get in a fuss over *just *breaking a 500 lb object.

This is considered the bible belt and the protestants here spend more time trying to convert us than they do worshipping . It’s really sad.

I doubt that is true.

And if one wishes to pick one person who commits a crime and claim he is representative of the faith he professes, that game can be played by those opposed to the Catholic faith as well. In fact, it is done all the time.

That is what is sad.

Btw…EWTN is in the south. It attempts to convert Protestants every day. I’ve learned a lot from Marcus Grodi 's The Journey Home . It is a great show.

Group? He went and wrecked a church because he had a vision of wrecking a church pop into his head. Most people would seek psychiatric help, not a sledgehammer.

Hangers on and common law wife notwithstanding, I think this guy what I call a “denomination of one.” He’s out to lunch. A few cards short of a deck. Bats in the belfry. Lights on, but nobody’s home.

And yes, some of the Protestants go to great lengths to try to evangelize us. That’s why they’re called evangelicals. They think they’re doing us a great service of love. You need to oppose their errors, but be as understanding about it as you can. At least they’re not sitting in their churches in the smug knowledge that when they go to Heaven they won’t have you to deal with! Anybody willing to go out of their way to get the rest of us to Heaven can’t be all bad! 😃

The culprits were not Southerners. The female is from Connecticut and the male from New Hampshire. They moved south eight months ago because the male had wife problems.
